Still would have preferred the whole kaboodle as a lot of games in my library are just not there. I have around 700 games and only about 50 are Play Anywhere. The way Jason Ronald is talking my entire library would be brought to handheld and any device I go with.
Imo, if they did do this most people will buy the handheld as it provides more ways to play and it’s affordable. I like to think that affordability has always been a huge factor in consoles, it’s likely why the One X, PS4pro and PS5pro don’t sell as well as Microsoft or Sony would want them to.
If they didn’t see a way to replace that revenue long term then they’d probably fold up shop, because it would mean they don’t think the market will change or that they can do better with other initiatives.
I still believe the big picture for them is being the top game publisher with the top game streaming service in what will eventually be a hardware agnostic market. That streaming service could underpin their sub-service (Game Pass) and other purchases through their store.
Even Playstation, or at least Jim Ryan, thinks cloud will be a major factor sometime between 2025 and 2035. They were making significant investments as of his testimony in the FTC trial. Someday they will have a PS App for streaming on any device when they see the winds shift in that direction.
I see some comments saying MS should confirm some games like GoW or Forza will remain exclusive, but in the current situation, what’s the point? it’s not like having a few games will save the console, specially as most people won’t believe it and still get Playstation, understandable.
I think some people isn’t fully aware of Xbox’s console situation, first couple years were good, but it’s struggling way too hard since then, specially this last year, and things are just going to get worse, Europe numbers specifically are tragic. Reached this point, anything that’s not going fully multiplatform looks like a terrible idea.
MS’s goal now has to focus on releasing more market bangers, they’ve had too many flops lately, and South of Midnight will be next, even Avowed is failing to hype up people, i don’t expect great numbers for it either, tho it’ll be way better than Compulsion’s game.
Fable will do great 100%, but Playground can’t be the only one creating monster hits. Luckily State of Decay 3 and next GoW with the new approach should do great too.
Personnal opinion but: At those prices, buying a Xbox over a pc or a steamdeck-like becomes hardly justifiable if they maintain paywall for online play
Why are we so gung-ho about the console. Steam doesn’t have a console, and they are doing well so much better than all 3 consoles. I think if they can get the full Xbox experience on PC and other devices, they will be fine. The console has a ceiling any way, even though people are touting PS5 sales as 65 million the official sell through number from Sony is 56 million while 65 million has shipped Business Data & Sales - Sony Interactive Entertainment and even then most games aren’t selling on PS5 breaking over a million is tough and seems to only happen when the game is hot like Elden Ring, COD or Hogworth’s.
I am waiting to see what higher ups will say in terms of what their plans will be for the current customers. Cause at this point in time? They failed miserably in messaging(Which has proven already its results in some ways) and this year they will need to try and regain some of that costumer trust back cause i think they need them more than someone like Satya thinks.
Phil Spencer said a long time ago that one of their goals was to expand the market as they considered the console space quite small.
To me I think their goal is something similar to smart phones. I think their idea is that their Xbox OS will be in every device carrying the Xbox experience as well as the user base. Somehow, I think we will see TVs in the next 5 or more years come with Xbox OS and run games natively. I think the competition and battle will from here be platform based and maybe OS based as well.
I’m just confused about Microsoft’s strategy. If they need more money for these games because of the rising development cost why not drop the day 1 gamepass feature and let Xbox gamers start buying Xbox 1st party games again.
It’s a false narrative pushed by people who don’t like or use the platform. Phil/Xbox has said repeatedly that Game Pass subscribers spend more on games than those who are not subbed.
Jesse I understand but Microsoft is also selling their games on platforms where Gamepass doesn’t exist. Why sell Halo, Gears and Forza on PlayStation and Nintendo when you can sell it to you loyal fanbase on Xbox.
Because that doesn’t give you growth. None of the consoles are growing, and making billions isn’t good enough. This thread has hundreds of posts explaining why every platform is shifting in various ways.
I feel it’s a valid question. As a consumer I of course love the idea of gamepass. However, business wise and current moves wouldn’t it make you consider to revamp gamepass if company direction is changing to revenue based on units sold.
