Mhmmm. Make Wolfenstein 2009 backwards compatible in January and i will patiently wait for the next drop until Summer.
Deal?
People arenât capable of having a nuanced conversation in regards to non traditional gaming models.
People would just rather dunk on subscriptions and Ubisoft for free brownie nosed points from gamers like certain Larian devs currently do.
It just seems like so much scaremongering to me. Wake me up when thereâs any evidence whatsoever that the ability to purchase games is going away, and subscriptions arenât just an additional option for access.
Subscription has long been the dominant access model for music and movies, but you can still buy CDs and Blu-rays if you want to. Even if physical game discs fall by the wayside, thereâs no sign that game purchases are going away.
Lolwut , I didnât realize theyâre skipping pc too . Such a dumb move
I think itâs one of the last genius moves of the old Sony aligned board, which got sacked last year.
People love to bring up music , but streaming saved that industry . It pretty much killed piracy for many . Also I feel streaming movies and TV shows slowed down piracy too . Also, sub services does provide a great source for discovery because there are plenty of musicians, shows , movies, and video games that benefited from discovery via sub services .
I think for video game sub services we canât look at it through the same lense as other forms of entertainment when it comes to streaming . I donât think sub services hurt quality of games because most games today are coming hot and I donât think sub service influences the lack of quality in games at launch or in general
Correct me if Iâm wrong, but I think that there was a lot of skepticism regarding the viability of Steam, given the prevalence and ease of pirating PC games. If memory serves, Newellâs attitude was that providing easy and cheap access to games would offset that.
Obviously PC game piracy is still around but Valve plainly donât have any issue staying profitable. I think that the viability of the subscription model is resting on the same principle: providing cheap and easy access to games, such that that slice is profitable. Itâs one facet of an entire portfolio, one which doesnât eschew traditional purchase-based models but supplements it.
Frankly, I was extremely dubious about subscription services for games. I didnât have any subscriptions at all before I decided to give Game Pass a shot, and that was something that happened by degrees.
First I had to downsize my massive collection of physical games, I had to dip my toe into digital purchases (looking at Steam as an example of a successful and popular digital storefront). I had to take a hard look at the games I have access to and my playing habits. I determined that it was worth putting down money for the conversion trick to see how it works. It took several steps that I wasnât especially motivated to contemplate.
I think that MSâs big challenge is in making GP ubiquitous enough that people are aware of the great value it offers while being able to access it extremely easily. Theyâre clearly working on both, given their first-party bolstering and domain expansion. Turn the steps that I took haltingly and make it into a gentle slope, so to speak.
âvertical stand sold separately.â
They were fined by EU if I remember correctly and forced to add it to the description of their bundles.
I think the last part is the tough part for Microsoft . I think the general audience arenât aware of it or see the value in the service . Microsoft needs to find ways to reach the general audience about the service . For example, some of my friends didnât know what gamepass was, but liked the value of ps+ extra and subbed to it and were happy to have acccess to library of games . Now imagine if those gamers got to try out gamepass
Exactly, and even that is presumably contingent on your friends already having a PlayStation. Itâs the default console, and thatâs a big hurdle for MS to overcome. A push to PC, TVs, and mobile (and yes, potentially other consoles though Iâm not keen on kicking off that discussion) makes a lot of sense in that context.
When technology progresses, it comes with change whether thatâs business models like subscriptions or how games are made( like AI tech). Some people donât like change so they lash out on it, saying the âold waysâ is perfectly fine as it is. There is a reason why the industry are moving on from the traditional sales model and change is gonna happen wether people like it or not.

My God, this game is really happening.
I feel like thereâs still a good amount of potential growth for MS with GP, if console sales werenât so bad and the PC store wasnât so ass I think it would help and of course CoD is on the way which might shift a fair amount of casuals to the service
That being said, subs are always going to have a limit, Netflix is at the 200m range iirc and it doesnât seem to be growing anymore, probably why they are expanding into other areas
If they can nail their mobile store and get their big games on there natively going forward, thatâs where the real growth for GP will be
Since I stopped collecting games and caring about owning games since the second half of the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 generation, I have no issues with what Ubisoft wants to do.
As long as I get their games on Ubisoft+ day one for a cheap monthly rental, I will be a happy camper.
