Man I can’t wait until the ABK deal is finally done, because I really want to see who MS plans on getting next.

Rovio

I’m curious what they “plan” on getting vs what they end up getting due to opportunity and availability because not everyone they’d want would sell.

Bethesda and ABK weren’t particularly planned as far as we know.

Bethesda was planned (they were in the negotiations for a couple of years according to them) but ABK was not.

Rovio and Halfbrick together would be a blast to the early/mid 2010s lol.

Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, and Jetpack Joyride? Wild.

I don’t think there’s a strong need to buy into more mobile on a mass publisher scale, because post ABK they’ll have King (a huge mobile company), CoD Mobile / Warzone Mobile, the Blizzard mobile stuff, they already got that one mobile studio from Zenimax, and most importantly, they already have Minecraft. Once the acquisition is complete, this will catapault Microsoft to high up on the biggest mobile companies list, and they can look into leveraging existing IP more within the companies they’ll own.

From an analytic perspective, if they did want to keep going and thinking relatively big, I think the biggest things they could probably think about with the lowest regulatory scrutiny would be maybe something like Krafton (PubG mobile is very big, PubG is very big, and there’s a lot of secondary things that come along with this), or perhaps as big as Roblox (big on multiple platforms, would be a very easy pitch for “this is going to be treated like Minecraft again”). There’s no shortage of much, much smaller mobile players though if they just want extra mobile presense and companies to help leverage their IP with a bigger workforce. Then again… it’s also not that hard for them to spin up in house mobile games or hire external partners to work on their IP.

Obviously Take Two and EA are both big mobile players, but probably have the highest chance of triggering major regulatory hurdles.

Absolutely I wouldn’t be surprised if That’s No Moon develop a game in the vein of a Naughty Dog style game.

I doubt Skydance is for sale, however it seems anything can happen these days .

I think most of it will end being multiplatform, and thats not a bad thing, I agreed that final fantasy should become bigger and you cant do that by making it exclusive, just imagine how many players from xbox and cloud could be playing final fantasy 14 right now

I am not sure about the future of kingdom hearts and dragon quest tbh, is xbox interested in them if they will not own them? I think they are as long as they get to have them on gamepass

Then you have the niche games such as bravely default, octopath traveller, neo twewy, etc

Sure you can have some exclusives like let say, the next game on the nier series, parasite eve or a brand new AAA ips

I wish that they would go for something brand new but who knows, there is talent and I hope that xbox will publish one of their games or atleast be interested in publishing the titles from those new studios

It is not about FF14 but more about FF mainline. Sony and Square Enix did everything they could to make sure that FF IP is in decline. Their only saving grace is that there are not many big JRPGs there (with not-anime style graphics and a decent budget), otherwise FF would be dead outside MMO part. I am personally curious about FF16 sales and FF7R P2 sales. Will be interesting to see.

FF14 is MMO and I believe the community there is MMO community mainly rather than FF fans per se.

No idea. They would make those games for sure but I think that DQ and KH not being fully owned by SE, lowers their value a lot for Microsoft.

Square Enix by itself is not really good acquisition at all. Ideally I would prefer some deal between Square Enix and Microsoft. but SE is a greedy company that is also not good at management of their own games.

I don’t think that outside of FF14, Square Enix justifies its price tag.

Their next acquisition will be very interesting.

Why don’t MS acquire the studio who created the ori games, they are fantastic

Possibly too much nasty baggage at the top. Just search for the stories about it if you’re really interested in it.

That may be true but they are acquiring Activision…

Their head called Xbox cowards for not wanting to release their games multi platform.

[Signs deal 1st party, platform holder]

“WTF why aren’t they making their games multiplatform!”

It was unfortunate. Moon made one of my favorite games last gen and possibly Xbox’s best.

I mean, the multi platform thing was stupid, but this seemed like a much bigger issue:

And sure you can argue that Activision has problems as well, but for a small studio like this, where the team probably is primarily “valuable” to an acquisition because of the creative leads, etc. it is more an issue. Kotick and his team being kicked to the curb wouldn’t change the way the games are being led, but it would be a different story here.

Don’t think there will be more mobile acquisitions as Activision just overkills that, if it happens it will be in a package. They also seem to be moving from Tencent to their own studio Digital Legends for the new COD Mobile, King will likely be incentived to create new games.

Embracer released their financials today, SR did not meet their full expectations due to mixed reception, financially its on the track, but Volition will be made a subsidiary of Gearbox. They also mentioned that there are unnanounced projects made in collaboration with big companies which likely includes the Eidos Montreal Fable game alongside other games with XGS.
