The Game Awards 2023 |

It’s not a bad look at all, plenty of excellent “big games” weren’t even nominated.

Making a game targeting Awards is what Sony does for a decade. They were not very succesful this year either.

Awards are an epiphenomene, the 12 millions of players of Starfield are not.

The game certainly is great however I do think if it was built from the ground for the series consoles it might have looked so much different. I compare Bethesda to the likes of ROCKSTAR with the way they push the consoles only thing is Bethesda were not under Microsoft and so the funding was nowhere near what might have been needed. Now I imagine their next game TESO might be a spectacle to behold as I doubt Microsoft would spare any expenses.

This game was in the making for years, it has also to support the S and the PC. I do not get your critic. The game is not like that because a choice of platforms, it was like that because of Creation Engine 2.0, which in fact has made priorities on many things that may or may not be visible for the casual market and reviewers.

Mh visuals never looked good. Ill have to wait on switch 2 specs before considering that.

Maybe DD2 spoiled us on fidelity and art style.

Yeah, same here. The monsters especially had this Rise look to them as in not super detailed while MHW monsters still look great. When it comes to visuals I expected a lot more from a brand new mainline MH game for current gen.

Fun fact: Fallout 4 didn’t win any either, still a great and hugely successful game :man_shrugging:

I think Bethesda games are in a tricky spot because what they do so so well isn’t really something that they specifically give out awards for. They don’t have the strongest stories, they don’t have the strongest set of RPG mechanics or whatever else that fits neatly into award categories - but when you combine all these elements and the incredible open worlds they make some incredible games.

It is quite clear that Starfield didn’t meet expectations and it is behind some other big RPGs in many aspects which Bethesda absolutely needs to address, it wouldn’t be to chase awards but because they have to do it, simple as that and oh boy if ES6 doesn’t meet expectations and is Starfield 2.0 that will be indefensible.

Also if other studios like CDPR, Larian and Fromsoft can make some of the best games of all time in the last decade then zero excuses for Bethesda not to be able to do a game on that level by 2027/28, Starfield should’ve been that :man_shrugging:t3:

Just improve upon some of the things they already do is all I’m asking, Skyrim has some of the best exploration in a game still to this day, can they make this even better in ES6? Why not? Bethesda should be capable of this, can they improve on AI, gameplay, animations and writing? They should be able to to IMO. Is Bethesda not capable of this? Because I respect them enough to still think they are capable of this, if we exclude the other studios from Zenimax Bethesda alone with Elder Scrolls and Fallout would have still costed a few billion dollars, a studio like that should be able to make another generational hit like Skyrim :man_shrugging:t3:

Monster Hunter Wilds looks to me like it was designed for Nintendo’s next console and is it using RE Engine? I didn’t see that logo in the trailer which makes me believe that it isn’t.

This doesn’t really mean anything though. I thought Starfield was an incredible game and I’m continuously baffled by people who expected Bethesda to make a non-Bethesda game. CDPR and Larian made completely types of games. Comparing them makes no sense.

The irony is that they did all of these things with Starfield (Ok, maybe not the AI so much ). The problem is that you have no idea what you actually want, so if ES6 comes out and doesn’t have gameplay features that fit into your nebulous box of desires, the game will be a “failure”? Bethesda is going to make their game the way they want to make it and I have no doubt they’ll go bigger and better than what they did with Skyrim. The improvements they made to the Creation Engine should help facilitate all of that.

I just find this pre-dooming about Elder Scrolls to be incredibly weird and it seems to be based on Game Awards, which is even weirder to me.

It’s fine to have complaints or criticisms of Starfield.

Saying that it didn’t win GOTY so therefore Bethesda needs to do a No Man’s Sky style reinvention from the ground up is silly talk. Plenty of people love the game that it already is.

Yeah, agreed. Was talking to a guy at work who plays on PS about how much I loved the game, and he was like but I thought it had all sorts of issues, and I’m like I’ve only run into a couple and nothing more than any other game has, it’s just a joy to play it, and he was like yeah I guess stuff gets overblown sometimes.

I’m not saying there aren’t things that could be better, but this game was great as it is. It is the best Bethesda game I’ve ever played to date

Your entire premise is that Bethesda needs to make ES6 one of the best games ever made and that anything less would be unacceptable.

Todd and his team have iterated on every single game that they’ve made. Not everyone is going to like those changes, but it’s impossible to please everyone. I too want them to go balls out and blow everyone away, but I’m also ok if that doesn’t happen and they just make a really good Elder Scrolls game that’s fun.

I just find the “Game needs to be xyz or else it’s a disappointment” narratives to be utterly ridiculous and incredibly toxic. This applies to every game, btw.

Anyway, I’ll get off my high horse.

Outer Worlds 2 may satisfy the needs of a more linear scifi game.

Anyway, we will have both.

Exclusivity is a weird thing.

Moon Studios would still be Xbox affiliated, everybody would be talking about No Rest for the Wicked.

is that game launching on gamepass?

Wonder what changes Geoff will make next year.

I don’t see much changing but hopefully he cuts out the celeb promos or atleast make them shorter haha.

I find there’s a double edge sword to all of that. I think celebs influence the value of ad placement that funds the show. I just think he needs to make their involvement. If they could limit celeb involvement then I would change celeb presenters to veterans of the industry. I think it would be much cooler to receive an award from Reggie than Anthony Mackie. I think little things like that could help improve the show, but unsure what influence alot of the ads and celebs have in funding the show
