Something I’ve seen a lot online tonight is that there is now “no reason to buy an Xbox”. See here’s the thing, I want to play on a console which has:
Day one titles on a subscription service
A controller that’s actually comfortable to use (Dualsense triggers are horrible with my condition, and yes that’s with adaptive triggers turned off)
Digital refunds
FPS Boost
Backwards compatibility that includes updates to resolution and frame rate
Quick Resume (because some games inexplicably in this day and age don’t let you save at any point, looking at you Persona 5)
What do these people suggest I buy then? Not to dismiss their quality, but a Sony first party title once a year isn’t the be all and end all of video games,
I definitely agree with some of you that it was odd how it got announced for PS5 in that way. The one more thing thingy. Perhaps they just wanted an end to the rumors, which I can understand. Even though I do believe more sense would have been if they had at least released the game first on Xbox and PC and maybe then announce it. This doesn’t seem to be the way to get new people subbed to your service, but what do I know?
I wonder if it always was meant to be timed, I don’t believe we had any real concrete details on that. It does seem to me they are speeding things up and I bet next year will be no different. There’s also the much rumored PS5 Pro and I can see people with both systems maybe waiting for Spring next year. I’m definitely playing it on my X though, I don’t expect to buy a Pro this year.
TBH, I am not surprised about Indiana Jones going multiplat. I expect that was more of a Disney decision or something in the works before acquiring Bethesda. And you can’t really even classify it as an Xbox property anyway.
I think if you announce it like this it will keep PS5 gamers engaged/interested in the game through it’s release and up until launch, rather than announcing it at on a smaller stage at a later event.
This way, they keep up on previews, reviews etc and look forward to the game. It’s not a bad move if you want to move sw more than your worried about moving consoles.
A lot of people like to pretend that Sony 2018-20 is the norm and that your missing bangers every other month. But the reality is that the most played games are the same, you don’t really miss much anyways, PS has also invested lots in live service games, so their single player exclusive output is nothing to write about.
It feels like 3rd party games are all multiplatform these days, even timed exclusivity is dying out.
It basically ends up being 5-10 games over the period of a generation that end up being touted as great exclusives, it’s up to everyone to decide if that’s worth it vs gamepass giving games from 3 publishers day one.
Context is important because it was about the 4 games at the time. Technically he didn’t lie because it was hifi rush, pentiment, grounded, and sea of thieves.
I don’t fully agree with this approach, but I don’t think you can use it to dunk on him here
I am fine with all of this, but I think if the window of exclusivity is just 6 months. Then release the games day and date. I think there are a ton of risk making people wait 3-6 month becuase you miss out on hype cycle, and can’t maximize on sales. Plus, you run in the risk of game not meeting certain expectations which can cause people to wait for sale.
I think Microsoft should be confident about points youv’ve mentioned and make gamers decide if they want to pay $70 or have a gamepass sub to play the game. I think transparency should be key if they’re going this route and they need to create and empathize on benefits to get game on xbox/windows over Playstation
Maybe if we go back to the Bethesda roundtable where he said Legacy titles etc, but I think we’re way past that. At that point they had not really gone this new direction yet.
This is getting really tiring. I don’t think they are treating the console gamers less but perhaps they’re misunderstanding them. I think they believe pushing Game Pass with it’s perks is the right thing for console gamers, but the vocal console gamers still seem to be stuck in the traditional way.
Also Xbox is going to have to find a better way of messaging this multiplatform strategy as it seems at least today to have knocked the wind out of their event and one can only imagine that at the next Keighley event we could be going through this doom and gloom scenario again.
I think that is long gone, and going forward Bethesda games will be multiplat. I think the key for Microsoft going forward is figuring out a way to market benefits of playing game on Microsoft platform. I guess stuff like gamepass and getting 10% discount on DLC could be enticing to some. Plus, you can buy gamepass deluxe edition of games and get the DLC at a heavily discounted price.
I have no clue what regulations are, but they should maybe find a way to tie gamepass ultimate to DLC perks for their GaaS games. I think having stuff like discount on battle passes, giving away skins, and other perks could help bring eyes to Gamepass. All I know is Microsoft owns some of the biggest GaaS in the western market and should try to find a way to tie gamepass into taht and market it imo
Yeah, I think it’s the key for these moves, but the balancing act might be tricky to navigate. I am not that big of a fan of 3-6months exclusive and better off releasing on all intended platforms simultaneously. Microsoft should be able to sell benefits of gamepass and gaming on their ecosystem .
I’m a firm believer that missing out on hype cycles is a mistake because bulk of game purchases are during release window and early word of mouth. Indiana Jones will be an interesting test to see if they can hold onto hype cycle for 4-6 months and come close to projected sales if it were to launch day and date.
I do think they will have some exclusives but very few . As a way to at least entice consumers to try out at their ecosystem.
Higher ups would be off their rocker if they think that doing day and date stuff will play well within their own ecosystem.
I do not think that’s happening nor should it if you value competition.
Also can i say, there’s needs to be a better marketing and communication teams. Mostly because both are doing terrible at the job right now. But i guess the blame lies solely on the big suits over on Microsoft.
Indy is still in Game Pass, so I’m in. I don’t have time anymore to deal with social media, and just playing games without a care gave me my love for video games back.
Sometimes as a boss, you have to make tough decisions. Business changes quickly Microsoft Gaming as an Organization has to make money they can’t depend on the whole MS firm’s capital. Would people rather see more layoffs and more Xbox studio closures? Or see Indiana Jones stay a full exclusive at the price of those aforementioned things. To license a gigantic IP like Indiana Jones along with the expenses of producing a high-quality game like that is very pricey you don’t make games for the hell of it you do it to profit from it. When BethAsda made the deal I’m sure they accounted for sales for both Xbox and Playstation platforms in their Risk-Benefit Cost Analyst.
People let the illusion of Microsoft having Billion dollars to invest in its business lines with having money to waste on games that have insane budgets with no way to recoup and gain from it. Game Pass takes the pressure off some of that but not enough to cover the quality of the games the gaming community is demanding. So we will see more games going to more places.
Satya will see that Phil and his organization are self-sustaining and making a profit and give more money to MS Gaming to buy another huge publisher with bigger ips to make more money. Those who thought that Microsoft would buy Bethesda and ABK and make everything exclusive because Microsoft as a whole could afford to keep them afloat lied to themselves.
Microsoft Gaming is a new Organization even though Xbox has been around for over 20 years it never had this level of investment or accountability this is new to Phil. Things changed for him he used to be able to try to satisfy the community but now his main responsibility is to his teams, the shareholders, and then us.
He may not like some of the choices he has to make and I know it hurts him to have to let down the community but thats the price of being the Leader. Give them some time they made a lot of good reorganizational choices it just will take time to implement them That is why 2026 is the target by then we should see a huge difference in the next Xbox launch.
