Is it actual “criticism” to complain and blame Xbox anytime Sony does literally anything ?
The sad fact is a lot of people here desperately want Microsoft to have a complete monopoly on gaming and cannot handle Sony doing anything that is positive for their ecosystem.
Xbox made the single biggest move in gaming history 6 months ago and you’re complaining that they’re not “competing”? What reality are you talking about here.
Ppl often has misplaced advice for Xbox/MS and any other platform that isn’t dominating. They also often ignore things the platform leading in sales can do better. /shrugs
I’d say the big picture thing MS needs to do is surprise ppl, excite ppl and make bold moves because the effect of that stuff is to upend existing narratives/zeitgeist in the industry and shake up perceptions while also making everyone explore their imaginations wrt what MS might do next. The Bethesda deal absolutely was a good example of this, as was the XSX announcement, the XSS ‘announcement’ and even their recent E3 showcase focused on tons of exclusive games for 2021 that most had no idea was coming.
No reason they can’t do both imho. Invest in new IP as they are, bolster existing IP that they own which they are, rekindle excitement in lapsed Xbox fans by bringing back stuff like AW and KOTOR beyond just remasters, and also sign on big name 3P stuff for GP. Don’t get me wrong, they are well positioned to keep building momentum and that will grow significantly over the coming yrs, but getting ppl excited about the future and license to dream big also matters to the brand’s image. And beyond just focusing on ‘the brand’ of a trillion dollar company’s division, it materially connects to us getting the games many of us have long since wanted to see again.
Try reading posts before replying please. I said “MS should be making some of their own in this space.” I explained that context already in the rest of my post, which you ignored.
Oh, hello strawman argument…(srsly, what on Earth are you even talking about?!). Saying MS should compete more in this specific area is hardly anyone saying MS needs total control over the entire industry. Please engage with the points being put forward here in print.
Who is doing this and where are the examples? Sony has bought 5 studios this year and zero times has anyone afaik criticized Xbox for allowing them to make those moves. Hell, most ppl online even on the Xbox side are saying good job on Sony as those teams are good fits for them. And this is a scenario in this thread/topic where we dunno if Sony has even done anything at all. Again, you are tossing out strawman arguments.
Don’t disagree with you, but I think this is primarily driven by the fact that most of the games coming we haven’t really seen. Folks won’t be as excited about new IP when they don’t have anything to go by. There are still a ton of unknowns in the Xbox lineup even if they sound good on paper. When you bring back old stuff, u have emotions associated with previous games to drive engagement.
I think an InXile/Compulsion/IOI new IP could do the same thing as long as it’s announced when there is something to show.
I’m not going to go back and forth on this argument, but I still do believe that a lot of people want MS to just completely own gaming because anytime Sony does anything a vocal crowd gets really upset and wants Xbox to respond. It’s just console war nonsense.
I am hopeful that once we start to see games like Hellblade 2 and Avowed, people can remind themselves that this is entertainment not a corporate chess match.
Though I should probably keep the same optimism I have in yhe acquisition thread.
That is a real good point. There’s an adage in game dev that says something to the effect of ‘gamers don’t know what they want until they see it’, which kinda reflects what you are saying. It is easier to get excited for something if you have a good idea what it could be like as a baseline (hence sequels get more hype than new games a lot of the time). Ppl wanted FF7R because they loved the original and were imagining what it could be like wrt immersion with new hardware, for instance. I think wrt new IP, MS is actually doing really, really well from what we know. It’s just this other space that they are weak with imho.
Are you accusing me of ‘console war nonsense’ in this thread? Because your comment here sure gives that impression.
You say this as if there is no material relevance to what games we actually get to play on the consoles/ecosystems we have all invested countless dollars into over the yrs…ain’t got anything to do with pumping up corporate posturing and everything to do with gamers like us getting to play games we have hoped to see announced for many yrs. And yeah, Hellblade will be prominent wrt hype building and likely Avowed as well. Expecting the former at TGA’s and Avowed at a 20th Anniversary thing for Xbox if they do one (TGA’s for it too if not I think).
I’ll add that I actually think Hellblade will be a bigger deal than ppl think in exactly this area. I bet they show it at TGA’s and that it puts hype for GoW on its heels since thereafter every GoW gif or screen ppl post online will be met with a notably better looking Hellblade gif/screen. MS should be showing Forza Motorsport off before GT7 launches too imho, so that ppl can likewise see what a true next gen showcase racer looks like leading into the hype cycle for GT7.
I’m not directing anything at you. I’m saying anytime Sony does literally anything people are all of a sudden interested in Xbox countering. Its completely reactionary and not how business works, and when it’s constant over reaction to Sony making moves the only logical conclusion I can come to is people want to add to their list wars.
You responded to my point about monopolies first, I never said that’s what you wanted.
Who? Which ppl? If you are upset about how ppl behave on twitter or somewhere else, why is that relevant in a back 'n forth with ppl here? o.0
If it is ppl here, why not reply to ppl here and engage with what they actually said here?
It’s a larger issue within this community, constant reaction and demands that Xbox counter Sony.
Sony announces another Marvel game? Days of discourse that Xbox need a Marvel game or else they’ll lose market share. Sony is funding a timed exclusive KOTOR game? Xbox messed up and this is a black eye on them and they should have outbid Sony. Sony acquires a studio that was basically exclusive to them for years? Xbox is so slow with acquisitions they’re resting on their laurels.
This type of drivel is constant within this very community.
Yet, the one who is closest to that status is Playstation. I have no idea why anybody frames Playstation as some victim, where it is just doing positive things for their system.
Playstation in no way or sense has a monopoly on gaming.
Nobody is saying that or insinuating it.
Pretty much this says it all.
They why you accuse other people that they want Xbox to become a monopoly? Xbox is not only nowhere near that status - unlike Playstation that literally has 100% marketshare in some markets - they won’t even able to achieve it ever (for various reasons like Xbox has no ability to remove Playstation from any market).
Playstation competes in the same market (for now at least) as Xbox - or to be more precise Xbox is trying to compete - so the moves that Playstation does, they affect Xbox one way or another (and no, Switch is essentially a different market for now).
Saying that “Playstation is just doing something positive for their platform by moneyhatting FF16 / SH or whatever” is kinda odd stance, considering that Playstation is nowhere near being threatened by MS.
I think we can forget about bringing stuff like KOTOR or AW or any other IP that is not owned by MS. MS clearly stated that they don’t want to work on third party IPs. (Indiana Jones is the only one basically and even then I believe it was probably initiated by Bethesda rather than Microsoft).
Small but potentially important update:
Imagine if it were Tango…they did say they are working on their next game already. And if in partnership with Konami/Xbox, that might also align with Karak back in February saying he was hearing MS was going after IP deals with Konami.
I had no idea who this milie person was, so I checked into her tweets and this caught my eye:
…so she seemingly is in the know to some extent wrt Konami stuff.
He did not imply Xbox though no?
He said it was MS specifically at one point. Not in his tweet or the first time he and Matty discussed it, but later on a follow up Defining Duke he noted that.
