Xbox Acquisition |OT| - So We’re Back to Making Lists, Huh?

That would be a dream acquisition. Having them and double fine and Rare under Xbox game studios would be amazing. We’d get creative unique games constantly

So I was just looking at the team behind Second Extinction (Systemic Reaction) and saw they are owned by Avalanche Studios Group who are a subsidary to Nordisk Film who are owned by Egmont Group. I noitced Egmont group are private and noticed this bit.

On 1 May 2020, Egmont completed the sale of three of its publishers (Egmont Books UK, Egmont Poland, and Schneiderbuch Germany) to HarperCollins).

They seem really cheap it would net them

  • Avalache Studios
  • Expansive Worlds AB
  • Systemic Reaction

They own/make;

  • Just Cause Series

  • The Hunter Series

  • Mad Max

  • Renegade ops

  • Generation Zero

  • Second Extinction

(They also helped id make Rage 2)

Just some more food for thought, I do realize companies with weird film/book publishing might not be on the cards because more work but it looks like they sold off some of their publishing arms so it’s what got me thinking.

Examples of studios I think fit into Xbox/Microsoft’s criteria of devs punching above their weight and holding potentially useful IPs (and aren’t huge like Bungie, etc):

  • Oddworld Inhabitants (Oddworld)
  • Otherside (working on System Shock 3, IP owned by an insurance firm iirc)
  • Studio MDHR (Cuphead)
  • Hello Games (No Man’s Sky, The Last Campfire)
  • Studio Wildcard (ARK, huge IP)
  • Tripwire Interactive (Killing Floor, Man Eater)
  • Neon Giant (The Ascent)
  • GSC Gameworld (STALKER)
  • White Owls (The Missing, The Good Life)
  • Ebb Software (SCORN)
  • Bloober Team (Medium, Layers, Observer)
  • Smilegate (Crossfire)
  • A44 (Ashen)
  • Playful (Super Lucky’s Tale)
  • Mediatonic (Fall Guys)
  • Playdead (INSIDE, LIMBO)
  • INT/NIGHT (As Dusk Falls).

studio mdhr ? man this studio gone afk lol

Tbh I’d not bet on studios that haven’t actually shipped a game yet. That would remove Neon Giant, GSC Gameworld, Ebb Software from the list. Hello Games is a really good bet tho, that would be amazing, NMS has had the biggest comeback in the industry and they keep releasing awesome updates for free and the game is on gamepass and the studio has already praised the service for getting millions of players. And looks like they have a knack for making different types of experiences as well. I think Xbox should definitely look into them.

Other that that, from that list, I’d say Playful is my pick.

GSC Gameworld shipped a game back in 2008 stalker 1

they are the same as undead labs

Hmm yeah. I thought GSC was formed later for some reason. I must be thinking of 4A which was built by ex-GSC gamedevs.

But yeah, I’d wait for Stalker 2 to come and then see if the acquisition is worthy. However, the Stalker IP is extremely powerful, and the recent trailer hit a million views much quicker than any other xbox game, some which haven’t even hit a million views yet. So for that alone, I think they can keep their eyes on it.

They take a long time on their content, like Playdead, just MDHR is more public about it. Lol

I’m not sure if MDHR wants to get acquired by Microsoft. Ffs Cuphead was funded by them yet it’s never been on gamepass.

I wouldn’t necessarily discount them.

No one will know better than the company working directly with them on their first game (which is Xbox).

They signed a lot of contracts for different forms of media. Could be a hold up.

Off-topic but still related to MS:

Yeah I’m aware, it’s crazy. I think it could be one way to grow the Xbox brand in Europe if they got GSC. They have a very big modding focus as well, just like Bethesda, which can help Xbox’s PC presence.

Techland, Bungie, Studio Wildcard (ARK) and Playtonic have been said to have been considered by Microsoft.

People have to remember that Microsoft/Xbox sees a lot more than we do behind the scenes during development and just in general at studios.

We might think it is too soon/late to grab a studio, but contrarily it might be perfect, especially if the price is low.
