Xbox Acquisition |OT6| If this is about competition, let us have competition

People buy a handful of games… like they bought a handful of CDs before music subscription services. Consumption habits change when content becomes readily available.

I’m not even talking streaming, I’m just saying plenty of people today in 2022 are buying XSX and XSS because of the service that Game Pass provides.

Can confirm this, at least here in Colombia. Gamepass WOM is big.

  1. Have you never played an AC game?

  2. That’s a very broad question that could be answered in a lot of ways.

Origin---->Valhalla.

Some would say AC Brotherhood—>AC Rogue.

AC unity and Syndicate started the rpg transformation of the series (though unity and syndicate felt different…at least to me)

Oh sh1t, on topic!! IF IF IIIIF Microsoft were to acquire netflix, they would get the studio that made Oxenfree and I would be extremelly happy with that

The last AC I played was Black Flag and even that one I did not finish.

Hope you enjoy them bro, hopefully infinite will help ac move from the same formula, if it is going to be a platform for several campaigns, then they could easily try new things instead of just making more open worlds

I think to be fair people talk about Assassin’s Creed repeating the same formula but you really can break the franchise down like this to multiple phases where there was quite a lot of differences between them in terms of gameplay. And it seems like we’ll be moving into something new with AC: Rift next year.

I never said otherwise, I just said the relationship would die and I would be real shocked if we still saw them on game pass

no, its always been the sports games. Even looking decades into the past even going back to the super nintendo or genesis. Battlefield is still on top, you can argue its quality but 2042 was still in the top 5 best sellin games of 2021 and while I might be mistaken I believe need for speed sales are fine

why would EA just sell some of their most profitable parts. Like respawn makes them bank (escpecially with stuff like apex), battlefield is still one of the biggest money makers in gaming and bioware fair enough (suprised EA hasn’t shut them down after they sat on their ass’s for like 4 years and crunched out anthem in like a year)

I never said anything about exclusivity, I was talking about the subscription model which is what Microsoft’s focus is. If Amazon bought EA for example I am 99% sure as soon as the EA play contract expired those sports games would never appear on game pass again

to their sub service, they would still be on xbox just not game pass anymore

why would EA do that, people are buying for these sports games every year which is $70 then buying the character pack things for ultimate team which probably racks in a fuck ton of money then by the end of the year its onto the next game the cycle repeats with them back at stage 1. I don’t like sports games unless its a party sports game like mario tennis but it makes complete business sense here because people spend the money

I guess making CoD exclusive would kill that IP now…same with the next elderscrolls, like people will follow where games like Fifa go but regardless I was talking sub services, I even said that

then should sony be competitve about what MS is offering, like unless you are trying to convince me Sony having 3rd party action adventure games which are heavily narrotive and have stealth elements are enough of a genre pull in to allow PS to dominate this argument completely falls apart, I am not trying to downplay ubisoft as they do attract the casuals (not the the same extreme as others like EA or T2 but still) but this argument feels flimsy to me

and same could be ask with stuff like FPSs with xbox which is one of if not the most popular genre in gaming yet PS has still dominated, the exclusives don’t matter. Also they do, they have studio’s which do that stuff like Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games and undead labs. The PS lead just shows how little exclusives matter unless your nintendo or planning to pull an insanely casual game from being multiplat like CoD

I was and have been talking about sub services this whole time

I hope Microsoft picks up Certain Affinity.

You could still buy them on Xbox so Xbox users would essentially lose nothing. Gamepass is a big priority for Microsoft now, but that is primarily for games they own with a few 3rd party titles sprinkled in. Not every game is going to be in gamepass as long as the titles are still coming to Xbox honestly who cares who owns them?

I fully think if Xbox wanted any part of EA those would be the parts to go after. Never said EA would piecemeal their studios and franchises off, but that Respawn, Bioware, Dice, and a few other IP are the only ones worth having. The sports games are not worth the money spent on them imho. The others can be made full Xbox exclusives while the sports games could not.

Nobody said anything bout COD being exclusive. Besides Xbox would own the license so they could do with it what they want VS paying NHL, NFL, NBA to borrow those licenses. Amazon would most likely have to pay those organizations for platform and sub exclusivity and there is no guarantee they would agree. Xbox would have to pay no one to make COD exclusive so that offsets any “losses” from PS and Nintendo the only two platforms it would not come to. Plus Gamepass is XBox, PC, and Cloud Stadia and Luna are either failed, failing, or barely on their feet yet in comparison.

The whole argument is moot though, because it is very unlikely that they purchase 2 of the 3 largest publishers. Ubisoft could be a possibility due to their low price and standing, but still unlikely. EA would probably 100% go to someone else. Let Amazon or Disney have them honestly. We don’t lose anything. Google or Amazon would end up shutting them down or selling them off after Stadia or Luna fail to attract any significant userbase.

Sorry I am not understanding your arguments here, or the former ones if I’m honest.

I think I understand your argument around Call of Duty exclusivity, so I will reply to that however IMO I think that it’s flawed.

If Xbox made Call of Duty exclusive to their platform (which they have clearly stated they aren’t going to do) it wouldn’t have anywhere near the same impact as Amazon or Google making FIFA/Madden exclusive to Luna/Stadia.

Firstly Xbox would own the IP outright so they wouldn’t have to worry about the NFL or FIFA etc. Not that they would let Amazon/Google make it exclusive anyway as they would loose a tonne of money, instead they would offer the license to someone else (like FIFA are currently doing).

Also instead of being restricted to a service paywalled behind a monthly/annual subscription (Amazon Prime/Luna), on Xbox it would still be available on PC, Xbox Consoles and Cloud (with GP optional), therefore it’s only PS4/PS5 which would be affected.

