Xbox Game Studios |OT9| How many games would a game studio make if a game studio could make games?

20/20 vision is the scientific (i think) term for perfect vision

I went through all five stages in the span of an hour yesterday, so right now I’m somewhere between depression and acceptance

I admit I did think it was a hoax at first so number 1 definitely happened lol. I quickly went to 5 though.

I thought it was just Redfall at first, which hurt (I’m a huge Arkane fan) but I wasn’t overly shocked. Then a minute or two later I realised it was Starfield as well and that was the real gut punch.

Cant say i went through the stages of grief over the delays themselves, I always thought starfield was 50/50 even with the hard release date, and redfall didnt have any gameplay other than those development leaks, so I accepted it rather well

What I did go through the 5 stages with was what this meant for the xbox brand having what could be a dry year, the usual reputation dip this news brings, and probably most was yet another case of xbox fans going over doom and gloom before letting the dust settle and move on, which seems to happen more often than not with xbox

like mr evil, id say im juggling between depression and acceptance, keeping my fingers crossed for a good showcase

Maybe its because im getting older , i just can’t bring myself to freak out over this kind of thing anymore. Shit happens in life and not everything will go the way you want it to. Sucks that its delayed, but the over dramatic sky is falling bullshit ive been seeing all over social media is eye rolling to say the least. Just play something else until the game comes out. There are hundreds of games out now and more to come up until these games are released.

agreed

i learned to keep away from message boards and twitter and the such and i feel much better for it. there is so much you can enjoy in the real world that this shit really doesnt mean anything

I think the problem with the “play your backlog” response is that it’s what we’ve all been doing since the start of the pandemic. We all want to play an exciting game on our new console that’s designed to fully encompass all the power inside of them.

We were promised new and exciting games but we still don’t have them, a lot of people have already finished Elden Ring and were looking forward to Starfield. if you want to play through the first party backlog its not going to take long to finish or drop the things you don’t enjoy.

sure there are indie games, but is Dead Cells really going to be that different on a base xbox one vs a Series X?

I know times are tough, but I think issue is its the same old story of maybe next year will be better. Those words are being echoed on reddit, twitter, and other places. I think major issue is not games being pushed back, but there’s no other announced stuff surrounding it which makes delays on Microsoft amplified compared to other publishers. It’s tiring saying it, but maybe next year they’ll get momentum with steady releases of games. Also everything is reasonable because it could possibly be 10+ months without a new major release.

It’s certainly tiring to hear, but it doesn’t change the reality of the situation. At the end of the day, people will only remember the end of a generation, not the beginning.

No real denial, I saw the thread and thought to myself “you got to be fucking kidding me…it was just too good to be true.”

The one thing however I just can’t seem to get past is the fact that Howard seemed so sure of it. So sure that they put the date on the huge screen. And in a interview again said he was very sure.

But ok, sure, that’s June, a lot can still happen to run into troubles and having to delay. But then in that interview with IGN which if my memory serves me well was near the end of the year…he pretty much said it was set in stone.

And even in early 2022 marketing material it had 11-11-22. I’m guessing Todd really was still planning to release but Phil Spencer saw the latest build and said they should take more time.

We’ll never know for sure but had it been Zenimax they probably would have dropped it.

The people who finished Elden Ring and were looking forward to Starfield wouldn’t have been playing it for another six months even if it stayed on track, so what would they have done in the meantime other than play other things? Yeah we were promised certain things but they didn’t pan out. Life works that way sometimes. MS started rebuilding their first party in 2018, we had a global pandemic that kept people working from home for a while and many studios weren’t prepared for that. Shit happens , it is what it is, etc. So many games out and coming down the pike that the notion of having "nothing to play " till Starfield doesn’t hold water.

I said yesterday that I think Todd allowed the marketing synergy to get the better of his judgment. Jason Schrier makes it clear that the game was always unlikely to meet the date, based on what devs told him, in good shape.

I did wonder what would have happened had Zenimax been its own thing. I do think one of the games would have been released due to the need to get cash flow in.

Yep, and probably with way more bugs in it too. I mean I didn’t have many issues with Fallout 4 but I read and saw tons of videos and comments of people with many issues.

That’s not to say I expect Starfield to be this super polished game right from launch, but i definitely believe way more polished than if they had forced it out.

I can guarantee that Starfield is not going to be free of bugs. Bethesda games are normally too complex with its AI systems etc to realistically expect to catch every bug.

I definitely think that if Bethesda had not been acquired, either Starfield or Redfall would still have come out this year, for better or worse. Probably Starfield.

I’m wondering if we’re going to see the official announcement of project Cobalt. So far it’s only been insiders with bits of info but nothing official.

InXile themselves have just said it’s their next big RPG, right? It was not them that said steampunk setting, first person, etc?

If Xbox only focuses on this and next year, then I don’t think we’ll see it announced.

I am not sure I have seen a situation where two games were delayed at the same time. Imagine being in the room where Phil and the team looked at the games and gave the ok to delay them.

I personally do not think it will be a good look to announce games that are too far out, when there are so many that we still have yet to see and play. It is best to focus up to 2023 in my opinion.

inXile have talked about their next big RPG, and I believe from job listings we know it’s first person. But the codename and it being steampunk come from Jez, so not official.

I’m expecting Cobalt to release in 2024 or 2025, so a CGI announcement trailer on June 12th is possible but unlikely in my opinion.

I think Project Midnight from Compulsion is more likely, as it’s probably 2023/2024.
