If someone doesn’t like you referring to their game as something, don’t. It’s not up to us to decide what someone might find offensive, even if we disagree or don’t fully understand why. I guess that’s my take on this JRPG thing (and life in general) as a Japanese person.
Yeah people naturally like to label and compartmentalize everything. It’s the same with the "Character action " subgenre of action game. (games like DMC, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, Hi Fi Rush etc) Most people think of them as just beat em up or hack n slash. When you put any thought to it the term “character action” can probably apply to most games.
They are readily available here (SWE) this year. Both alone and in bundles with God of War: Ragnarök. In fact all consoles are available atm.
Austrian court rules against Sony/EA in lootbox case: classified as illegal gambling; Sony ordered to refund cost
I think a better differentiation between RPG’s rather than whatever country they are made in is things like: Is it turnbased or real time combat? Is it first person, third or isometric? Etc. Etc.
I enjoyed Divinity Original Sin 2 a lot. Is that a BRPG? (Belgian Role Playing Game). I just think it’s weird.
I think JRPG has rarely been used to describe a game based on one that came out of Japan but rather a style despite them almost always coming out of Japan anyway
Like if a western dev came out with a game that played exactly like the ps1 Final Fantasy’s, everyone would still be calling it a JRPG
Im sure some people use JRPG in the literal way of describing a game coming out of Japan but personally at least, when I think of JRPG, I think turn based, party of playable characters and/or just an overall tone that feels like something western devs don’t really make
Games like FF, Tales of, Blue Dragon and Persona all feel very different to one another but yet if you played them you’ll instinctively feel like you know they were all Japanese made
Yes I’ve seen/heard of Chained Echoes for example being called a JRPG (which it is), it’s not made in Japan (it’s German) but has all the elements you expect of the genre.
Even for me, I noticed the only ones I specifically label “JRPGs” are the “4-in-a-row-turn-based-combat” games. SRPGs from Japan, I still just call them SRPGs (sometimes I vary between SRPG and TRPG though lol). Dungeon crawlers, the “first person perspective” kind, I still just call them DRPGs. Earlier I compared FFXVI to Ys and said they are ARPGs.
I guess it is weird to have a country’s name in a video game genre, as some say “othering” it. Ultimately though even as Yoshi-P said it’s a positive term now and just as you say it helps tell you the characteristics of the game.
The conversation of “are Souls games and Pokemon JRPGs” is one I will never wrap my head around though lol.
Yeah, I tend to think the same. Then a game pops into my head that contradicts it and think “f-it, who cares anyway” lol
There are only 2 categories of games:
- Those in GamePass
- Those not in GamePass
That and the 120 dollar premium tier. Thats what i did.
But ive barely used my ps5.
No need to be sorry, it’s hilarious. Always in good fun.
You never know…
This is peak…
What kids say these days?
I’m saying it now, starfield will be better than fallout 4 and redfall will be better than deathloop. But both will score worse on metacritic due to the Xbox tax.
There’s no Xbox tax. If those games are great they will get their deserved score much like games like Hi Fi Rush and Forza Horizon have.
I’m telling you right now that it’s all leading up to starfield having bad scores. The media keep pushing this narrative like starfield is needed for Xbox to survive. Like they want to bury starfield and then bury Xbox.
there are totally going to be sites that give starfield and redfall bad scores because they are xbox games. likethat one publication that gave hi fi rush a bad score because it was an xbox game and they even said that. whats crazy is those scores are still counted towards meta despite the bias
