Xbox Marketing Talk |OT|

Found an interesting article breaking down how an indie developer kept their booth costs for a relatively small sized booth down to 100k and said they easily could have been forced to pay 250 to 500k instead. The second link kind of gets into individual costs and such, but E3 price either way is 10 years old and labor and fuel costs are a lot higher. This also is for still fairly small exhibits, and a full sized publisher or platform holder would have a lot more space required than a small company. Also some of the lodging costs seem pretty low estimates.

I honestly couldn’t figure out how much space Microsoft was using when they still had a traditional booth area, but it’s easy to see that it likely was millions of dollars just in setup and space and incidentals, not including any of the cost of the actual content being shown and production costs. Add in expenses for a few hundred employees… Sure they’ll still be having some of those costs by having a physical show, but if they can eliminate having to set up play spaces and such, it likely will be quite a bit cheaper. Also, while they have naming rights on the theater, to the best of my understanding they don’t actually own it, just like with sports stadiums. They still have to pay to have events there, but maybe less than a comparable location.

And of course you are quick to post and comment (so “concerned”) about this. I didn’t see you posting anything about HFR’s success, wondering why? :phil_lmao:

i’m not interested in ps games

lol

I suspect that once XGS has some heavy hitters coming out, there will be marketing spend. It’s not justified yet.

It’s almost like they will do big marketing pushes for games that justify big marketing pushes.

i think the counter argument is that it is Bethesda doing the marketing and not specifically MS/Xbox as a whole

I don’t think it really matters at the end of the day, does it? The Xbox accounts have been doing a lot of posts for Redfall.

true it’s just the small little things people pick a part when it concerns MS marketing

I don’t think they’ll do it because it costs too much and they’ll get more return on their money with more targeted advertising.

I doubt Playstation has a presence either.

Yeah I doubt they’ll be there, PlayStation probably won’t be there either but with PS5s finally becoming easy to get you saw the hype ad Sony did for that, something you can bet Xbox won’t do for Series X other than an Xbox Wire article :man_facepalming:t3:

I also don’t believe in their marketing, something has to change, perhaps it’s time for new leadership, JA Allard and Peter Moore did far more with far less, imagine if they would’ve had the resources the current people have…

Oh look at that, haven’t been paying attention to gaming lately due to work but not surprised they’re gonna be there, but no worries we’ll get some Xbox Wire posts in a few days YAY!

Yeah, I just saw it today when someone else mentioned. I suppose when ur game has sold 10+ million copies in a couple months it’s hard not to reinvest some of that to try and push it further.

I can think of a much better use of over $6.5 Million USD than a single 30 second commercial air-time. [It was $6.5 Million USD for 30 seconds in 2022]. Let others waste their money.

Seamus Blackley said on the podcast yesterday that Sony is an entertainment company and MS is a software company, and that did kind of contribute to why Sony “gets it” more than MS.

I do think Starfield will get it’s due marketing campaign thanks to Bethesda though, after it’s upcoming stream I expect pre-orders will open and marketing will go hard. I also agree with Nick on the podcast who said he wonders if MS’s Hi-Fi Rush drop is them starting to “get it” as well (but again it was a Bethesda decision).

Well Starfield is the new IP from the makers of Skyrim and Fallout 4, Skyrim has likely sold 40-50 million copies by now and it’s a mainstream phenomenon and Fallout 4 is also likely in 30 million copies sold range as well, it’s gonna be Xbox’s biggest exclusive since Halo 3, a game that was an even in itself back in 2007 so it deserves a huge marketing budget, Starfield is the type of game you make a Super Bawl ad for.

Maybe this is why Microsoft should go after some outsiders who “get it”, perhaps people who have been involved in Nintendo’s and Playstation’s success over the years, JA Allard and Peter Moore clearly did an amazing job and set the Xbox division up for success and that they did successfully until Mattrick came and almost killed the division with his ideas at the start of last gen, a damage they still haven’t really recovered from, although MS is to blame for that because they didn’t do the investment necessary to recover until too late last gen, I think deep down I knew all those studios acquired in 2018 weren’t gonna be ready with big games until 5-6 years later.
