The Game Awards 2023 |

I still want to know how they classified Sifu as a fighting game.

Did he also talk about the CSGO/CS2 coach that only coached 2 matches and is nominated for coach of the year ?

It has hand-to-hand combat.

Not sure if youā€™re joking about it or being serious (as in you agree with that reason by them), but I rather not go back and argue about that.

Lethal Company has over 100k concurrent users on steam and is nowhere to be found at the Game Awards, lol.

Iā€™m going to assume no one asked about Destiny 2 in community award.

yeah not wasting my 2 seconds of my life to googling wtf is that game.

Going to play Devilā€™s Advocate to your Devilā€™s Advocate to yourself :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: (which I think is a pretty good point):

While that number seems large, it could become meaningless if there isnā€™t a lot of diversity in it. If most of them are console gamers, have a shared preference for certain genres, views the industry from the lens of an critic than a participant (how many of them stream, or view live streams, or play online games, or speak to developers, understand games development, speak to genre experts, or attend or participate eSports competitions, etc) then that larger number represents a monolith rather than a diverse crowd of perspectives that represent debate and a well-rounded and informed view.

A more varied group of people from all aspects of the industry, not just critics, would shine a better light than a whole bunch of videogame critics that focus mostly on console/PC games that grew up playing console games.

Most of the gaming zeitgeist is shaped by these people. And it actually creates a lot of ignorance among us. For example I wonder how many here know that every year there are arcade-only racing games made that never appear on any platform. This also true with VR games. Arcade game coverage is extremely light on sites like IGN. So itā€™s not only the mobile games industry thatā€™s being ignored by these big sites. There are arcade Expos in the US and you donā€™t see anyone from those sites doing any coverage of those events. But you do see YouTubers doing it. Which bring me to a point in regards to a solution.

Iā€™ve been thinking about the lack of expertise represented by their nominations over the past many years and I was thinking about solutions.

IMO the solution is to seek subject matter experts on each topic.

I was thinking if someone else were to attempt to create a universally lauded videogame awards that if they went this route, it would benefit the industry greatly and provide a lot of value to the audience.

On top of getting subject matter experts, nominate more games. A list of 10 games in a genre may seem like a lot but it will shine an important light on AA and indie games in each of these genres. The reality is that we are seeing way more games developed now than ever. Secondly, many of these genres feature a good number of sub-genres, and a larger pool of nominations represent the variety in each genre.

It benefits players because they can see that thereā€™s more to gaming and their favorite genres than the AAA games that are already overexposed.

So, for example, if weā€™re talking about racing games then you would seek subject matter experts like the website GTPlanet (they cover everything racing), racing-specific YouTubers, sim-racing channels, and even YouTubers that cover arcade games or mobile games. Their lists could be shared and discussed and all these parties could try out the various suggestions for nominees. The various racing YouTubers and folks at GTPlanet who perhaps never tried the arcade game ā€œMotoGP VRā€, suggested by the arcade-centric YouTube channel.

And then they end up with a list of 10 racers spanning multiple sub-genres (arcade-racers, arcade cabinet racers, kart, sim, simcade, mobile, VR, indie) giving people a picture of the best racers released in the last year. Games worthy of recognition regardless of device itā€™s played on. It becomes a celebration of the genre.

And when presenting it, speak to what makes a good racer. The fact that each race tells a story between fighters pushing their vehicles and themselves to their limits, relying on their knowledge and experience of each track, fueled by the desire to simply be ahead of everyone else, all the while riding on the adrenaline that comes from knowing that one mistake ends your story. That great racing games make you feel these emotions no matter what the setting or level of realism.

When you present it like that, youā€™re telling people who arenā€™t into racers why they should check out this genre.

On top of that, I think they should quickly speak to why each game was nominated. What critics and fans said about the game. What areas the game excels in.

With such a show covering all genres (and not combining themā€¦ ā€œBest strategy/sports gameā€ no more lol) it would definitely be a lengthy show. Easily 4 to 5 hours. So not a mass market product. But everyone would know that if a game was nominated or won a category that it is legit. It would be the most prestigious award for any game, pretty much.

It wouldnā€™t be a live event but it could have acceptance speeches. You wouldnā€™t have to worry about random kids jumping on stage too lol I could imagine people viewing or listening to it as if it was a podcast.

Anyways when I write lengthy posts like this it represents me thinking about these topics in the shower for far too long and then also not working on my own projects when I should be. Itā€™s called productive-procrastination or something like that. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

A few years ago, the major awards nomination for the Oscars was 100% white. After that they started to add a more diversify to their members. The TGA need to do the same thing. 120 members is not a big enough number. Iā€™m not saying this happened but letā€™s say someone wants to influence the nomination. They would only need to influence around 20 people and the voting would be totally bogus.

The vote for players voice is live and i have to say the list is from a different gaming year than mine, smh. Is there even a single indie game from 2023 there? Pathetic.

Makes me laugh that for all the outrage about Starfield absence from TGA game of the year category in the public vote category itā€™s currently 18th. Not even top ten.

I voted for it as itā€™s my game of the year.

This tells me that Xbox gamers on social media who have been raising a fuss about this simply donā€™t care about games at all and are just invested in some pointless online console war.

You can see from achievements how few have actually even completed the game.

Honestly I love Bethesda and I love Starfield. I donā€™t really care about media narratives. But if gamers are going to make a fuss at least genuinely care about these games and love these games rather than basically only being interested in a phoney online war!

Where are you seeing itā€™s 18th?

I plan to put in another 100 hours before I finish the main quest line. Iā€™m fully engrossed and planned to do pretty much everything I can in the game.

I donā€™t think this is a game where you can make a determination on how much people have played it based on ā€œbeating itā€.

Iā€™m the same way with the Forza Horizon series where I try to do most of everything else until I beat the main campaign showcase events. Iā€™m still playing through Forza Horizon 4 even though I have the ultimate edition for FH5.

There must be another way to measure how many people play and are engrossed in Starfield. I think seeing how many people hit level 50 would be a good one, because regardless of how they are tackling the game, you would be leveling up. And considering how conservative the game is in giving out XP, hitting 50 says a lot.

When I factor in what Alanah Pierce said, it sounds like thereā€™s going to be some sort of Sony presence there.

While Shinobi could be referring to GTA 6, theyā€™re also a big PlayStation fan so it could be something similar to what AP mentioned.

Hmm, I see. Probably Death Stranding 2, in which case I really couldnā€™t care less. Not too shocking either if itā€™s there.

Shinobi602 isnā€™t really about Xbox? I always thought he was enjoyed all three systems.
