The Game Awards 2023 |

The show format is such a mess:

  • Keighley’s cohost reading “The winner of 'best simulation/strategy is [insert title]” for grand total of 10 seconds
  • WORLD PREMIERE
  • commercial
  • live performance by a has-been band with no relation to video games

Rinse and repeat

Idk, it just gets on my nerves that this farcical show is supposed to be treated like a celebration of the past 12 months of gaming.

I was watching a video by YouTuber Fritanga and he says he’s glad TLOU2 remaster is not coming out sooner because he wouldn’t have put it past Geoff and his team to actually have that in the GOTY section.

And I agree, lol.

Well… that’s not a realistic joke. They’ll just create a new category for best remaster.

They’ve had that award in the past, but they weirdly removed it. I have no clue how that wasn’t a category this year. Plus, with the amount of remakes/remaster it should be a permanent category. It’s much better to have that category than esport categories

Would have been a really cool award to have actually, RE4R would have not been in GOTY category then, probably.

Best PC port would go to The Last of Us Part 1.

Yeah, it sucks they don’t have a category because games like dead space remake. system shock, like a dragon Ishin, metroid, and others needed recognition imo.

A serious awards show would not take place until February or March the following year….

But there is no Holiday Seasons in February or March. Why would they show biggest Ad of the year then?

The Game Awards are a joke.

Not that it means anything plus I’m on the Tullamore Dew. Star Wars Jedi Survivor is my game of 2023 so far.

I think that’s what he meant. It’s not “The Game Awards” when it’s more about ads and less about the “awards” part.

I still want to see that BG3 on Xbox ad though.

It’s probably a shadow drop, or very soon after. Some people believe it will be announced for Game Pass, but that I don’t see happening.

Yeah no way it drops on GP. Game will be coming off winning GOTY and all the hype, and then directly dropped on Xbox or at least open pre orders, a lot of people will be insta buying that, gonna be a lot of stonks for Larian.

I read a rumor that Keanu will be featured in Death Stranding 2. I can absolutely see them dropping a new trailer and release date at TGA. Not that I care at all, honestly I’m still surprised the game is getting a sequel.

I disagree the general public hardly knows of the show. Geoff talking views imo is strictly among gamers. People on the outside hardly know about this. It certainly didn’t show any relevance in acquisitions, or anything labelled in the general category. The only reason I think people even say the views are high is because Geoff says so, the reality doesn’t seem to support it. I’ll put it like this how many people know of the spectacles that happen at the TGA but something like the Will and Chris Rock spectacle is general knowledge.

Exactly the viewership for the Game awards is pretty much free on every media platform while the Oscars and other game awards are not hence the viewership. I’m sure the Oscars would have more live viewership if they were open to all the media streaming sites. Also, those other averages are better as they are targeted, and the viewer tends to retain more of the media consumed.

No kidding.

I was talking about general audience in video games, because a lot of people playing on Playstation, PC or Switch will be watching the show. Xbox events mainly attract people who already own the platform.

The only reason I think people even say the views are high is because Geoff says so, the reality doesn’t seem to support it.

When you talk about reality, do you mean your friends and work colleagues?

The general video game audience I can see but even at 103 million that is pretty small. I do think Xbox events attract the industry as whole as well. The 92 million views are pretty much a mix of the general audience. Reality as in reality I guess it’s just that the game awards don’t carry much weight, but I do see your point and yes, a lot in my circle have never heard of the game awards.

You forgot the random celebrity popping in the stage to promote the newest cash grab game about a famous movie franchise.

Bonus points if said celebrity treats the audience like a bunch of adoring fans who are mesmerized to see them.

I stopped supporting his show when he looked like someone told him his dog died when announcing the new xbox. I’ve always wondered why MS supports his shows…
