Closed consoles at these prices have no future imo

They need to start embracing open/PC approach

If Xbox’s answer to needing to increase revenue is releasing games on other platforms, is Sony’s answer to increase prices?

I wonder which people would rather have?

I think they should add another hundred dollars on that price tag, they deserve it!

Agreed at this rate getting a NextGen that matches a 4090 or more will be over $1000 and that will be DOA. I’m wondering if Microsoft will even do a console they might just do a handheld and leave it at that.
I think at this point consoles might have to become built into other expensive electronics like TV or require payment plans.

Xbox already has a payment plan in place, they just need to expand it to more stores their own included. Tvs are already 1k plus for entry level tvs, add in the console parts and those prices would double or more.

When it comes to gaming without a console, streaming will always be the better option for tvs imo.

I know the payment plan but like you said it needs to be expanded which I doubt they’re interested in doing outside the United States perhaps if they could partner with the phone carriers. The TV thing to me is just that a lot of TVs have enough power to play some games natively and I do think TV adoption is a faster way to get pricing down. I don’t know about cloud, there’s always this idea that it will never be fast enough perhaps an amalgamation of both for a middle ground might work. Also, I think if Tvs incorporate native gaming maybe something new could emerge. They’d certainly need to build tvs different and I think it would open the market for more companies to participate and maybe take the console domination by the few away.

It would facture the market but imo it would inflate the cost not lower it, as any good TV for gaming is already more than any console. We then have the issue of OS and how fracture that is with every manufacturer having their own.

There’s not really a reason to put high end gaming hardware in a TV. I could see them putting mobile equivalent stuff in there though.

In my country, I have to pay 920 € if want a PS5 Pro with a disc drive. Thats simply beyond insanity.

I think theres definitely a case for consoles abandoning the power race.

Consoles used to be affordable devices for people who like games. Now, with where things are heading, I could think of building a more modest PC, something I never thought of.

I don’t think so. I think the more readily the components are out there would lead to them being cheaper. The TVs might become expensive at first, but I think overtime it will even out. I wouldn’t say OS has matured in the TV industry and so I don’t really see that as a problem but even if it is the stores providing that content would be the main thing. At some point the Xbox app would or could be on all devices and other stores could follow. I do think we are capping tech as if they can’t go beyond the level, they’re at now.

Thing though is PC gaming is still more expensive; however, it is easier to accept. We’ve come to accepting the high prices of PC’s just like some phones. It seems going the PC/console hybrid is the way for NextGen cos there’s no way you’re selling anywhere close to 30million or more consoles at $800 or more. You can expect NextGen to start at $1000.

The entire point of consoles was affordable prices for competent hardware

People have shat on the Series S but going forward I think its clear something like an S needs to exist if the console market is to have a decent future

Seeing plenty of heavily PS centered accounts dumping on the Pro news and price. Even the most hardcore aren’t with it. It’s kinda nice to see there’s still some sense left.

I think consoles should be powerful and affordable. The series S is not the way forward because it lacks the power. The PS5 pro is not the way forward because it lacks the affordability.

Consoles need to be subsidized by the console manufacturers. It’s a simple formula. You will make your money back on game purchases, controllers, and subscriptions. Simple.

Nintendo has shown us what it looks like when hardware isn’t subsidized . The results are a weak console.

Companies aren’t willing to take hundreds of dollars in losses to sell new hardware to people, its just not on the cards anymore and hardware is getting too costly for manufacturing that chasing power is going to lead to stupid prices like this

We either stop chasing high power and accept lower power solutions like the S or you accept the terrible prices and deal with it unfortunately

Even the Switch 2 which will likely still be very weak by current standards is easily going to launch for AT LEAST $400

How do you make that work. Subsidizing is fine but how do you do that for something like a 4090. I don’t think it’s realistic anymore. Phil Spencer said some time ago that they lose $100-$200 per console which comes to about 5 to 10 games per person. I almost thing gaming would have to start payment plans.

Sony, with the PS5 prices was already making much more money than in the PS4 or PS2 days, they made a lot last quarter with consoles at 450-550€, this 800€ diskless thing is just extra greediness.

PS5Pro could cost 100-150€ more than diskless PS5, which would make it 550-600€ and still make a lot of money overall (not from the console maybe, but from the disc, the stand, controllers, games etc).

The thing is they are seeing Nintendo has even more profits and margins, and the way they do it is by making money per each console sold too.

It’s not that releasing powerful consoles like PS5 and 500€ back in it’s day is unsustainable, it’s that they simply want to make even more money than they are making now.

I think next generation will be definitely less powerful than this one was, not on Series S level, but for sure not on Series X neither.

Phil Spencer , Sony executives, Microsoft executives have all gone crazy. Just subsidize it. Yes it’s a painful pill to swallow but it’s the only way forward. Just make your money back on hit games. Maybe that’s the problem… these companies have forgotten how to make hit games. I would do things for Xbox as a gamer it would be easy… Give us Tony hawk, make a new 007, buy Sega, make a mascot fighter, mascot racer, make more Forza horizon maps, make special edition consoles with appealing bundles, easy stuff in my opinion

Yeah if the Switch 2 is unveiled soon and comes out the same time as the Pro, it’ll bury it, news-wise
