Xbox Game Studios |OT9| How many games would a game studio make if a game studio could make games?

Yup, all Microsoft has to do is have a good Showcase

I don’t think it is as easy as that, or they would have done it already. They are in the business much more than us.

No I agree.

It is easy for people on the sidelines to say planning should have been better, but rarely say how. Xbox cannot really make games faster, and quite frankly a delay for two of your biggest games is going to be devastating for any publisher and you cannot really plan around it.

Also, he talks about momentum after ABK but I struggle to see how you could maintain it through say Game Pass additions, because the only game remotely gettable and potentially move the needle was DL2, and we all saw how well that game sold.

Xbox is just going to have to muddle its way through the year and ensure Redfall and Starfield are ready to kick off 2023 in a big way.

If they did more moneyhats they would have less issue. They just don’t do them because their deals usually include GP Day 1 release and aside second echelon games, companies do not agree to put their big games there.

I think that still stems from the One generation, it would have been easier if they had a great previous generation, but in the end they are still working with what they can do realistically.

They could do more with bigger older games. That’s why I am curious about Sony’s service - Game Pass rarely get huge old release and Sony seems to be hell bent on getting a big back catalog.

That’s true. Their position on Game Pass Day 1 releases limits their options.

Microsoft should just continue acquiring more and maybe in the future there will be a critical mass of games

I’m sure the showcase will be brilliant, although they haven’t confirmed a runtime the 90 minute placeholder alludes to them having lots to show!

There’s no doubt that the leadership team already know they need to hit the show out of the park, with the recent lack of content.

I doubt we will see acquisitions but there’s definitely going to be GamePass day ones and third party deals for sure!

I personally think, and Xbox probably has the data that shows it, that day one releases move the needle way more than older games. The problem with getting bigger, older games is that by that very fact millions of people have already played it.

Well, that’s understandable that new releases drive the subscription. The problem is that if there no big release in Game Pass at all, putting there an older game is an option.

If xbox comes into this showcase and announces they bought absobo all will be forgiven

I struggle to think of a way they would’ve planned better for this year and be sure about it. It’s not like they can see into the future and know for sure when the games will release. This year they had planned STALKER 2, Starfield and Redfall were projected for 2022, and Forza Motorsport is probably projected for 2022, and supposedly Contraband was projected for 2022. That was their planning, most of the games just got delayed and that sucks.

There’s no backup for this because they didn start earlier like you said. If let’s say everything on 1st party fronts was started in 2017, this year might have some games that were dealyed from 2021.

“Microsoft has to announce studio purchases to get over this” No acquisition or partnership announcement that isn’t immediately tangible will fill the gap that Radfall and Starfield left. Big deals and third-party games at the Game Pass launch can alleviate this.

In fact you will get the opposite and people complaining that what is the point in buying these studios if we never see the fruits of it.

I mean hindsight is 20/20 so these discussions are not really productive. On one hand there are factors outside Xbox control like Covid delays or the war in Ukraine why we have seen less games released than anticipated on the whole gaming landscape. On the other hand i think in retrospect Xbox did a better job with Xbox One’s launch period. Not with their own games, but 3rd party deals at least quantity wise. We had Dead Rising, Ryse, Killer Instinct, Zoo Tycoon, D4 and Powerstar Golf at launch iirc. Xbox Publishing did a really good job with Flight Sim, Gears Tactics and Tell Me Why but thats it the last (almost) 2 years and no release since then. Maybe Xbox blew the budget on aquisitions, who knows. Or maybe there were more games planned to release and they come out this and next year. Maybe 2025 we can look back and evaluate this correctly. Right now there is some information missing.

Thankfully this time Indie games are better supported than Xbox One’s launch so they can often save the day/month.

How come buying studios will fill the gap for game delays

Bring heavy stuff on Gamepass is the only option

Depends where you think we are on the 5 stages of grief lol:

  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

Just a question, because I don’t get every English expression, but what does " Hindisght is 20/20" means ?

It means after something has happened you can look back on the past with more knowledge as to how things should have been done.

Basically means things are obvious/clear after an event occurs when you have full context and information that didn’t exist when decisions were behind made.
