I hate this stupid money hatting of games. It seems like such a waste of money. Ff15 sold like 75% of its copies on playstation. The jrpg community is on playstation and they aren’t going any where. So why even waste the money. All the talk about boycotting only makes it easier for sony to do shit like this because it makes the sales disparity even bigger. I hope the media rips sony up for this but realistically they wont. When Microsoft did it with tomb raider the media was all over Microsoft. I hope Microsoft keeps pushing gamepass and xcloud because I think xcloud is the real difference maker. If xcloud gets big then sony would have a hard time securing times exclusives
I wonder if third parties are going to be crafty, get that third party money from Sony, and then get that game pass money from Microsoft.
I find Xbox fans are a lot less vocal about timed exclusives, well till spiderman got locked out of their avengers, but that could be because Sony has screwed pc players too.
For me it depends on what Sony have nailed down, and the type of exclusivity they have hammered out.
THink I’ve said before I normally purchase all consoles day one, but with the next gen have heavily thought I’d just get the Series X initially, and then see what comes up from Sony before making a decision.
If they nail down the games I’m not really into like Final Fantasy or Street Fighter, DMC, then I won’t care if it’s full exclusive or timed as they just don’t resonate with me.
Depends on the game, and how long the exlcusivity runs for.
Trouble with Sony paid for exlusivity, is they nail down the devloper and publisher into complete radio silence NDA’s… See crash Bandicoot, Nier Automata etc
You’re never aware there is an xbox version dropping until a couple of weeks beforehand a year later.
I’ve always wondered why Microsoft says nothing as well in these circumstances. Is it to mantain a political relationship with their software partners?
@Jez - Do you know if MS knows in these instances that it’s been locked for a year, and the rationale about why they stay radio silent as well?
Yeah if the games went straight into gamepass on Xbox after their Sony exclusivity expired it wouldn’t be too bad. But it would depend on the games - if its a big multiplayer release like COD/BF/FIFA then that’s no good really because making it exclusive pushes a whole community towards PS5…but if its stuff more like DMC/SF/Titanfall - then sure I think most would just wait for them to hit gamepass.
I’m honestly expecting it to be smaller games like what we’ve seen tied up already, like ghostwire and deathloop? (could be wrong on its name) and I could see ff having timed exclusivity, it could just be ff7 part 2 or 16? I would honestly be mega surprised if it was games like cod or battlefield though. But I guess we will find out soon.
Been thinking about this today and I’m think that Xbox must have Sony a bit rattled with gamepass and xcloud. Because why would Sony bother reducing their profit margins to get these exclusive deals - if you take the console market as fairly static (and in terms of console hardware I don’t think its growing or if it is not much) and you say for a home under the TV console there are a max of 160M sales or thereabouts across a 5 or 6 year gen…we know Sony will take the majority of those regardless. So the gain with spending big on moneyhats is going to be relatively small - eating into the Xbox userbase a bit (Nintendo are just a different entity) - but lets say of the 60M or so Xbox sales Sony took half - thats 30M more consoles - but surely that isn’t worth the money it takes to buy these deals? Especially as many of those sales will be people who just want to play the one or two games and aren’t invested in your ecosystem. And I’d suggest those numbers are optimistic too.
A lot of you aren’t taking the cost of these deals into account games like GTA, COD, BF, and anything super AAA will cost Sony or MS hundreds of millions to secure even timed exclusivity. BF for example would be likely around half a billion dollars alone. (Deals usually cover all the expenses of development and some). COD and GTA would be in the billions to secure exclusivity. Nothing that big will be exclusive. Hell in early 2000s MS paid 50 mil just for timed DLC on GTA.
The more I think about it I could see Sony trying to corner the fighting game market. The new Street Fighter could def be one. I don’t know if it will be games like CoD or BF.
I feel if you like JRPGs or games from Asian studios be ready for a rough year or two. Khan might have info that there are western devs also but I don’t think it will be these huge AAA that bring billions in to the pubs. Can we see timed DLC thats possible but nothing as big as FFXVI where it will be a 1 year exclusive.
To add FFXVI is almost 100% timed exclusive at this point to PS5
This is why WB deal needs to happen for locking down NetherRealm for one, but also revive KI as a tentpole franchise moving forward. My hope isn’t that MK should become exclusive, but that it disallows Sony from making exclusivity deals with these companies.
Yes @Zappy5, Sony is in this mode because of GamePass and its reach as PS Studios start getting their big titles ready… Once those start releasing you won’t see as many of those exclusives as you once did. Sony is biding time.
It’s smart on their part because gamepass has potential growth that Sony can’t match at this point in time.
I hate these business practices. Sadly, if these are popular franchises, they will still sell well once the timed exclusivity is over and the game reaches other platforms. I would love for these types of deals to completely backfire by some type of mass boycott but we all know that won’t be the case. Company X will sell their copies on the exclusive platform, make money from the exclusivity deal, and then perform well when the game reaches the masses.
Sigh…
This right here! The problem is that Microsoft had numerous opportunities to do the same bullshit, and instead took the high road and instead invest in providing value to their customers without taking value away from their competitor’s customers. Sony continuing to act as they have is something that should be universally shunned and is so reminiscent of the PS2/PS3 Sony days.
Just wanna emphasize that MS has invested in OTHER platform libraries beyond their own too! Their Azure investments benefit Sony/PSX. Their investment in Cuphead did too. As did their investment(s) in Minecraft. They even reached out to Sony to help them with network security stuff a while back when they had issues there, and offered to help them sort out cross play.
To say nothing of DirectX, of course…
At the end of the day this was inevitable, most of their big first party studios won’t be shipping games until 2022 or even later at this point. I should imagine that after the first couple of years it’ll die down again for the most part.
It sucks but unfortunately companies will continue to do this as it does work, especially when you had the market share the previous gen and essentially want to repeat that for the PS5 gen.
I may just be one gamer, but Sony’s continued pushing of this practice is definitely going to keep me from buying a PS5 even to play their first party exclusives for a long time, and I may just skip their console altogether even though I have owned every single PlayStation to date.
If the Sony console warriors weren’t so blindly cheering for their box they should be upset too because (1) this does ZERO to actually give them anything that they wouldn’t have had already because we are talking about multiplatform games here and (2) the many millions of dollars that Sony is paying for this multiplatform gating crap could have been spent on funding some unique exclusive new content for the Sony platform instead of just punishing gamers on other platforms by not having access for some TBD time.
It also encourages microsoft to do the same. I’m at the point where if microsoft straight up locked down call of duty (a franchise I don’t care about either way) I’d honestly find it funny. You can only push someone so far.
Gotta say, my decision to not buy a ps5 is looking more and more justified every day.
Really dont see it as much of a selling point if its only exclusive for “a little while”
If sony do some big timed exclusive I hope MS does an even bigger one, because this will show sony that they are instigating a battle they cant win.
This narrative developing from resetera insiders than Xbox are trying to do these same deals as Sony but can’t afford them…does anyone really believe that? Microsoft surely aren’t bothered by big AAA timed exclusives but more about getting stuff into gamepass. I feel it’s a deliberate tactic to make it seem like Sony are just the same as MS personally…having reflected on it. If MS really wanted to go down that route they have more resources than Sony…but it also wouldn’t fit at all with their strategy.
I wouldn’t believe any of this and best not to spread it on here.
