Xbox multi platform discussion

Positive :

  1. Getting more money from diff platforms = hopefully more money for Xbox studios to continue to make the games I love

2.Gets the audience that haven’t played the last 2 gens of Xbox games to see that yeah they have missed out on quality games and hopefully make some new fans out out of it.

Gunna add my Negative now ;: If they half ass their new hardware and sell half as much as the Series duo, how do they entice 3rd party Devs to continue make games for it?

Games on Gamepass make more moneys. More games can come to game pass. More people get Gamepass. Gamepass makes more moneys.

It’s a nice cycle

i will give my two cent on this if it works:

1: Less games will be moneyhatted by playstation or just made for Nintendo and that will force for a no exclusive era were competition is made via innovation and capabilities.

2: It would potentially force known third party studios or publishers that have skipped the platform to finally show genuine support and make it so Xbox is never once the ignored party as it once was.

3: It would force playstation and nintendo to go the same direction as them as their revenue rises with more and more games.

4: It will increase the likelyhood of independent studios going more and more on Xbox publishing then ever before as they can potentially bring their games to multiple places all at once when compared to playstation publishing.

5: Playstation and Nintendo users would be buying more games in order to fund future gamepass deals with well know publishers and studios, which in turn would make them more play anywhere games. Those would be the ideal scenarios, i will however respond with the negatives at a latter date as that topic needs a bit more information on my part to really give some of the downsides to the strategy.

It’s been a long time since I posted on this forum, but I’ve been following the evolution of Xbox over the past few months and I can say this: Microsoft has completely fooled its users.

Changing strategy when over 30 million people have chosen their console is incredibly disrespectful. I spent 500 euros on an Xbox and 500 euros on a PS5, and for what? When I could have easily spent money on just one piece of hardware and played both PlayStation and Xbox games? Saving money is incredibly important to me. And I feel like I wasted 500 euros when I could have saved it for more important things.

Game Pass? It’s not a great benefit at all, I subscribe to it occasionally because I can’t afford to keep any subscription active.

Xbox wants to change strategy? Very good, but they should have made it clear BEFORE the release of the Xbox Series X/S or wait for the next generation to change strategy and make it clear before the next Xbox arrives.

I don’t accept this: having changed strategy in the middle of a generation and having sold Xbox and its ecosystem on false promises.

This right here is why Xbox is in a rather rude awakening if the next gen does not deliver on the promises made to its userbase.

NEVER take the userbase for granted. Otherwise you are in for a VERY bad time on all fronts.

This part feels weird because history has shown xbox fans have the right to be skeptical. Plus, a lot of what’s happening is a one way street because Sony and Nintendo aren’t putting their games on xbox. So, it makes sense why many have fears about this move because many have heavily invested in the ecosystem. Plus, logically install base most likely shrinks if games are releasing on Playstation and Nintendo because gamepass isn’t that strong of a selling point because if it was we wouldn’t see series console have this big of decline compared to XB1 and gamepass growth wouldn’t have stagnated

Anyway, I won’t fully go into this topic by showing my fears, but it does feel the community has become a bit toxic towards people that have legit concerns and looking too much at things as a Microsoft shareholder rather than an Xbox user.

At the end of the day, communication is key and Microsoft needs to improve their communication towards xbox fans because I think we’re heading into a place where install base shrinks and we have no clue what that means for xbox users. So, it makes it hard for me to invest in ecosystem outside of gamepass and I have shifted purchases towards titles that are play anywhere or on Playstation because they’ve lost some trust.

Lastly, Microsoft needs to let us know what their plans because I haven’t seen energy this down in awhile. I think they need to ensure what’s happening to software, benefits for xbox users for multiplatform push, and what they’re going to do to differentiate themselves from the other hardware manufacturers. I feel the longer the wait to tell us the message the more damage it does to install base due to potential exodus

that’s just my 2 cents

  • games get to be played by more users due to having access to all platforms
  • potentially more risks can be taken due to having large audience
  • More users get to experience xbox games because I feel the negativity towards xbox games was due to people not wanting to buy an xbox or having a gaming PC. I think sentiment towards xbox games changing because games that were being clowned at now have people waiting for a Playstation or Nintendo to play them
  • should improve devs morale due to potential larger amount of people playing
  • third party developers and indies could potentially get a bag from Microsoft due to partnerships like Ninja Gaiden where MS foots the bill but game launches on gamepass and day one multiplatform. I think that’s a positive and many devs will take on these deals because you get a bag from Microsoft and not just limited to xbox and Pc for revenue. This could also help gamepass improve it’s strength due to more potential games launching on service
  • users can play games where they want to and hopefully this pushes Microsoft to make play anywhere mandatory. I think having a stornger play anywhere push can make people feel more positive due to library can be accessed on multiple devices
  • larger community for multiplayer games, so better chance to survive as a live service. I love Halo Infinite, but I think it would’ve benefited if they had potentially more users playing the multiplayer. It’s not a guarantee a game will be a success even though having access by Sony and Nintendo users, but it improves the chances
  • Journalist might clear their biases and give Microsoft games a fair shake. I felt a lot of the media has too much bias against xbox which is why we’ve seen some awful articles due to them not being xbox fans, so hopefully that changes

I think MS is trying to mitigate that part by having a common development platform for both PC and Xbox, something they already do but that will be even more similar next gen.

