I think my Series S may be defective. As I wrote in before, Starfield crashes often every play session, and there is also a texture loading issue that occurs in a few games. The textures will appear with a super low resolution (frequently but not as often as the Starfield crashes), but the issue fixes itself after a reset. This issue turns Starfield planets and clothes into mud. The worst instance was probably in Batman Arkham City where all of the textures covering all of the buildings will turn into mud.

Anyone else experience these issues or heard about it elsewhere?

Idk if Iā€™m going to wait for the X-Cylinder Series X or just bite the bullet to upgrade sooner. Shame, I never bought a defective console before (never had a 360 red ring). Iā€™ve own the XSS for too long to return, but itā€™s not a big deal. This series S got me through the console shortages, and Iā€™ve been wanting to upgrade anyway.

I have about 40 hours played and donā€™t think iv had a crash yet, thereā€™s definitely something off if itā€™s happening that much

Of course it could be the game and some rare bug if causing an issue, especially if itā€™s it only happening in Starfield and not other games but I canā€™t say iv experienced anything like that

So you have problems with Starfield and Batman ? Doesnā€™t look good. Would try to factory reset the console before buying a new console.

And if you canā€™t wait, Black Friday is right around the corner for the XSX.

Is it just the textures? If you go back to your dashboard is everything ok? I ask because I occasionally have a handshake issue with my Xbox and my tv where it only displays in 480 resolution and thereā€™s no way to fix it without restarting the console.

Honestly, I think the NPC/enemies density in Starfield is too much even for Series X sometimes.

I have had one or two crashes in other games, but those couple of crashes occurred over the course of an entire play-through of the story. In contrast, Starfield will crash multiple times every few hours. Yeah itā€™s weird that itā€™s only really a problem with Starfield.

Thatā€™s a good idea. Iā€™ll try the factory reset.

Yeah itā€™s just the textures. The dashboard always looks perfectly fine. The texture issue only occurs in some games. For example, never had an issue with Preyā€™s, Doom Eternalā€™s, and Ori 2ā€™s textures.

Yeah I think the issues are more pronounced when playing Starfield because of how the game needs more CPU/memory (I assume).

Also try a different HDMI cable and slot.

Iā€™ve had issues with Arkham Cityā€™s textures before, but it was mostly them not loading in properly and looking super blurry. I canā€™t really hazard a guess as to what exactly is wrong but yeah, your console is probably defective.

I know you said itā€™s out of warranty, but it might still be worth a try to complain to customer service if you have the time. I doubt theyā€™d send you a new console for free but maybe you could get a discount or promo code or something if youā€™re lucky.

This isnā€™t the same thing but thatā€™s what I did when my last phone broke out of warranty, and the Samsung CS rep hooked me up with a pretty huge discount on a new phone.

I might give that a try. Thanks. Do you think I should contact Best Buy (who I bought it from) or Xbox?

In higher level planets because of how many enemies there can be, my game takes a couple of seconds to quick save. One time, it froze completely for over a minute and corrupted the save during a quick save.

Hopefully Bethesda will start resolving the issue with the next update. On reddit some people have been reporting on the steambeta and performance has improved on PC even without DLSS. With it I think someone said something about 180-200fps on 1440p, of course they said they had a 4080 so grain of salt for us on Xbox.

Yeah saves and loading screens are particularly dicey for me. Thatā€™s when the game is most likely to crash.

Iā€™d go with Xbox. Be polite and friendly, but firm about your disappointment. Try to convey that youā€™re an enthusiastic fan and your experience was soured by something outside of your and their control.

Note the name of the CS rep if you get it and pepper it in here and there, try to get them to empathize with your situation. Be subtle but try to name-drop the ways youā€™re a good customer: You were having a great time playing Starfield (through Game Pass?) with your Series S and now you canā€™t and itā€™s a big bummer.

Donā€™t assign blame or imply youā€™ll go to social media or anything like that. Tell them you appreciate their help even if all theyā€™re doing is running down their troubleshooting list. This varies per person and circumstances obviously but my Microsoft e-mail is a One Piece reference and the reps usually make a small comment about it, helps establish rapport.

Most of the time Iā€™ve had success with this sort of thing was by being patient and letting them run through their script while being good-natured about it. Once itā€™s been exhausted is your best chance. If they offer to escalate you or transfer departments, accept gratefully but get a case number first.

Iā€™d jot down a few bullet points that summarize the issue, and get used to running through them often. Stress the parts about how it happened out of the blue (not because of anything you did) and how youā€™re eager to get back to playing games on your Xbox (implying ā€œif this gets fixed to my satisfaction I will happily go back to spending money on youā€). Donā€™t try to bribe them with a good review (you should always leave a good review regardless) but if they bring it up or ask be enthusiastic about it.

Thatā€™s all that comes to mind right now, best of luck! Iā€™ve never been on the other side of CS so I donā€™t know if any of this is counter-productive or more trouble than itā€™s worth.
