Xbox Series S OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED, $299, £249. 512 GB NVME SSD, 60% Smaller than XSX, 1440p up to 120 FPS, Ray-Tracing, All Digital and More

Next week…

Time to do some damage to the CC.

RTX3080 XSX

Ouch.

…assuming you’ll be able to get a 3080.

This was news I was not expecting to wake up to this morning :open_mouth:.

Pretty decent price, I could see buying it for my living room. Would be a lot more compelling with no online paywall, but maybe I can mask it with a Gamepass Ultimate Sub.

Discless XSX, maybe?

Nah I knew they didn’t, but it is nice seeing MS’s bold strategy finally getting some of the reaction it deserves. :stuck_out_tongue:

It is the most classy “ooopsy” from MS. I love seeing news dropped like that !

Is it considered a real mic drop though, like “oops I dropped the mic too soon” ? :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Really tempting. All of that for 300 … it’s quite the package for real.

Nice. gulp let’s see Sony’s slim console. How did a nitwit like Xbox get so damn tasteful?

A mic slip.

And I guess running out of 1S and 1X stock early due to the extra lockdown sales made this announcement a whole lot easier with no need for a last gen fire sale or deep discounts.

Gotta feel sorry for anyone who recently picked up a 1X though would they if they’d have known XSS price?

Right, so sleeping on it, and seeing it officially announced this morning, this is the next gen XBOX I am getting. Perfect for the games that won’t come to the Switch, which will still be my main console. And the SSD storage size doesn’t bother me, since I’ll only be getting a handful of games a year for this. Just fantastic. Let me pre-order it already, dammit!

Edinburgh is rumored to be the xCloud variant of the XSX SoC since it doesn’t need to be on the split mobo design.

Conspiracy theory: This seems like it was an intentional leak, the purpose of which not being fully clear. What if the folks at Microsoft caught wind of an imminent Sony pre-order/price announcement and wanted to steal a bit of their thunder, but because there was some heel dragging, someone took matters into their own hands?

Ha, this pure conjecture, but I can’t help but wonder why/how this situation came to be.

Won’t need much space if you have gamepass and play games with xcloud.

Only using the space for games you purchase.

Can anyone help me get through this idea: new tech of compression and data streaming with the ssd/ram may cause nextgen games to not inflate in sizes. As in the 100g games that rely on HDD won’t be as big if it was smart deliver for ssd?

I thought I read somewhere that a reason games today are so big is because of the duplicate data they need to put in due to how slow the data reads with hdd.

With time we’ll see more games optimized for the SSDs and take up less space. Right now, games write certain chunks of data multiple times of the HDD to help with streaming but that won’t be an issue with the SSDs. Additionally, updated compression hardware and software should help bring down the sizes of files on the SSD, with things like textures installed at their compressed size but they’ll be their full quality by the time the GPU sees them thanks to the various compression tools in the system.

Thank you for the quick reply! This Lines up with that space optimization will be a next-gen reality too.

I wonder if anyone will talk about this. Sounds like something perfect to do by giving examples with smart delivery.