All devs already make PC games. So if Xbox version is just the PC version with added achievements and Xbox Live integration, 99.9% of the work to make it work on Xbox is already done.

More eyes. Marketing makes more sense for Microsoft and actually works when the barriers are taken down. I also think in some way Xbox is becoming like the sole supplier of games on consoles, in a way you can sort of saying they are beginning to dominate the flow of gaming or distribution of games.

New Jez article:

I agree that there should be more Play Anywhere titles, but you don’t have to cut down the ones that do support it. I guess Indie developers don’t count unless they’re the big AAA ones. :frowning:

It’s all about reductionism and hyperbole these days…

True, but there is some truth to what he has discussed in the sense that not a lot of publishers, outside indies publishers or studios, are really keen on the whole play anywhere aspect, unless you are Sega, who has been pretty okay on this play anywhere strategy of Xbox for a while now, with Square Enix, Konami and Koei Tecmo also seeming to want to hop on board as well. But work needs to be done in that area more so than ever. They did good for Developer Direct but we will see.

I do agree, however, that it feels like they should put focus on the ecosystem itself and make sure that current costumers, either Xbox One or the newer versions, don’t leave the ecosystem for something else in the future, i just have a feeling they are not looking into this particular aspect quite well. Which is why i think their messaging has been abysmal in that front.

Lastly, i would hammer home about the fact that i think they REALLY should start talking about their hardware or showing it off to people and making sure that what it offers is truly worth it for many people across the board. That way it could destroy many concerns about the ecosystem and the multiplat strategy.

I also think, and some are gonna give me flank for this, that they really should make more games on the AA or even indie side of things. Because i just think AAA is just not suficient nowadays for the amount it takes to make games on that production level, also the fact that it did become oversaturated does not help matters in the long run. Heck i fear what AAAA is gonna look like.

I think what they’re doing now is fine. Their focus should be on the games and growing them. Content they say is king. It is the games that will draw the users in the end. Look at Avowed, they seem to be doing a good job promoting it.

If they follow the playbook, they used last gen then I’d be expecting them to save the hardware news for their June showcase. Just like they announced back compart they may announce that all series X/S games as well as the back compart games are now all Play Any Where maybe even show and announce the Xbox OS for devices. I just don’t think announcing anything hardware now will do much, it needs to be at the June showcase where they can re-ignite the Xbox hype.

As for the games I think there are a number in development some might be indie. There are still online games like 33 immortals and Towerborne. There’s probably so many games Xbox has some we know others we don’t. I think for now releasing a number of games that boosts the Xbox name is their focus.

so far everything that has either released or announced for other platforms has been games that were exclusive to Xbox/PC for varying months/years or is an IP that had been on multiple platforms previously. The real litmus test will be when new entries in the “core four” MS IP come out (Halo, Gears, Fable, Forza) if they will be announced as Xbox/PC only (at first) and left vague whether they come to other platforms/announced as timed exclusives or announced as fully multiplatform day one. Stuff like a Gears Collection or a UE5 remake of Halo 1 i would expect to be fully multiplatform day one as those are just “re-skinned” older games, but stuff like Fable/Gears E-Day/Halo 7/Forza 6/Motorsport 2 etc will be interesting to see

comes down to developer bandwidth as much as anything. if they’re in a good spot to do multiplat vs. not

There also stuff to consider for next gen as well as it will need some form of games for its launch as well kinda how Nintendo Switch 2 would do. My two cents.

I think we will see next year, for now i think we focus on games coming to xbox and such. Also they mentioned case-by-case so i do wonder if that will still be at play for a long while and if so do they have plans to substitute legacy pillars with other new ip in the works kinda like how playstation has done these past few years.

Nevertheless, no one should be concerned about anything unless for some reason Xbox prioritize other platforms instead of our nurturing its platform ecosystem. That’s not the case, but its good to have a cynical outlook no matter what given it is in some way uncharted waters and you never know if this works or not for current users.

April 2nd is perhaps the most important date.

Honestly speaking? Yeah pretty much. Its gonna tell us just how much ports Xbox prioritized for this new Nintendo 2. Now its not really as bad necessarily for casuals but it does speak do Xbox users in some ways if what i expect happens does in fact happen.

Regardless of what does end up occuring i do know this one thing? After this nintendo direct, Xbox higher ups main priorities have to be directed in numerous directions:

.towards their next gen hardware ambitions .making sure that the customer of Xbox still remains firmly in place .providing new day one gamepass games .new “exclusives”(Whether its timed or not i just don’t care to know at the moment) .rapid cloud improvements .More play anywhere titles. . Clearer message in regards to the xbox ecosystem and how it will play out in the long run as well as what to expect for it.

Those are the main draws i would think they would focus on especially after the direct cause i think they know that some fans are not gonna be pleased if what am hiting at does happen and it would be at their very best to make sure to remove that cloud as fast as humanely possible to avoid a 2013 situation.

I know we go back and forth about this a million times, but how do ports from 3rd party studios greatly effect Xbox’s own 1st party releases on their platform? You keep asking questions that are already answered and then making weird assumption based on things that don’t actually tie together at all. Playground isn’t busy porting to ps5, they got another studio to do it.
