XboxEra Community Hangout |OT3| Setting Low Expectations

@PhantomFox

I like how you quote all these parts separately, I don’t know how to do this exactly like that. But let’s go.

It’s not an Xbox-specific thing though. Sony and Nintendo have done this many times (and fairly recently too). Arkane games are always revealed through CGI, I guess it’s just the way they like to do it. Gameplay is usually shown not too far after. In fact, I bet it was Arkane’s idea to reveal it with CGI.

Yeah for Sony it differs. The reveal for HFW was not exactly gameplay, nor was it CGI. Judging by gameplay reveal it was in-game. But then ther was God of Was that only had a logo reveal trailer. But it does seem that more often than not they have gameplay. Nintendo usually reveals with in-game material, but I could definitely be misremembering here.

It’s true that Arkane always goes for CGI first, but the only difference here is that the game is coming in a year from reveal whereas Deathloop for example had it’s gameplay reveal a year after the cinematic trailer and the game has to release still. If that summer release is going to happen I would expect a gameplay look sometime this year.

Like you said, unconfirmed rumors. We don’t know what was actually happening behind the scenes.

Yep! It became a little something of a he say she/he said thing. The only official thing we have is by Xbox Wire. We should be getting something soon, now we need to wait and see what kind of soon it is. :stuck_out_tongue:

Because what they showed was actually good. They showed in-game footage of the environment likely representative of the actual game, which showed noticeable improvement. This improvement was further shown through the cinematic, which also gave more insight into the narrative. No enemies shown up close, sure, but why is it needed? No one will care when the game releases, besides fanboys with their stupid graphics nitpicking. Then of course, the multiplayer trailer showed lots of in-game gameplay, again which showed an improvement from the last showing. They needed to give a look at multiplayer after all these years, and they did exactly that. I get that you don’t care for multiplayer, but just because they didn’t do a campaign overview doesn’t mean they are afraid of showing the game or anything.

Well , my gripe with this was that it said in-engine and in the past (on RE, GAF) this was usually seen as “not guaranteed it will look like this. Don’t get your hopes up until we see in-game material.” Now I don’t doubt it will look like this in-game because I would say it doesn’t look impossibly good, it’s like you said showing a noticeable improvement, absolutely, for both flyby part and Chief cinematic/cutscene. Richard from DF thought it was a little concerning that it wasn’t shown off the XSX and also the in-engine part, but with Phil saying what he said recently I’ll trust it.

I would have loved to see some parts where we see enemies and everything from up close, just to see the improved visuals, textures, details more. Remember how Craig was born, this time they could have shown what a huge difference actual good lighting and a year can do. Basically I just would have liked a few more parts and I hope it’s still coming. I mean it’s been years since a new Halo, they’ve worked their ass off on this and I bet there is brand new stuff to show off too. The game has been content finished since last year, so are they still working on improving the visuals now? Halo reveals always have had campaign footage, 4 had awesome looking footage, 5 was good too. Last year wasn’t a succes and we all know why, so a second gameplay bit wouldn’t have been a bad thing. Let’s just wait and see what they plan to show before launch. When all is said and done I just want a bad ass fantastic Halo game man.

As for MP. Oh I care for it, I will absolutely play it. But for me Halo has always been a campaign first, MP second thing.

I don’t think they should do a deep dive for every single game. For a couple games, fine, but not all. Kills pacing. What’s better, instead, is to do a 3-ish minute gameplay trailer. Then perhaps they can do an overview in an extended showcase, or give the game it’s own thing. What would also be beneficial would be to have a second main show, preferably early in the year. That way they have plenty of time to give everything the spotlight it deserves.

Ok you’re right about that. We’re gonna get to a point with Xbox now that they have so many games to reveal by XGS and on top of that non XGS games that they can’t have deep dives for them all. So next year there will be Starfield getting a deep dive, that’s guaranteed. But if Avowed and Fable are there too a trailer is better, true.

Plus the need for deep dives at E3 would be less important if they adopt a Direct style thing, which maybe they’ve already begun with SoT.

Because CGI can be easily outsourced, having no impact on development. Making a gameplay trailer/overview is MUCH more complicated. Especially with how rough game development can be, and with the added nuisance of COVID.

This makes sense, I had not thought of that, the outsourcing thing. Good thing that it seems we’re going back to normal more and more now in terms of covid, should mean many of these things will improve from here on out.

Yep, I know. But in the past those were games that didn’t have a set release date yet. Deathloop had its gameplay shown a year after the cinematic reveal, but for Redfall the game will be out in a year. It’s kinda unique for Arkane to have a release date announced right at first announcement of new game.

