If Microsoft did not buy Bethesda, Xbox would look really bleak, considering that Sony could get Starfield exclusivity too.
Sony has no problem to bring back their legendary IPs (despite them being third party, they are strongly associated with Playstation), MS will have to rely on their own new IPs for that.
Sony was able to create new IPs last gen that became popular, then they got Marvel’s stuff and now they are coming back with legendary IPs exclusives (some of them are even from Xbox). Let’s see how Xbox will compete with that.
Before Bethesda’s acquisition I was at 50% / 50%. Not great, not terrible. After Bethesda’s acquisition for it became 65% / 35% as Xbox reached much better position, but still it is not enough. They need something more to reach 80% from me.
I would certainly buy Playstation out of interest if it was not that ugly. But it is so ugly that I don’t want to touch it until Slim or whatever edition comes. Well, at least edition that is nicer and smaller.
Being mainly internet lurker and considering that I live in Europe, my outlook at Xbox is kinda biased.
This is the wrong way to look at stuff like this. It isn’t the sales that matter, it is how the game’s presence/marketing impact the public image of the platform. MS has shown games like Minecraft at their E3’s in the past, which have outsold probably all of Sony’s first party content last gen combined, yet they know showing more Minecraft does not excite anyone.
Meanwhile, Shenmue and Last Guardian, two games that went from mainstream towards niche due to a lapse in info/dev/etc, were important parts of the legendary ‘E3 of Dreams’ that ppl still reference today. Nobody could even name any other E3 related announcements from 2015 I bet…bringing those IP back from the dead was enough to excite ppl and laser focus the spotlight on PS4 as a box full of potential to fulfill fanboys fantasies.
MS should not be allowing Sony to dip into IP long associated with Xbox and long held dear by Xbox fanbase as they have been. That just peels more and more Xbox fans away towards PS5. MS should be the one promoting stuff like KOTOR, AW (and AW2), etc. As well as moving into Sony’s PSX-associated catalogue of IP’s like Silent Hills, Metal Gear, etc. Not to sell console hw and not because those games are necessarily selling truck loads per se, but because of the impact it has on the public image of the Xbox brand.
The best way to keep ppl talking about your platform is to excite them and position them to let their imagination run wild with possibilities. What is dumb is that all it takes from MS here is $$. Kojima wants to do a novel, innovative new horror game already, he already has tons of pre-production work they did on Silent Hills, there is already super obvious ways to market/announce a project like that (i.e. with a TGA announcement/trailer+P.T. demo for Xbox), and Konami wants to do outsourcing with the IP again and could use some cash right now. This should be a no-brainer for MS. But then, so was publishing AW2 but MS opted not to outbid EPIC for that, so…/shrugs
Microsoft is focusing on games that actually matter. Sorry, The Elder Scrolls 6, Avowed, Starfield, Halo, Indiana Jones, Fable etc will do a lot more for “brand perception” than the possibility of a new Silent Hill game or a low budget remake of KOTOR.
The most annoying narrative I see among Xbox fans and is especially rampant in this community is the idea that Xbox is somehow to blame for Sony making moves. Xbox cannot possibly block every Sony move and they can’t possibly fund every single idea. How anyone can get mad at Xbox for possibly letting Kojima make another Playstation game and letting a 20 year old RPG be remade is beyond me. You have to see the forest through the trees and realize Sony is making these moves to keep the status quo.
Just watching Death Stranding, I was bored out of my mind. Thankfully, I skipped it. I agree that Kojima would be best suited to work on an established genre.
Sony is being extremely aggressive which is also extremely smart because it works. If they get a game that I want to play like Kena (which was great by the way) or Forspoken (which looks great), there’s no way im waiting to play them on Xbox when I own a PlayStation 5.
Microsoft needs to be much more aggressive than they’ve been but I don’t see it happening. They seem to care too much about reputation and whatnot. Every timed exclusive they’ve gone after are all Indies and AA titles. Stalker 2 is probably the biggest timed exclusive they’ve paid for and even then, three months? What’s even the point? It should be at least a year minimum. Of course, if it was me, I would pay GSC more money to make it fully exclusive but that’s just me.
