We have the conversation but it typically ends with the teams making the games they want to make, followed by they should sign XGSP deals to fill the void or acquire.

Yep… which is why Xbox needs someone like Ubisoft who wants to make those style of games :joy: (sorry - I am just repeating myself now).

We already went into this above RE Market share. Third party content will come when Xbox market share grows/recovers.

PS has no first party ā€˜Japanese’ content either.

Gran Turismo is as western as it comes despite being a Japanese developer.

Team Asobi makes some platform/party games, but I wouldn’t really consider it Japanese orientated.

I would argue Tango Gameworks (a Xbox studio) has put out more Japanese content then either of those.

It’s really interesting to look back in time, last gen people were saying Xbox needs to have more studios and make big single player story driven linear and/or open world games. They started addressing exactly that with the acquisitions in 2018:

  • Ninja Theory: 3rd person, cinematic, story-driven game

  • Playground: on top of FH, they’re making a 3rd person, open-world action RPG

  • Compulsion: Leaked info making a 3rd person, story-driven action adventure game

  • Initiative: First person, cinematic, story-driven action/shooter

  • Undead Labs: now this is a tricky one, they don’t fit exactly that but there’s potential there and specualtion that they’re gonna make a focused story single-player experience with SOD3, it’s arguable that SOD was a SP experience in essence but the problem was just the quality. Remains to be seen.

2019 acquisitions, this is where MS started targeting RPGs:

  • Obsidian: single player, first person, story driven RPGs
  • InXile: almsot exactly like Obsidian
  • DoubleFine: a studio that makes very different story single player games, bit it’s almost hard to categorize

2020:

  • Bethesda: Mostly single player, predominantly first person, action/shooters and RPGs.

2021:

  • Activision Blizzard: no significant single player story-driven presence really

It’s interesting. It seems there was a pahse 1 where MS focaued on getting studios/games to compete exactly with Playstation’s 1st party approach, but with phases 2&3 they went to a differentiation strategy with RPGs and FPS, which historically, those games were always associated with Xbox. That might be intentional, or might just be what’s available for the IP value and, the right price, and team/leadership.

RIP Sea of Thieves

I hope there will be some crossover with One Piece. The art style might make it look better than that JRPG game :joy:

Sea of Thieves x One Piece is only a matter of time IMO

Yeah, also launch some special editions of Series S with One Piece art.

Also, c’mon MS, do Series S Japanese Flag edition :joy:

What they should do with Series S eventually is put on on design lab lol

I wish it was an epic singleplayer adventure, I’d be all over that. More MP bs? Nah, thanks.

Like Black Flag, but then with its own mechanics, story, character etc.

Would have been a day one for sure.

Yeah, it would have been one of my rare Day 1 purchases.

Interesting. PS Direct had PS5 in stock for a while. Well to be clearer, it’s the bundle with Horizon FW. I don’t know if they have a lot more in stock or not many people gone for it or even error prevents them. I don’t know. One thing for certain, it’s pretty scummy to force people to buy the bundle, especially when it’s hard and very demanding. I know retail does them but this is from official guys. Anyway, curious how the sale would be for this month.

Bundle is a way to prop up the game sales numbers. I think Horizon Forgotten West did not sell well in retail, so they went after bundles.

Yeah, i would have preferred some kind of single player spiritual successor to Black Flag over this. But I’ll take what I can get at this point

Confirmed! :grinning:

Oh I just realized these are the normal monthly PS+ games, not the new PS+

Bruh it’s so confusing I swear

Do they announce PS+ Extra separately?

Considering that Sony got a bunch of Activision games in their service, there was some deal between ABK and Sony.

As someone completely indifferent to PS at this point, its an absolute mess to me
