Depends on what site youā€™re on.

Now that i own an Xbox series X, i truly wish there was a PlayStation equivalent of series S to buy

it is easy for PS players to enter xbox ecosystem but not for xbox players to enter PS ecosystem

Everything on the xbox side is just so easy to access, GP, Series S hell even just cloud if you donā€™t want a console

A Series S style PS would be cool to see but even then, I still wouldnā€™t have interest until they have an actual GP equivalent and not just some slightly improved PS+

So the most loved people on earth are Jack Black and Susan Sarandon

Donā€™t ask why

Itā€™s spiraled into digging up old G4/Xplay clips where the hosts made fun of JRPGs or Japan as a whole because Yoshi-P said he thinks of the term ā€œJRPGā€ as derogatory (he realizes itā€™s a positive term now though) because of the way the Western media used to treat them. I will just say itā€™s extremely crazy what they were allowed to say on those shows back thenā€¦

Now as for FF16 being a JRPG, Iā€™d personally say it is one. It can be compared to one of the older Ys games in a way, which were also action combat and had just the one playable character. ā€œARPGā€ is a popular term for this subset of JRPGs, and thatā€™s where FF16 falls under.

PS5 all digital edition is $400 USD, not too bad of a price.

My thought is that JRPG isnā€™t a very useful term because the nation of origin is not a meaningful differentiator for a genre.

Yeah, it might have made some sense back in the olden days. Now not so much.

I actually stumbled upon them just today. The thing is and I know not many donā€™t like it, but it was the thing at the time. Sort of like non-heterosexual jokes in movies, mainly from Adam Sandler movies. Then again, I canā€™t really keep up on whatā€™s offensive or not in internet sphere anymore. That South Park episode about Christmas being offensive aged well, which is wild and perhaps sad. Honestly, I believe itā€™s just an internet thing and if so, stay that way.

They really do need a sensible sized console, bonus for us if its cheaper too.

Itā€™s an option, but too bad. Sony doesnā€™t make much of them to be available

I can agree. That ā€œhumorā€ is what was ā€œinā€ at the time so they more or less had to do it to be popular. Although even then some of those clips I thought went too far even for the time (the one talking about nukes especially). Nonetheless I donā€™t condemn the hosts or writers of the shows or anything, thereā€™s people elsewhere saying ā€œthese people need to be tracked down and shamed!ā€.

I guess the thing thatā€™s making it worse is that it doesnā€™t feel like jokes, with how the Western games media really did feel like they wanted Japan out of the industry then. Weā€™ve certainly come a long way, nowadays we have stuff like Xbox executives on stage more or less saying ā€œJapan, please, PLEASE put your games on Xbox!ā€ :stuck_out_tongue:

There was definitely a lot of Japanese hate in the 360/ps3 days

It certainly didnā€™t help that they seemed to completely lose their way in terms of good games in that gen, Capcom, Konami and Square went to complete shit and major series like Resident Evil were at all time lows

3 top tier pubs who were at the very top of the industry fell so far and genreā€™s that were once the top of the industry like JRPGs in the ps1/2 gens were getting destroyed by western RPGā€™s and shooters like Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock and CoD

For some it was just sad seeing how they were falling from such high heights but there were definitely some real shitty people with an agenda, not to mention salty devs who were tired of Japanese devs being considered the best

Itā€™s a weird thing because Iā€™ve seen a few games that are called ā€œjrpgā€ despite not originating in Japan and on the flip side games like Elden Ring , Demon/Dark Souls have never been to my knowledge referred to as ā€œjrpgā€ despite being rpgs that originate in Japan. I think jrpg refers more to a style of game more than the country of origin at least these days.

I actually have seen the From games called JRPGs, but itā€™s normally in the context of these discussions. It is such a meaningless genre that people instead defer to calling games soul-like or monster hunter style games.

I think you could probably come up with some meaningful characteristics of what we used to call JRPGs, but it should probably be its own genre.

Actually, let me expound on this. How a genre is titled is ultimately not important, Yoshida was more concerned that some devs (white dudes) made some disparaging remarks about Japanese games 20+ years ago and he has a chip on his shoulder about it.

I wish he was more concerned about including a more diverse cast of characters in FF16, something he has control over then what some people said over 20 years ago, but thatā€™s just me.

Iā€™ve been following this on Twitter. It makes me sad, I like Sessler but he is completely self-owning with this. All he had to say was, it was 15+ years ago, we were dumb, those jokes were dumb. End of story. But instead heā€™s dying on that hill for some inexplicable reason.

What he ended up saying instead? Itā€™s rather odd how many people thinks a long explanation isnā€™t necessary when it can be done in few words.

Heā€™s like, super defensive over it, trying to hit back and generally having a big meltdown. Like if he had just said ā€œYeah, haha, that edgy humor from back then sure looks stupid nowā€ that would have been the end of the whole thing. Poor Morgan Webb, I bet she wishes he would just stop feeding the fire.