Wow. Only Microsoft would sign someone to where they can still make games for the competition. SMH. If it was me, it’s an either/or deal. Not both. I don’t understand Microsoft letting Kojima work with Sony if they signed him. That makes zero sense and I can already see this being a Platinum Games/Scalebound/Nier Automata type situation where the game that releases on PlayStation gets critically praised and is actually great while Microsoft gets the short end of the stick. Will never understand why despite being aggressive at times, Microsoft never wants to fully commit to being well, assholes which considering what their competition is doing, I don’t know why they would want to play nice in any way, shape or form.
Yeah, it’s very fucking stupid. Don’t know why Microsoft would do that. You can already see how that’s going to play out. It’s almost like Microsoft is scared of saying “exclusive to Xbox OR stay with Sony”. SMH.
Pretty much this. Sony creates hype and captures mind share better than any company in this industry so yep, I agree with you.
Very well said and I agree. My friend who’s been a PS guy since 1995 loves Sony because he’s never had a problem with them, always gets what he prefers and even if a game he does want doesn’t happen, he’s always hyped because he knows the possibility is at the very least there where as with Microsoft (and Nintendo), he knows that he’s not getting what he wants.
Sony creates a lot of hype and even now, with all the rumors going around and them announcing Bluepoint acquisition, it gets their fanbase hyped despite the fact that they don’t have an exclusive until February. Sony are the masters of it and it works to near perfection for them.
Every games matter be it first party or third. Microsoft is still playing catch up and by Novemver hopefully it kickstarts with Horizon.
There is nothing indicating this game will be low budget and it even has Sony on board. Everyone was hyped for this and the moment Sony got their hands on it the tone here shift and “its not big or essential” anymore. Bunch of hubris that, its Star Wars and a remake of one of the recognized greatest games ever made. Was an xbox game only and synonymous with the brand and now its a timed ps5 game. Its a black eye regardless of xbox having fallout or elder scrolls which arent getting a game till half or near the end of the gen anyway. Promise that everytime some criticism of xbox comes over some stuff we dont gotta deflect with Zenimax or Game Pass. This doesnt either xbox from paying and doing these kind of stuff irrelevant of the stuff they have already done.
And yet we laugh at people saying that Bethesda’s games have never been great lol. It is the same thing basically.
All the time whatever Xbox does not do is being deflected by “but Game Pass”, “they bought Bethesda year ago” or promises of the greater future. I believe that if not for COVID, we would have much bigger difference in sales between Xbox and PS than right now.
It isn’t low budget remake of KOTOR. And even it were (again tho, it isn’t according to the studio’s parent company) that is besides the point. The announcement itself is what matters. Shenmue 3 was a big deal during the E3 of Dreams and up until it released and it was super low budget (and it showed). I’m not saying MS has done nothing in this area btw.
I am saying they need to do more in this specific space of trying to appeal to 360–>PS4 gamers whose default mindset is to get a PS5 when it is available. They should be doing stuff like funding a new Splinter Cell with IOI, a new Banjo Kazooie with Playtonic, AW2 with EPIC/Remedy, KOTOR 3 with Casey Hudson’s new team, a new Viva Pinata with Sumo Digital, Silent Hills with KojiPro, a Chrono Trigger remake with SE, finding ways to get HL 3 on Xbox if it gets made, etc. Not saying all of these, but they have cards to play with 1st party IP, 3rd party IP and IP that are presumed long dead but gamers have cried out for yr after yr that they are doing nothing with while the competition nabs some of those up. They should not only compete in areas Sony cannot, but also in areas where Sony is out-playing them.
Literally nowhere in my post did I say a single thing about blaming MS for Sony making any moves. I said Sony is making their ow moves and MS should be making some of their own in this space. They should be, ya know, actually competing here.
Does it only count when it is an old franchise? Microsoft seems more focused on new IP when it comes to their XGSP deals. They appear to have plenty of these sorts of deals in the works.
For years MS was chastised for not having new IP, now we getting new IP.
