I read from another site with message board about how niche games like Atelier, Falcom games, Persona, and many more are selling low like less than a million at least in a year length. Therefore, they have to export to West and hope they can sell even more. I read this and think that’s not far off. Persona did well before bigger exposure, but it was still a niche game. That is until they went to Xbox, but not just because you opened a gate for new players but bigger opportunity from its offer.
I don’t recall Persona got a big marketing over at USA or in my case, NYC until now. Xbox treated Persona 5 like it’s a brand new title even when it’s been out for over 5 years old by that point. It got listed in top 20 most played title. After that, it became clear Atlus loved the result let alone Sega, and so, they kept their partnership and continue to advertise.
Persona 3 Reload sold well and at the time, was the fastest selling Atlus game ever. Not to mention, it was on Game Pass. Then Metaphor happened. The fact they sold a million already means the seed they planted since Persona 5 has became a beautiful blossom. Atlus isn’t seen as a niche or at least a hidden gem; they’re the star to follow. Not to mention, there is no Switch version.
We have franchise now entering Xbox family like Atelier and the return of Final Fantasy. Even if Xbox has the lowest margin of them all, there is a crowd willing to play. Elden Ring players gap between platforms weren’t so large, so opening up to Xbox is successful. While it’s no guarantee the sales will be like a million in first month, at least for the former, it will definitely be faster and stronger than what they are now.
Mostly agree with this. I’ve been saying for a couple of years now (after a bit of cloud gaming on Stadia and PS) that I only expect one more Xbox and two more PlayStation consoles (PS7.)
That said, internet infrastructure for cloud gaming is not where it needs to be in many parts of the world. Until that changes we’ll still get local hardware options. Either hybrids like the Switch / Steam Deck / Ally, or just regular mini PCs with a stripped down, TV-friendly OS.
The classic console’s days are numbered, regardless.
Game streaming only is 30+ years away. The infrastructure isn’t there 100% for digital downloads world wide so 100% game streaming isn’t happening any time soon.
Game streaming is great as an option. It won’t be the primary option until the world is ready, prepared and equipped for it so yeah, probably like 30+ years away.
I don’t think the world is ready for console prices going forward either. Could very well see a world where game streaming is default and local compute is primarily used by folks that want the absolute best quality (like people who still buy Blu-ray) or folks with terrible internet.
The world was ready for extremely expensive smartphones, and is being already ready for “expensive consoles”, just watch how console sales are very close to last gen while being much more expensive this time.
Same goes for PC gaming, it’s bigger than ever but also more expensive.
And the last thing, i don’t think Game Streaming is coming to save our wallets, companies are always looking for more and more profits, i’m sure we’ll see great deals as it starts growing, but then things will get expensive
I don’t fully agree with this for the following reasons:
Cellphones are subsidized, and they are a necessity as well, so they can’t really be compared.
PC gaming is indeed very popular, but looking at the Steam hardware survey, people don’t really run super high end gaming cards and CPUs and most of the popular games run on potato computers and are F2P, while consoles at least usually offer a semi high-end experience for what you pay.
-Game streaming is a hard one as stuff like Geforce now is reasonably priced when you think about it. At 26$ per month in Canada, I get a guaranteed RTX 4080 and high resolution and high fps streaming. When you multiply the cost on a yearly basis, you end up paying 312$ before taxes, and the lowest priced RTX 4080 before taxes is 1354$ right now, so subscribing for the high end tier would take over 4 years before having reached the price of the RTX 4080, and that is only one of the components in a PC. Game Pass Ultimate makes it even more interesting as they have streaming plus a library of games (but lower quality streaming).
I still don’t think streaming is ready for prime time as it has been with movies and music, but with more time in the oven it can definitely get there. The hard part is how the big corps make the economics work as running those data centers must be pretty expensive and not necessarily more energy efficient, as well as needing constant upgrades.
I don’t think that streaming would be viable for gaming on a consistent basis. Sure, it’s good for here and there but long term? Nah.
For example, I watched the 49ers/Seahawks football game last night via Amazon Prime Streaming and despite having 300mbps download, using their best option and never having any issues with streaming movies/shows, the quality was poor. Granted, it’s a live sporting event but I would think that gaming would require more bandwith and a better bitrate.
I just don’t see game streaming taking off for a few more decades. It’s all about digital downloads which is arguably the best option. Get the games faster, quicker, easier, can get good sales, patches, etc. are only via digital download. I could end up being wrong but that’s how I see it as of now.
I disagree with this because it’s NOT the base line console. It’s a high end model for the hardcore fans. If PlayStation 6 is $700/$800 and it bombs, then yeah, okay but a mid-gen refresh which is aimed at 5% of the fan base if that isn’t telling anyone anything.
I see a lot of heads in the sand; just because you don’t like that reality doesn’t match up with your particular vision of how the gaming industry should progress, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. All the data proves that something has to change, and hardware is verifiably, inarguably down for all parties compared to previous. Spinning bullshit doesn’t change that fact.
Depends though. I believe the portable and console release side by side for both Microsoft and Sony. I believe the portable will be $500 and the console will be $800. If this scenario happens, then we’ll see how it all goes. Me personally, im day one for both consoles because im a console guy regardless of what the price is.
Starship Troopers Extermination is exactly what I wanted it to be. It’s far from being a good looking game but it’s so fun and chaotic ! At the end of some Horde like mission, there’s so many dead arachnids that it’s hard to move around your base. You’re holding with your team on a pile of dead bugs !
Crossplay and coop ensures that you’ll always find people playing. 16 players in coop on a map is really something new and kind of fresh. The waves of bugs are massive ! I put the movie on repeat on a second screen while I played, it’s great !
Solo play is there with the voice of Casper Van Dien voicing the 4-5 lines briefings and yeah, it’s really bad. It’s just a way to level up your classes on your own and try the different weapons, but it’s some 5 min mission with 1 or 2 objectives on some map and that’s it.
Everything else is good fun, with a bit of grinding to get new weapons, trying the different classes. It’s one of those games you’ll keep coming back from time to time because there’s nothing quite like it.
It also plays decent on a controller and runs pretty well on Series X with no frame drop even with large waves of bugs at 60 FPS in performance. Performance is the way to go although there’s a Quality mode.
Well if i recall correctly, at this point of the generation, PS4 with disc was like 200-250€ cheaper depending on the region already, even if it’s not the same as the Pro thing, it’s not like actual consoles are cheap considering they’ve been in the market for 4 years already.
But yes you are right, Pro price is a step ahead even of the actual consoles, and it’ll have an impact in next-gen prices probably too D:
Im talking about really expensive phones, iPhones and Samsung ones, most people don’t buy those because they are a necessity, this said, it’s also bought for fashion? purposes too, which is not the case of the consoles, so i agree it isn’t the best comparison.
As for PC’s, there are a lot of PC’s with the power of the actual consoles already, and these weren’t cheap specially a few years ago, and even “cheaper” PC’s aren’t nearly as cheap as they used to be.
Isn’t the Switch going to be the best selling console ever?
And as for PS5, while it’s selling like 5% less consoles than PS4, i think it did already made more profits to Sony than any other full generation, last one included? Sure COVID helped but still…
Worldwide in my opinion the only threat to consoles is the PC, at least for the short-mid term, as someone said, Streaming will still take a long time, at least for most countries.
