Turn 10 and Forza Motorsport. What happened?

No worries, I can see how that came off that eat and I apologize. I didn’t think anything of that comment because there are plenty of games with troubling AI that I like. I can easily name a dozen off the top of my head lol. So I didn’t think that to be something necessarily negative. Also, I don’t think Forza is a subpar product. I think it’s a good game that’s held back by some choices and technical issues. It’s because I think it’s a good game that I’m frustrated by the areas that I think it falls short.

I personally have all settings/assists off or on simulation and use the Sport Rules. Iirc its 2 percent difference in credits, no big deal.

Yeah, i dont often use rewind. But its good to have in your back pocket.

Yea I would like more granular control of the main difficulty options. I’d like full car damage that impacts the car driving but not several of the other options that come with that.

Its T10 not living up their own reputation and their hype prior to release. T10 preached about how this game was built from the ground up to take advantage of the XSX, with a whole new engine built from the ground up. They released their trailers which looked amazing. T10 are one of the more technical studios at MS, and were seen by many as wizards, including myself.

What they released just didnt meet their hype and our expectations from a graphic point of view. Car sims have always been the yard stick for realism in graphics. PD and T10 were always going neck and neck for the crown. Along comes AC, which had some pretty cars, but gameplay sucked arse. I cannot play that shit.

A large number of the cars are old models going back to 360. Its jaring when you see them driving around on a stunning looking track. They dont have RT, they dont even have cube maps on them half the time. You just have this cut out of an old looking car in the middle of the screen. Its really disappointing.

Either T10 needed another 12 months to finish the game, or they think this is good enough. Either brings more questions.

Why would anyone want to tear down Xbox exclusives? I love the console. I just got banned on GAF for spending my time defending MS, Xbox, Phil and Starfield. Go check my posts, my name was In Cold Blood. See if im a hater. I posted a number of time about how I was so excited to see what T10 did with Forza. A whole new engine. Ine of the first engines that was built from the ground up to take advantage of XSX and DX12U. Mesh Shaders, Sampler Feedback Streaming, XVA, VRS etc. Knowing what they did on the Xbox One, and the 6 years building the game from the ground up, they were going to set the bat for what is possible on these consoles. Well, we got FM8 at best. Somethings were actually worse than FM7.

How about, some people just expected more and it wasnt delivered?

Prove this.

Go have a look at the Holden VL Commodore on Forza MS. Its the same model that was used on Forza MS 4 on 360.

Im sure you will just come back with “well, they cant update all the cars” or “who even knows what that car is”, when you should say, yeah, its no good. T10 should do better.

They definitely do because to be frank you just have car scans and are future proof. But its not some type of gotcha, a scan is scan.

If the materials from the spectrometer reacted the same, then maybe, but they don’t so no idea why its a discussion.

I asked you to prove it. I’m not looking up a 360 game. And we’re veering in “lazy devs” territory here with some these comments.

I literally gave you a link to the video of it running on the X360, so all you have to do, if you have the game, is compare it to the one used in the new motorsport. Its the same model with the resolution bump from the 360 to the XSX. You asked for proof, I gave it to you. Your desire not to actually look at it is on you.

Do you think they should be using old car models? On a game they said was built from the ground up? Because the car model is so old its actually jarring to play with it.

Its a scan my guy…jesus.

Scan, polygons, textures and paint shaders and materials to be precise, all of which needs to be improved upon to make the car models look better.

Dude, its ok to say that Turn 10 didnt knock it out of the park with some of the cars graphics. It wont kill them, but what it will do is hopefully make T10 understand people want better.

The game is a mish mash of really high level things, and some average things. Why it is this way is the question. Did it come hot? If it still wasnt ready, then it would beg the question why? Did they have issues with the new engine? Did they really lose too much time to covid? Or, do Turn 10 think that this game is exactly what their goals were? If so, again, why?

They might have, if people are disappointed in the visual leap I get it, I don’t think the car models and materials specifically is the right battle to fight though (but that’s just my opinion). I will say though, I am shocked with how good the 360 version looked back in the day. I also agree Turn 10 should be better, I think they are outclassed by PlayGround at this point.

I’ll be honest, the more I play the more I disagree with this. But I definitely agree that there should have been ZERO returning car models for a game that was indeed built ground up in most other senses. These models undo so much of the hard work done in the other areas.

When I’m playing the game, I’m getting a better feeling of where all their hard work went into. Lots of great things in this game but the real star of the show are the tracks. Not only are the far more accurate than ever before and portrayed with an incredible amount of detail, they now sit within a fantastically executed time of day and weather systems.

Also, again, this “6 years” stuff isn’t true. As I’ve pointed out, they were early in production during the GDC 2020 talk. I would guess that most of that other time was spent helping PG and with the One X update for FM7.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s Forza Horizon 4 on a Xbox One.

Btw, the Holden Commodore was first introduces in FM6 on the Xbox One and was not in FM4 on 360:

I’ve yet to play a racing sim that doesn’t have examples of bad AI: usually that involves an AI car incapable of reversing after a car pileup, properly. Its also very easy to go to youtube and see examples of bad AI and physics in so many racing sims over the years too.

When I’m in a race the game is brilliant and I like having to react to crashes that happen up ahead of me very much like in GRID: Legends. GT7 is a great game but it’s so safe and doesn’t try to bring anything new to the table and really is the game that GT Sport should have been

Yes, those parts are very impressive and haven’t ceased to impress me. Regarding the use of older car models, I’d personally have preferred they didn’t do it, but then the issue becomes one of having much less cars at launch and I think the blowback would’ve been bigger if they did that, so it’s likely Turn 10 were caught between a rock and a hard place and simply chose one direction over the other.

I get the car model complaint however this really is the start of a GAAS, so they obviously can take the time to replace old car models and improve things.

The foundation is pretty perfect for me so I’m excited to see what they adjust and add to it over time.

The problem is that those garage games are becoming more and more costly in time of time and ressources to make. With each generation, the required time to model a car increases. The good news is that the GAAS formula suggests those cars will be updated over time.

I don’t think people want realism, I think they want beautiful baked in lighting with a focus on art direction. Real life is ugly all the time compared to what we see in movies/tv.
