I know what you mean about changing characters, DC has had some very weird things, Marvel as well. Not a fan of it at all, nobody asked for it either.

For a guy who doesnt know much about baseball and never played a baseball game how hard is it to get in to an MLB game? Is it hard to learn the mechanics?

Not really difficult if you want to play the game as basically as possible which is just pitching, hitting, running and fielding. You can easily learn as you play as the game explains a lot

My best advice is play the road to the show mode because it’s an easy way to pickup and play the game, and learn mechanics. Also there are interesting RPG elements in that mode.

You don’t exactly stumble upon a big ass dragon (that you can see from a far) and if you are teleported in a cave in a higher level region (that finding the grace to get out of there is fairly easy) you will probably lose some runes (which again is not the end of the world) but at the same time you can also obtain some precious consumables/gear if you decide to explore/check the area instead of getting out of there immediately. You are always rewarded with something cool if you are curious enough in ER.
The level of mystery and uncertainty that the game has in it’s world is what actually makes the exploring interesting, engaging and fun. Our gamer brains nowadays are too used in the handholding that the vast majority of the AAA games had for the last 10-15 years that even the most simple level of freedom and player agency paralyzes us, another big example of this is immersive sims and how a lot of people don’t understand how to engage/experiment with the various mechanics that they provide because a tutorial didn’t tell them that they can get in this office in Prey via a little window or a ventilation shaft.

Super Mega Baseball is also an option if ya want a more arcadey baseball experience. Also on Game Pass (and it’s legit amazingly fun to play).
