XboxEra Community Hangout |OT12| The Dirty Dozen

I know that the XboxEra crew aren’t saints, but demonization? That’s going a bit far.

Oh, you mean demonetization!!

Yeah, I was trying to catch up. lol. I knew something was off.

Yeah, only thing that interested me in SGF was Metaphor and Monster Hunter Wilds. No offemse, i felt it was rather lackluster overall.

By the way, will folks see the events starting today or will rather wait for the Xbox Showcase instead? Am contemplating myself if i will watch the showcases today.

Pixel art is not a genre and pixel art can mean many different things, also there were some pretty cool stuff shown yesterday (especially at the day of the devs show) so it’s a little unfair to try to diminish what the indie scene is doing by describing a whole scene this way…

I was thinking this exact thought during the Summer Games Fest but the Day of the Devs showcase got me to reconsider.

I don’t know how the SGF was curated, or if devs/pubs had to pay to be shown, but there was clearly more variety in the DotD show. Variety in every category. From aesthetics to gameplay to genre…I didn’t feel as burnt out when watching it.

More than that, the SGF Indie games seem to have art styles that seemed so familiar and gameplay that seemed so familiar and that was part of my initial impression. But some of those DOTD games have visuals I’ve never seen before and some of them had gameplay I’ve never seen before.

So for that reason I actually disagree with your statement (one that I shared during the first show). If you weren’t able to watch the DOTD I would suggest watching it. Even watch it at 2x speed and scrub through it to get the gist of it.

It’s almost like SGF showcased a caricature of indie games and DOTD showed actual indie games.

E3 time of year was just so awesome, and clowns like Geoff and Sony totally screwed that up with their arrogance and lack of concern for what most gamers enjoyed. That “Summer Game Snooze Fest” yesterday was an embarrassment for something that he kept saying when trying to drive the stake through E3 would be this awesome new “evolved” format for the future of gaming that would be a better replacement for E3. And of course, Sony just does whatever the heck they want regardless of what fun their fans may have had with the big E3 time showcases that I enjoyed too even as an Xbox fan.

Those who wanted E3 dead deserve the crap that we get now like yesterday, but fortunately Xbox still has some E3 timeframe magic in their big showcase approach that will hopefully save the day tomorrow with some awesome games and a ton of them coming to Xbox Game Pass to play!

True. Just want a different style like more of 2D actual size model sprite rather than chibi. But that’s just me.

Day of the devs also is better at presenting because the people involved genuinely care about little games and have the experience to help people who are new to this showcase the unique elements. Its always more of an art show than the commercial show that Geoff runs. Loved the Cocoon concert after the show.

Separate thought, When I was watching yesterday at first I was fine with G3 and there were a couple things there that I did like, but basically the entire second half or more was not for me.

I know we’re not supposed to just post a reply and say “I agree” but… I agree! P-phil_rnd

I’ve quoted the parts I agree with the most, but pretty much everything you wrote I think is spot on. I don’t understand the nostalgia for E3, I don’t understand the dislike (and at times, pretty disgusting bullying) of Geoff Keighley, and overall I think what we have now is an improvement to the E3 way of doing things.

Personally I’m waiting. I was going to watch the Games Radar showcase today, but after that very unimpressive show yesterday I’ll just hold off.

I will just be looking over the Future Games Show later tonight. If anything good is shown or a game that im interested in shows up, I’ll just watch the trailer as im not sitting through that as always mediocre show.

It’s crazy that many things happened yet felt like nothing happened. The execution hurts it.

For those (like me) that couldn’t watch Day of the Devs:

Out of those, I like the sound of Screenbound the most:

While you navigate a first-person 3D area, you’ll have to simultaneously manage a 2D sidescroller using the handheld device in your hands. You can only see enemies in the 2D world, but you’ll have to pay attention to the 3D world to properly platform. It’s a unique pitch that we can’t wait to get our hands on.

Again, I think the game could be good but that trailer went too hard.

Definitely agree on the roguelite and Souls-like trends - I can’t do (and can’t be arsed with) difficult games, and I like stories with progression so most roguelites bore me to tears (and are often difficult too).

I’m really glad there’s been a counter-trend with “cozy” games, and that the platform holders and biggest publishers have stuck with accessible games

Keighley was pretty pivotal in killing off E3 having started a rival show at the same time despite having a relationship with them - him and Sony are by far the biggest villains in killing something that was the biggest celebration of games in the world (EA, Nintendo and the ESA also share some blame particularly the latter).

I’ve no real issue with the online showcases as they do work for me, but it does feel something has been lost without such a massive trade show where the big publishers face off and show their wares.

I’m nostalgic from it as a kid where there were massive announcements then huge editions of your favourite gaming magazines with demo discs full of the games shown.

Keighley has profited a lot from the death of E3, and it’s not like the Game Awards wouldn’t have been enough by themselves without having his own summer show - it does feel like both are to feed his ego (more games, less droning on ffs) and to push the games and people he likes more than celebrate the industry.

His bromance with Kojima is funny cringe at least, but he’s generally been pretty pro-PlayStation anti-Xbox for years now - super enthusiastic about PlayStation exclusives but like many seems upset / meh when it goes the other way, he compared Xbox and Game Pass to cable TV (low quality, high quantity) vs PlayStation as HBO (high quality, low quantity) and generally just goes where the fans are which is mostly PlayStation.

Fair enough to him I guess, I doubt he cares if many Xbox gamers can’t stand him - I wouldn’t care either if I were earning quarter of a million a minute either

I love day of the dead, but to me this year it felt like all of the stuff I’d like to play is only coming to PC. Very little in there is announced for Xbox, even with ID@Xbox being one of the major sponsors. I prefer playing on Xbox, love my achievements! Don’t know why it cannot have, at least, a simultaneous release on the windows store.

I miss the E3 hype, SGF is a far cry from it in my opinion. GK made himself look like the good guy at first, but he has now become the villain.
