I agree but were the last few X0 events any good? All I remember is 2018 where they announced the Obsidian and InXile acquisitions. Other than that, I don’t remember anything about 2018 and excluding Everwild, 2019 for that matter.
TGA is boring only because it’s too fucking long. However, TGA 2021 is the best showcase I have had this generation. 10 games and 4 or 5 new game reveals. Rest sucked though. lol
The format was horrible, people just want trailers but it was full of terrible social media stuff and while i like Major Nelson the cuts to him and the other hosts are not what people want to see
The content just wasn’t there, back then the firsty party situation was the worst it had ever been
They have more than enough content in dev to make XOs a thing in the future and judging from their ‘E3’ showcases the last couple of years they seem to have understood that people just want games and trailers for these events so the format shouldnt be an issue either
Man 76 and fallout 4 don’t even look last gen sometimes. They look 360 gen to me. The FPS boost is nice but that game could really benefit from a high Rez texture pack or something
I don’t think you’re necessarily wrong, but X019 had the announcement of Everwild, Tell Me Why and Grounded, plus a big showing for Wasteland 3, and X018 had the acquisitions of inXile and Obsidian. That was decent for the time.
Also, X0 isn’t just the showcase, but it’s also the in-person event. And speaking from experience, the X019 in-person event was really fun and packed with stuff. Bleeding Edge, Minecraft Dungeons, Wasteland 3, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Halo: Reach on PC were all playable on the show floor, they had xCloud demo stations, there was a very popular merch store and they had panels and live streams on the main stage.
Maybe it would be different now post-Covid, but I would still go again in a heartbeat.
I think E3 should be focused going forward on games releasing within the next year plus maybe one new game tease or a tease and one reveal. XO can be turned into another fall E3 type of show where they show off things coming further along in the future and deep dive into what was teased or revealed at the E3 showcase. Throw in the other shows like Gamescom and the VGA’s plus I think they need a spring show or two throw in Direct style shows throughout the year. They are going to have so many games going forward they are going to need several shows to reveal them all.
Couldn’t agree more. Not sure where people forgot how much long-term projects shown at E3 turned out to be vaporware, massive disappointments, or multi-year presences before ever being released (No Man’s Sky, Last Guardian, etc.). I much prefer the 12 month showcase for E3 and potentially leaving moonshots for other shows; though I’d even say that can be problematic. I’d much rather the games industry be less secretive with publisher/dev roadmaps, and wait to show trailers until 18 months prior to release.
Personally, I don’t believe the 12 month idea stays next year. I believe it was done this year for one reason - Game Pass. Once Starfield and Redfall were delayed, Microsoft had to show what’s coming soon for Game Pass in order to keep people subscribed and if they can gain any new subscribers, then it would be a bonus. If 2023 is a 12 month plan then I hope for two things - first, announce it a few days before but also announce that the first 30 minutes or so will be for further out games and then “from this point forward” is all games for the next 12 months. With it being highly unlikely that Microsoft showcases AAA third party games anymore, if their showcases are like this past June which I do believe they will be because well, you can see it after the last three years then for me personally, my hype will be very low because as great as Indies are in general, they’re not for me and more importantly, that’s not what im expecting to see from Microsoft’s #1 showcase for the year.
Also, the June showcase is the big show, not X0 so having major reveals on this show instead of the main show seems like doing the opposite. Not only that but when you’re a few weeks away from The Game Awards which is far larger and you know Microsoft isn’t going to skip it.
June showcase, late August for Gamescom, late September for Tokyo Game Show and The Game Awards in December. That’s basically every quarter. All Microsoft really needs is an early February showcase to fill what is always an empty first half of the year for them until June. I don’t believe that they need all these other shows unless they become Sony and not attend them all.
One last thing, Microsoft should 100% do individual game showcases like Sony and Nintendo do. These are great and they work. And they start with whichever major AAA game releases first in 2023. My money is on Redfall.
We’ll see how it all plays out. Right now, they’ll be at Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show.
This I wouldn’t mind. Instead of a 12 month roadmap, make it 18 months and when they reveal a game for the first time, they show it with gameplay. In my mind, what Sony did with Horizon Zero Dawn back in 2015 is what I wish Microsoft and all publishers would do. Show a CGI/Cinematic trailer and then right into a 6-8 minute gameplay trailer and it only gets shown when it’s releasing within two years. This is my ideal scenario to be honest but it rarely happens.
Game dev is relatively unreliable as nobody knows what can and will push the timeline. Unlike movie industry where actors are essentially “booked”, so movies have schedules one way or another. In gaming you can just arbitrary delay the game and that’s it. Not to mention, gaming community is much more active and engaged in game development unlike movie industry.
The problem of talking about the project is that it creates the false expectations quite often. In movies it is much more difficult to achieve.
Just look at Avowed - people by default assumed that it is gonna be humongous RPG from Obsdian, rivalling Skyrim with ultra next gen graphics. Now we are debating its scope and graphics and Jez, for example, is trying to temper expectations.
Something similar was with movies in the past where there were some debates regarding usage of CGI though
this happened because they DIDNT talk about it . The only thing we have is Sponger leaks and what Jez has said about the game . Even the leaks compare the game to Skyrim . " You know how skyrim looks right ? now make it denser. Thats avowed " .
They are not ready to show gameplay ? Fine , talk what you are trying to do , show some art , character designs , talk about the people working on the project . You know the shit Jez saw regarding Inxile’s game ? Show that to us officially .
