At the end of the day people will keep buying Xboxes, I think to presume otherwise is a bit crazy. Is it possible they never manage to sell more than 30 million consoles per generation? Definitely, but with their investment in PC and the growth they have seen there definitely means people are still in the Xbox ecosystem, just using a different device (PC), or in some cases still on Xbox One. If Gamepass subs go down to 20 million maybe we can start asking questions, but until then I think it’s fair to say lot of people are still using Xbox hardware.
Nintendo has had a huge generation for sure, but if we look at the PS5, except for the US where they are slightly ahead, overall on a worldwide basis they are behind PS4, and it’s a trend that will get worse next gen; Xbox was just the earliest one to feel it unfortunately and they preferred adapting early instead of just holding on until it’s too late.
I also wouldn’t worry about libraries, they’ll definitely find a way to make it work for us and I can only imagine the government backlash (especially in EU) and class action lawsuits coming up if they’d make millions of gamers lose everything they’ve paid for.
Those things plus the immense depth of games available if they pull off the PC part of it. It would dwarf any console offering many times over.
If someone wants as many options and games as possible, there’s absolutely no sense in going in the direction of another console versus just going towards PC.
Is it bad do be cynical nor judgemental given Microsoft or in this case Satya’s track record? I don’t, especially if we got nothing really to show for it unless is gamepass related.
Also, i did apoligize if people did not felt the way i did. Made that rather clear when talking about it.
Also, consumers have a right to ask things if things can spiral out of control. In this, its worth it do atleast be observant.
Especially if their priority is more on ports than actual investments in the current ecosystem. So far its good but i am waiting to see what more news comes out this year.
Yeah, let’s see how Satya thinks he would sly away if that was the case. I would pay money to see that reaction of having to give millions or billions of money back becacuse of shortsightness.
If that were to happen i think i would more interested on future hardware, but we can only make guesses at this point as nothing really concrete has come out. I do want news or talks about it this year mostly to appease someone like me who is on a rather pessimist side of the equation and i can make a good decision out of the whole shebang.
That’s why I rolled my eyes when I heard that Satya quote about “redefining what it means to be an xbox fan” or something to that effect. Meaningless corpo platitude and nothing more.
Ever since the XBO fiasco they’ve been pretty shit at messaging, and I fully expect them to continue fumbling it next gen.
In any case I see nothing wrong with not being on board with this. Especially after the XBO gen. People have a right to be skeptical.
I always thought that Nadella should have said “consumer”, “gamer” or “player” instead of “fan” because using the word “fan” has a different meaning than the other three words.
Challenge for folks - what do you think the positives could be from this change? Like, put the bad (valid, but resulting in a negative outcome) points aside - what do you think could be a positive result from this new era?
As an Xbox consumer, more games and surprises for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Granted, Ninja Gaiden 4 was in the works since 2017 according to Phil Spencer but something like this because they continue to make so much more revenue and profit that we’ll get more games out of whatever percentage they put back into the Xbox division.
I think this should have the opposite effect. I see that previously the focus was on Game Pass, but after not achieving the expected results and spending a huge amount on publishers, sales became the focus to get a quick result. Consequently, Microsoft, in this new vision, should seek to maximize profits. After the novelty effect, Microsoft games will be like games from any other publisher. Smaller studios should not achieve as much sales success; even Bethesda had this problem before the acquisition. I believe that Microsoft will focus on large, profitable IPs. I just hope they don’t fire, but release these studios like they did with Toys for Bob and Tango. I know they will call me a pessimist, but it is quite realistic when we are talking about a gigantic company seeking better numbers.
Some games will be more positively perceived by those who were unable or unwilling to play previously.
Do you honestly believe there aren’t Capcom, SE, or Sega, KT, fans? Bioware fans (before the recent troubles), Larian fans? Obsidian fans? This viewpoint about there being no “fans” of third parties is simply… not true.
I’m not saying you don’t have the right to be skeptical or like where xbox is going. I don’t think anyone on this forum is.
Fewer studio closures. $300m games plus porting cost will give more chance to the game to be played by more players. Had Hifi Rush released day and date on PS it may had a different success.
I don’t care for SONY and not looking for silly platform holder wars. I just care about Xbox staying in the console game.
So I would like to see how much net profit Xbox makes. Higher margins record amounts of revenue, is what English football clubs and the Premier League love to push and promote when publishing their results.
A little deep dive shows very few English Premer League teams make any money despite all the talk of record revenue, new ways of making money, appealing to the streaming cloud crowd getting bigger in newer emerging markets and all the same talk we hear from Xbox fans
So what’s the actual Net Profit from the Xbox side within Microsoft?
Appreciate your balanced view on the podcast and acknowledging the concerns where genuine on hardware etc. I think for me if you could show how future compatibility will work as if every screen is an xbox then xbox games from our backlog should be playable on a PC etc (especially those pre play anywhere). I’m sure that they have this in the works and as someone who enjoys playing from the backlog I’d like this not to be limited by what screen I play on. I also think if we get OEM hardware this could lead to some interesting options. I think the discussion resurfaced as FH5 just seemed out of the blue although it’ll be good for them to prepare for FH6 on PS when it releases. “In a world” with limited or no exclusives anywhere then MS would be in a great position with how the ecosystem is set up and gamepass offering better value by including 3rd party titles and hopefully keep offering discounts and not just subscription only model.
Hope that makes sense not easy typing on phone lol