Anyway to bring it back on topic I was simply saying IMO Xbox should focus on acquiring first party content for genres they don’t really provide (which their competitors do) and I think Ubisoft does that in spades.

and you know, EA access bring in 80% of their gaming catalogue, also why would microsoft want games insanely popular with casuals to disappear off the service

so besides EA sports the most profitable parts of the company…it sounds like they would just buy EA

I really think people over value how much MS cares about exclusivity

it was me trying to show how dumb the idea that would kill the IP is

why is it unlikely?

except a lot of games and a ton of value from game pass considering EA access is a part of the service

I think these platforms will kill PS in the long run, like why wouldn’t amazon buy some publishers and use that to justify boosting the price of prime by $30 a year or something

it was literally just me pointing out how dumb the statement that it would kill the IP is

but that isn’t a hole, they have multiple studio’s doing open world games like Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs. We will just need to agree to disagree here because Ubisoft feels like one of the worst fits when it comes to veriety which you are kind of proving here by only focusing on holes they have against the competitors which sony only really makes those type of games anyway so it is forcing it to fit

When you are releasing sports games you need them out before the start of the season or else there is no point to release them at all. That’s a how the sales around sports games work. Not enough people are going to buy the brand new madden if its released every march for instance.

The same is true if you are wanting people to subscribe to gamepass because of your sports offerings. You need to have them into the service when they want them to get the most ROI on having it in a service. That currently does not happen.

The reason MS would buy EA would be because they want the sports titles in gamepass day one. The likelihood of that occurring if MS does not own EA is slim and if anyone else buys EA there is no guarantee that EA Play titles stay in Gamepass at all once the contract is done. Yes people would still be able to buy FIFA, madden, etc. through xbox store but they have a business built around subscriptions.

The amount of money it would take to put madden and FIFA/EA SportsClub into gamepass day one you might as well just buy EA at that point.

As what is going to make most fiscal sense to make gamepass work down the line. Keeping people on the hook month to month to your service for titles like COD, Madden, Fifa, F1, etc. that is gonna keep the lights on to allow for everything else. As when you have down years or dates get pushed for your longer projects you can always count only your annualized titles.

Yes I agree, suggesting Amazon could make all the EA sports titles exclusive to Luna is very dumb.

But it clearly is, they just don’t appeal to you so your trying to act like they are niche and not wanted.

If that was the case why do you think PlayStation specialise themselves around it? Coincidence that all their studios want to make the same style of games? No. They have specialists in strategy, marketing and data/business analysts telling them to do this.

If you look at their recent/upcoming games you have:

  • Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut
  • Spider-Man Remastered
  • The Last of us Part 2
  • The Last of us Part 1 Remastered
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection

If you look at Xbox’s 2021/22 exclusives I can’t think of a single exclusive that falls within those third person action/adventure games so how is that not a hole?

The Gunk and The Medium are the closest but they are timed exclusives and The Medium is now on PS.

I have provided evidence that Ubisoft have had top selling games every year,
they always have a minimum of one in the top 20, sometimes top 10 (often alongside PS titles) but again you disregard it as ‘niche’ - how a top selling game can be niche is beyond me, especially when you stamp your feet for other genres such as JRPG’s but Persona would never sell as many copies.

I have demonstrated they bring in money with Valhalla bringing in over 1 billion in its own.

I have also demonstrated that Ubisoft offer variety with:

  • 3rd person action adventures (AC, Immortals, Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs, Prince of Persia etc),
  • Shooters (FarCry 6 & Division)
  • Platformers (Rayman)
  • Family games (Rabbids & Child of Light)
  • Party games (Just Dance, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit)
  • Tactical shooters (R6 Siege & Ghost Recon)
  • Sports (Trials, Crew, Steep, Riders Republic & TrackMania)
  • Mobile ( Brawlhalla, Tom Clancy, Rabbids, Might & Magic, Idle Restaurant, Clash of Beasts)

But yes… let’s say they have no variety again too…

I agree to disagree with you as I’m done with your takes.

But xbox will still going to need to pay for the licences owners for having the games in gamepass no?

Thats a tricky situation atleast in my opinion, and at some point they are going to ask more for them just like it happened with fifa, still it will be a big win for xbox to have sports titles in gamepass because afterall, they have a longterm plan

But I guess they will take the same route as with forza

I am so ready to see project suerte

so you think it would still appear on game pass, that is what I have been refering too this whole time. Sub services not the console industry

telling them to starting pushing game as a service more? Like they are pushing for 10 by 2025 I believe it was because the block buster games aren’t making enough money

they also didn’t have a 3rd person shooter in that time, like they don’t need to pump them out every year. If FPS suddenly a whole because they won’t have one this or I believe next year, what about WRPG’s because I can’t think of any we are getting from MS this or last year

I literally never called it niche, I even checked to make sure I didn’t. All I said is it pretty much just fills that “hole” well

I find this ironic cos people were on my back because they thought I hated SEGA and now the same shit is happening with Ubisoft

these are either not caps or definitely not a secure fit though (I doubt a fifa fan is going to get hyped to play Riders Republic and the crew is a racing game so if we are counting them definitely not a hole) but…

fair with these though

I think it was fairly obvious I was refering to area’s MS was weak in but go off I guess

Stop tagging me please.

anyway I am really done with that convo, if you are curious here are a bunch of the xbox + publisher pieces. Feel free to check them out

they are all here Xbox acquisitions concepts promo art - #6 by WAHderfulGoldenStar and feel free to add your own
