XboxEra Community Hangout |OT11| It Goes To 11!

Xbox discourse defaults to toxic even during positive momentum. Imagine it with actually bad and horrible moves like that. Any sense will be lost. As much as we can easily point at extreme and biased reactions, sometimes you just gotta see the reality and this company doesn’t know how to control perception and manage a positive momentum for long. You can understand why so many of their consumer facing products have not been successful even when on paper they should as they create great products.

Digital is inevitable. Cars have declined in the number with CD players, TVs no longer have a DVD slot built into the side, and soon consoles will not have discs either. It is the way things are going and pretending Microsoft is to blame is madness.

Yeah, I used the XSX BD player only to see Blade Runner 2049, last UHD BD I bought years ago and exactly zero times for actual games. Figures on people I know both on Xbox and PS are similar, nodoby use the optical discs anymore.

They will offer a very expensive external drive like Sony is already doing.

I think quick resume killed off discs for me. Why have the ability to switch between games in seconds if i also have to get up, go across the room, mess around with cases etc. Quick resume was designed for digital.

It is indeed a problem in the long term. Maybe an external disc drive could be the solution though but designing one every generation to fit your system could become a problem long term. Or maybe they can figure out a wireless disc drive solution that you could keep over the span of several generations?

Emerging market where people will want to own their games and not just get Gamepass will have lots of users and those a price conscious. You bought physical specifically as it was cheaper and might want that resale value as well. I have stopped wanting to trade in since the release of Xbox One and have been all digital since just like on PC and I feel that’s the way it should have been for a long time, but some people haven’t. And the problem isn’t that maybe only 15-20% still buy physical or whatever, but more the fact that it’s the perception it gives. Like if next gen Xbox is the only one without digital, you can bet it’s going to be everywhere, just like the Xbox One fiasco, an it will affect sales long term unfortunately.

It’s decision that make sense from a business perspective and maybe from long term trends and statistics, but that people don’t want to hear and will be unhappy with.

Why? Selling a new optical disc drive is not really different from selling a new console.

Depends what you mean by uncertainty and Xbox’s future

If you care about hardware or “winning the console war” I can understand why people might be a bit down right now with the rumors of multiplats or whatever

But if you care about Xbox games, the first party studios, GP and the overall ecosystem then yes, Xbox’s future has never been brighter, not really debatable

This would be the best way of doing it

They no doubt want to go digital and making them digital only consoles will allow them to make the consoles for cheaper, just release an external add on that plays discs separately and charge a price that doesn’t lose them money that way they can get the best of both worlds

They can still sell their digital only consoles to the vast majority of people and the few that still care about discs or physical BC will still have that separate option so they are not left behind

So… I kinda want to get into the Nier series. Which game should I play first? (Series X)

  • Replicant
  • Automata

That one is tricky, I don’t think there’s really a wrong answer because the stories are mostly pretty seperate, and with the new story content in Replicant there’s a good argument to start with either story wise.

I’d maybe say to start with Automata - I think it’s a much more consistent experience gameplay wise and might be easier entry point to get into the franchise. The Replicant remake of Nier did an excellent job improving upon the gameplay but there’s still some awkwardness to the structure of it all that might cause people to bounce off if they don’t know how good the overall experience of a Nier game will be.

Nier (the 360 version is better, yes i said it) and Automata are self contained enough so you can start either one first story wise. But if you play Automata first (like I did) Nier will be more repetitive because the routes there are not that much different both in story and gameplay. I thought Automata did a better job keeping it fresh.

As someone with a pretty decent physical collection I’m not thrilled about future consoles without disc drives. Just give us some kind of option even if it’s an add-on. Especially with what an amazing job Xbox has done with BC, I don’t want to have to hang on to old console hardware just because the newer console doesn’t support discs.

Replicant before Automata. There are story, quests and characters that will have a deeper meaning to you in Automata if you play Replicant first.

If you read the novel you realize that the Brother version is better and makes more sense. Even without it just think about it how after the time skip the brother grows and can use more weapons than just one handed weapon. Doesn’t make too much sense for an old man who only gets an SM mask. Or why so many side quests are just fetch quest. You are just a kid and the people want to help you get some money to help your sister. When he grows he thinks more about the world like why Emil and Kaine always sleep outside. And the new ending is a better bridge to Automata.

I played both and the dynamic between Weiss and Dad Nier is better, but overall Brother Nier > Dad Nier

I respectfully disagree, largely in part because hearing this gruff older man excitedly talking in a gravelly voice about the power of friendship is hysterical - and I prefer that Emil’s tastes line up more with my own

@lunanto Nier is a diamond in the rough and Automata is more polished. I would say Replicant first, but it’s frankly dated in design and more than a bit tedious in places. If you think you can roll with that (and you will be rolling a lot) and aren’t crazy enough to try to 100% it then I would say that’s a better place to start.

Just be aware that you might burn out and not get to Automata at all.
