One of the things that nobody talks (I guess?) in these acquisitions is that they change they dynamic between the companies It is less likely for Sony to get more attractive marketing deal if the gaming publisher is owned by third party. Big tech companies (or even Saudi) do not need that marketing money or any form of time exclusivity money.
After all gaming deals between the companies that involve tech giants or goverments might for example involve Azure deal, B2B deal and so on. In case of Sony - they cannot offer any of it.
So even acquisitions by the big third parties are beneficial for MSFT. But not for Sony.
By the way, does anyone have the longer edited version of this gif where gary oldman starts this scene talking to phil spencer? i can’t find it and it’s hilarious
I decided to redo my initial list and switch Bandai Namco with Capcom (after some serious reconsideration i think Capcom would be the better fit and they have more games that i like, even if I have to part ways with my beloved Tales of Franchise )
May i present to you my new and updated future of Microsoft Gaming (now with Capcom instead of Bandai Namco and some Studio switches between some of the publishers)
I think Capcom has already a pretty diverse portfolio, but i think that they could use more JRPG’s and i think it would not hurt them, if they would get (again) some western developers and diversify their Studio Locations.
I hope this was not to spammy for you, but after serious reconsideration i really think that Capcom (plus their newly added Studios) is a better fit than Bandai Namco and probably the easier acquisition.
The combination of SEGA and Capcom would propel them into a really unique position not only in Japan but also in the rest of the world.
Warner Media alone brings in over $8billion a Qtr in revenue.
That’s $32 Billion in revenue yearly.
Even if it was half of that it would be at $16 Billion yearly.
The COD franchise in it’s life’s entirety (since becoming part of Activision) has brought in $27 Billion in revenue. That means Warner Media alone has the potential to make more in 1 year than COD has in it’s lifetime.
I am not sure if it is a good example if the whole company (including gaming and movies) generated more revenue than a single IP…
ABK is absolutely amazing needle moving acquisition gaming wise. It gives Microsoft a huge stronghold in highly lucrative mobile market which is much more profitable than the whole WB.
What if they go for sega instead? Maybe they will want to make some competitive rts titles since they are interested on esports, or even since they want to have a part of the industry they could easily build new sega consoles, and then you have the other franchises such as virtua fighter, daytona, the new ip from creative assembly, etc
here everyone would like sega and capcom but in the end they will go for bandai namco or some smaller studio.
you have to think that bandai has too iconic and unique ip’s like naruto, dragonball, onepice, gundam, tekken, pacman, dark souls ip, ace combat ( which with the movie on ace combat will sell so much).
the thing I wouldn’t like about bandai namco is that they have little workforce among all its studios they will have no more than 1200 devolper out of 18000 employees in the group.
i too would prefer capcom and sega however i must admit that bandai namco makes more sense for gamepass service
let’s remember that from software with the recent investment wants to self-publish the games so bandai namco will lose a major slice of revenue in the near future.
Only 10% of the work force being involved in the desired industry is a good reason not to buy them. Majority of the money would go into entering industries that they don’t want even to be a part of.
I think Koei Tecmo is also an option, it’ll provide the diversity in ganes games but lacks the major IP/needle moving though.
That said, I don’t think that is 100% necessary. Look at the hype that Wo Long created as a new IP on Game Pass Day 1. Imagine if that, the EA Monster Hunter game, and the PS action/adventure game were all first party games.
Not the best buy, but if they are willing to accept I think Xbox would pull the trigger.
