I like how you quote all these parts separately, I don’t know how to do this exactly like that. But let’s go.
It’s not an Xbox-specific thing though. Sony and Nintendo have done this many times (and fairly recently too). Arkane games are always revealed through CGI, I guess it’s just the way they like to do it. Gameplay is usually shown not too far after. In fact, I bet it was Arkane’s idea to reveal it with CGI.
Yeah for Sony it differs. The reveal for HFW was not exactly gameplay, nor was it CGI. Judging by gameplay reveal it was in-game. But then ther was God of Was that only had a logo reveal trailer. But it does seem that more often than not they have gameplay. Nintendo usually reveals with in-game material, but I could definitely be misremembering here.
It’s true that Arkane always goes for CGI first, but the only difference here is that the game is coming in a year from reveal whereas Deathloop for example had it’s gameplay reveal a year after the cinematic trailer and the game has to release still. If that summer release is going to happen I would expect a gameplay look sometime this year.
Like you said, unconfirmed rumors. We don’t know what was actually happening behind the scenes.
Yep! It became a little something of a he say she/he said thing. The only official thing we have is by Xbox Wire. We should be getting something soon, now we need to wait and see what kind of soon it is.
Because what they showed was actually good. They showed in-game footage of the environment likely representative of the actual game, which showed noticeable improvement. This improvement was further shown through the cinematic, which also gave more insight into the narrative. No enemies shown up close, sure, but why is it needed? No one will care when the game releases, besides fanboys with their stupid graphics nitpicking. Then of course, the multiplayer trailer showed lots of in-game gameplay, again which showed an improvement from the last showing. They needed to give a look at multiplayer after all these years, and they did exactly that. I get that you don’t care for multiplayer, but just because they didn’t do a campaign overview doesn’t mean they are afraid of showing the game or anything.
Well , my gripe with this was that it said in-engine and in the past (on RE, GAF) this was usually seen as “not guaranteed it will look like this. Don’t get your hopes up until we see in-game material.” Now I don’t doubt it will look like this in-game because I would say it doesn’t look impossibly good, it’s like you said showing a noticeable improvement, absolutely, for both flyby part and Chief cinematic/cutscene. Richard from DF thought it was a little concerning that it wasn’t shown off the XSX and also the in-engine part, but with Phil saying what he said recently I’ll trust it.
I would have loved to see some parts where we see enemies and everything from up close, just to see the improved visuals, textures, details more. Remember how Craig was born, this time they could have shown what a huge difference actual good lighting and a year can do. Basically I just would have liked a few more parts and I hope it’s still coming. I mean it’s been years since a new Halo, they’ve worked their ass off on this and I bet there is brand new stuff to show off too. The game has been content finished since last year, so are they still working on improving the visuals now? Halo reveals always have had campaign footage, 4 had awesome looking footage, 5 was good too. Last year wasn’t a succes and we all know why, so a second gameplay bit wouldn’t have been a bad thing. Let’s just wait and see what they plan to show before launch. When all is said and done I just want a bad ass fantastic Halo game man.
As for MP. Oh I care for it, I will absolutely play it. But for me Halo has always been a campaign first, MP second thing.
I don’t think they should do a deep dive for every single game. For a couple games, fine, but not all. Kills pacing. What’s better, instead, is to do a 3-ish minute gameplay trailer. Then perhaps they can do an overview in an extended showcase, or give the game it’s own thing. What would also be beneficial would be to have a second main show, preferably early in the year. That way they have plenty of time to give everything the spotlight it deserves.
Ok you’re right about that. We’re gonna get to a point with Xbox now that they have so many games to reveal by XGS and on top of that non XGS games that they can’t have deep dives for them all. So next year there will be Starfield getting a deep dive, that’s guaranteed. But if Avowed and Fable are there too a trailer is better, true.
Plus the need for deep dives at E3 would be less important if they adopt a Direct style thing, which maybe they’ve already begun with SoT.
Because CGI can be easily outsourced, having no impact on development. Making a gameplay trailer/overview is MUCH more complicated. Especially with how rough game development can be, and with the added nuisance of COVID.
This makes sense, I had not thought of that, the outsourcing thing. Good thing that it seems we’re going back to normal more and more now in terms of covid, should mean many of these things will improve from here on out.
