Xbox Acquisition |OT| - So We’re Back to Making Lists, Huh?

I still don’t understand what you’re getting at. Do you think having the whole series of something as huge as Yakuza on Game Pass is some kind of small deal??? This is a terrible take.

And this little thing…

Ruthwik comment kind of made me come to a surprising realization. there is not one Sonic team game on Gamepass. The Valkyria Chronicles team was folded into sonic team. so that means there isnt a Puyo Puyo Tetris, Sonic or Valkyria Chronicles game on either Gamepass PC or Console. sorry to go off topic. carry on

People are losing sight of what “Invest” means in the context of what Phil and Sataya want to do. Microsoft has allegedly funded PSO New Genesis to a fairly decent degree already alongside hiring Relic for AOE4 and previously Creative Assembly for Halo Wars 2.

What I expect MS to do regarding Sega if they chose to get involved further is likely invest a pretty decent investment stake into the company, but not ownership level that would still give Sega the independence to continue building successful multiplat games in Japan and peruse a successful growth strategy but also secure that content for Microsoft’s ecosystem. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they do the same with other Japanese publishers Capcom, Square-Enix and/or Bandai Namco (Nintendo hold 1.9% in Square Enix, for example)

Acquisitions aren’t the be all and end all. Nor should they be because not every company wants to be bought out, but they sure appreciate the extra capital.

Does Microsoft do this in any business though? It’s been mentioned previously that Microsoft either does partnerships or straight up acquisitions. Investing into public companies is something they don’t really do.

Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but I don’t see it based on their track record.

At the same time, you could make the case that it is not because it didn’t happen before, that it can’t happen in the future. Who knows how many things did Game Pass change inside the company, and what they are ready to do to have more content.

If it was possible for MS to get Sega Europe I’d agree. Thing is buying Sega comes with a lot of Japanese studios and teams, IP like Persona, where the fanbase is PS based, IP like Sonic which is big on Nintendo platforms.

SEGA don’t have so much japanese studio, they only have RGG, Atlus and Sonic Team. If Microsoft buy them, it’s mostly for their occidental studio which are the money maker, Two point studio, Amplitude, Creative Assembly, Relic, Sport interactive… They all can work on valuable IP and fill the gap for PC centric game. Japanese studio would be icing on the cake

You’re right that it’s possible, I’ve already agreed to that, but we also can’t blindly assume it’s going to go that way either.

In the end, all I was saying is that if we’re going to be basing Paradox as the key publisher because they fill gaps and have worked with Xbox a long time, but then say SEGA/CAPCOM don’t fit in that category too, then are we just blindly following a rumor to the point we’re lying?

Like I get a publisher might not fit someone’s personal interests, but that doesn’t change history. Lol

I got it. You are concerned that you won’t get Persona on Playstation.

Fanbase exist until it isn’t. FF was Nintendo’s frachise before coming to Playstation, while Xenosaga was Sony’s franchise before coming to Nintendo. Street Fighter too, right?

The only problem is zero popularity of Xbox in Japan, but considering that games are coming out on PC it won’t be a problem.

Oh I agree with that, SEGA makes as much sense for an acquisition than Paradox. There have been many collaboration in the past and the present between them and MS.

I guess this explains why we don’t see any of the Sega IP being used. They basically have Yakuza studio, SMT studio, and Sonic studio. Kinda sad to see as an old school Sega fan.

It’s still a nightmare for MS to organise and incorporate. If and it’s a big if MS acquire another publisher, Paradox would be easier as everything is situated in NA and Europe. Making the whole process more smooth. This is what MS look for in a buy, the assimilation process needs to be as quick and easy as possible

Hmm I think you underestimate MS, it’s not a small company, if they have the opportunity to buy SEGA or whichever japanese publisher, they are going to buy it. Remember, Microsoft try to buy Nintendo and Square, they are not afraid of buying something because it’s far from NA. If SEGA want to be bought, MS is absolutely going to make a bid.

The only question is : which publisher want to be bought ? And I think we can’t answer it, every time we see a publisher getting bought it’s always a surprise, only some really acknowledge insider know it before like Schreier

There is nothing nightmarish for MS. They have 150k+ employees all over the world. And BTW they turned Bethesda into the own Xbox subsidiary so it won’t be a problem. Sega will go as their own publishing branch like Bethesda now. It is simple really.

I am more than sure that their new approach with studios - like XGS and Bethesda - will be applied to big purchases in the future. Basically something aking Xbox Gaming Federation.

Acquiring a major Japanese publisher is not simple. The customs, laws, logistics, management is very different to what’s in the NA and Europe. MS have no presence in Japan at all, Its a recipe for disaster and I really hope they stay away from any Japanese dev or publisher

They literally are getting a Japanese dev with Zenimax (Tango Gameworks).

I think you’re over estimating issues with Japan, honestly.

Microsoft has no presence in Japan? They have over 2.000 workers and offices there for over 30 years. They probably know how logistics and management work.