If you highlight a certain portion of a post, there will be an option to quote that specific part.

The difference is that most of Xbox’s games were quite far away due to the timing of things. It’s incredibly hard to show gameplay for a game that’s years away because it’s not going to be representative of the final product. At all. Xbox didn’t have much to show that was close so they chose to reveal their upcoming pipeline through CGI. Hellblade II and Forza Motorsport are good exceptions, though. They were quite far away but they were able to show impressive in-engine trailers. Of course, we don’t know how close the final product will be. As we get closer to the absolute first-party barrage, I suspect they will stop announcing games that are quite far away through CGI.

Redfall’s a bit of an odd one. I think we’ll see gameplay pretty soon. I also expect to see it this year. I don’t think they would announce a summer release date if they were not confident about hitting it.

I hope to see more on it soon as well. Avowed is looking extremely promising.

The fly-by was most definitely stuff actually in the game, contrary to the initial reveal. I have no doubts whatsoever that it’s the case. Weird that they said in-engine, but I do not believe that it is a need for concern.

We have seen the improvements they’ve done to the weapons such as textures, through the multiplayer trailer. There are quite a few comparison videos out there and it’s quite a big difference. Floors and stuff in the multiplayer trailer had better textures too. I’m sure they have quite a bit more to show, too. There are still more Inside Infinites planned so I expect to see more screenshots. Perhaps they will show improved enemy models later down the line. Either way, I personally do not expect many will actually pay attention to the enemy models once the game releases. I certainly won’t.

Pretty much, yeah. For example, they can give Starfield a good chunk with Todd doing his thing. Then have an Avowed trailer showing the game off, and touch upon the details a little later. Basically what we’ve seen them already do this E3 with the extended showcase and seperate videos for Halo and Sea of Thieves afterwards.

We’ve seen a lot of Xbox people tweet about how they’re going back to the office and stuff, so things are looking good.

Honest question: is the Cuphead DLC “dead”? It feels like such a long time since I last heard about it, it was a no-show again at e3.

Don’t know but what I remember hearing is the way their content workflow works is very labor intensive. All the artwork is hand drawn. Every single frame of animation was hand drawn and inked by an artist on paper. The original game started development in 2010, aimed for a 2014 release but didn’t release until 2017.

Oh I know so damn well what you mean with a dog getting nervous. My Staffy notices incredibly easy and fast when I am cranky or when things aren’t going well and she’s very sensitive to it too. Basically it can he as small as a sigh when I’m gaming and I die or some stupid shit happens. She can be asleep and wake up because of the sigh and she seems to take it personal, doesn’t like it at all and looks at me like “oh boy, what did I do wrong?”

That’s why I do my very best to never go too crazy with throwing insults at the screen during gaming because hoo boy, is this dog sensitive to it. This breed is known for being very sensitive too.

Bless their souls.

I think it’s probably warped into a sequel by now.

Yeah My Joanie gets very nervous whenever I get irked playing games and raise my tone lol. Probably some remnants from before I adopted her so I wasnt gonna make her more nervous due to Psychonauts lol.

I know I should be patient, it’s just so hard when this game is pretty incredible and I’m still holding out hope for some adjustments on their approach to difficulty and accessing game content.

Yeah, I have my TV TV TV memes ready to go.

Another random question: have they announced the upcoming month’s GWG, PS+, or Nintendo NES/SNES lineups yet?

Wake up to people using UK sales of Scarlett Nexus to Slander Game Pass and Say xbox fans dont buy games.

*recycle the statement above for every game

Literally the split for physical sales in the UK is always 8-2 or 7-3 Playstation and its somehow news every big game release.

As a UK Xbox user, I haven’t purchased a physical copy since like 2016… all digital.

Yeah… I only buy my PS/Nintendo games physical so I can sell it when I’m done. For my main gaming on Xbox and PC I’ve been digital since a looong time. PS fans really are backwards striving conservatives lol. Wonder if they still buy CD’s too?

By the way, where in the Meat Circus were you struggling? I had some annoyances with the first part where you have to make sure the kid doesn’t get hurt too much , but all in all it wasn’t too bad. Where I had problems was near the end with Raz’s “father”

Yeah, on average PS/Nintendo gamers are more physical oriented than Xbox/PC gamers by a long margin, I mean, MS would prefer to not release physical editions at all and for many of their own small projects they don’t even bother or only release a limited time print.
