After the initial euphoria from the suddenly consolidation positive brigade, I imagine they’ll be fairly underwhelmed by this.
Rumors said EA, but never mind that, a few weeks after MS pick up ABK, this single studio with their single IP joining for half the value of Zenimax is a fart.
Worse still, no longer can they pretend to be the organic growth industry good guys - and now it’s unlikely another big acquisition will take place for them.
Honestly, with this, I think SE, Capcom, Kadokawa etc are all firmly off the table for Sony
I think Sony believes this is going to do Minecraft numbers. It’s a similar purchase, but who knows if Destiny can bring that much profit in compare to Minecraft.
it simply doesn’t. Minecraft is bigger than everything including everything’s mom as well. Sony isn’t THAT delusional. Destiny is faaaaar below GTA V, which is still 50 million copies or so below Minecraft.
In all seriousness now, This is a really weird buy, for a few more billions Capcom would be right there in their hands, this feels like they truly don’t want to sell.
I’m not saying Microsoft wasn’t interested or anything, I’m just saying why Bungie might have gone with Sony, and how both parties in this case benefit heavily. MS didn’t need Bungie compared to Sony. In some sense, Bungie probably felt a need for Sony, for everything it has outside gaming that can aid them in the shared ambition to get beyond gaming. And of course Sony felt a need for a strong live service representation under their first party so they agreed to go the long way here.
