Yeah I really hate articles like that, a new expansion drops and a lot of people are playing it (no shit). But after a week or two and most have beaten it what will the player count be then?
It’s insane to say demon souls is better than oblivion . I understand DS got a remake, but let’s not do revisionist history to downplay oblivion . Plus, from was on path to make souls games imo. I feel it’s blatant with how many bait threads they make to downplay Bethesda and Starfield . I already know gamers are going to find a way to hate elder scrolls 6
I just have a thing to say to the people who think if Xbox keeps quality and consistency those miserable people will will change their stance and they will give Xbox their flowers or whatever… No. This won’t happen. In the 360 generation with all the great stuff from Xbox and at its peak, those people have had these same attitudes. I live somewhere that’s fairly Playstation dominated, and people were making fun and dismissing Xbox even back then when it was undeniably the dominant console and PS3 had so many issues. This is almost ideological. The people who are objective and who will change their views are very few, those miserable ones will only get more resistant and hateful as the other party grows bigger and better.
Oblivion was definitely better received. But I could see how someone might personally like DS more but like, objectively, Oblivion is the better game.
I am definitely a person who has changed my views over the years. Started with a Sega and a Gamegear, didn’t like the direction so I moved to the Nintendo with the 64/Gameboy. Enjoyed the change, saw what Sony was doing and grabbed a PS1 and also moved up to a Gamecube and PS2. Ignored Xbox for a bit till I visited family for a week and played Halo 1 on my cousins Xbox. Immediately begged my parents for one and was hooked. Played Halo on Xbox, played it on PC. Was a PC gamer for a bit till the 360 came out and traded my PC for it (I didn’t understand value of money really lol). Stayed pretty hard on my Xbox 360 for a long time. Ended up getting a PS3 later gen to play some of the games I missed out on. Eagerly awaited the next gen. (I had a Wii and Wii U mixed in there but I sold them both pretty quick, didn’t enjoy the output and the controllers I really did not enjoy). Moved back to PC for a while getting back into WoW and the such. Sat and watched the Xbox One press conference and said “WTF is this, I am done. See ya”. Ended up buying and enjoying a PS4 for a lot of the gen. Phil Spencer took over Xbox and slowly but surely earned good will. I bought a cheap One late gen when the games on PS4 started to slow down and played a few games that I like and lucked out and was able to trade in my Xbox plus a bit of cash to move onto the One X to play those multiplats a bit better and I kind of haven’t looked back since. I have mostly moved on from PC gaming as well and I still play my Switch. I haven’t really been brand loyal at all because brands don’t really deserve my loyalty. I will jump ship the moment you screw me around too much lol.
Right now I am an Xbox fan as I like the direction they are going and I like the value gamepass presents and Sony has been too shitty to its userbase for a while. That said that could change pretty quick too. Like if the games moving forward are more Redfall than Starfield (they won’t be) and Sony reverses some of their anti consumer moves than I am more than willing to move on.
Fanboyism is just wild to me. People who just latch onto their brand and take a beating no matter whats thrown their way is just wild to me. I can understand being invested into an ecosystem and maybe not wanting to move on (which is why I have usually been really against moving away from physical media) but like, people need to at least try and be objective.
I mean, I personally prefer Oblivion, but there’s nothing wrong with liking Demon’s Souls better and I’m sure a ton of people do. The thing is, there’s no point to the comparison other than a circle jerk.
Truth. The Xbox led all generation, Halo and Gears outsold uncharted 3:1 and all we heard was how terrible charging for online was.
Until 2013…when charging for online is ok.
Its a moving goalpost i don’t entertain anymore. As long as game pass keeps going up in usership and the acquisitions continue I don’t want to hear the word unsustainable again.
Agreed, but it was def bait and many weren’t rating the game but more that demon souls had a bigger impact due to starting a genre. That’s fair to say it’s more influential , but the thread was asking which was better
Which is weird because most people didn’t give a crap about that genre till Dark Souls 1. So it may have “started the genre” But Dark Souls 1 is the reason the genre grew and wasn’t some tiny niche.
Demon Souls was a bomb. Sony published in Japan and it crawled in sales. Atlus published outside of Japan and it got more sales based on word of mouth.
People who talk about Demon Souls like it’s even comparable to Oblivion are living in a revisionist fantasy.
Cyclonesweep is right, Dark Souls is what made the genre popular.
Oblivion is what really made Bethesdas genre popular. Morrowind sold pretty well but Oblivion more than doubled it. But even then, Bethesdas games have sold way more than any of the Souls games. I know thats not necessarily a sign of quality but it is something.
I had to look up what this poll was and it’s just asking what one you prefer, with the subject being that the game was born from Sony seeking an Oblivion rival.
I don’t think it’s a surprise that a forum of “core” gamers chose Demon’s Souls more and I definitely don’t think that it’s being chosen because Xbox owns Bethesda now lol. DS is probably “bigger” with “internet gamers” I think. Admittedly I didn’t read much of the actual posts because I don’t like to browse that site for too long.
I’d probably even chose DS myself because it has more preferable gameplay for me but it’s also a slightly dumb question because they aren’t even that comparable of games.
Someone posted that Dark Souls vs Skyrim would be a more interesting question because they launched very close together and both had huge impact.
They both had a huge impact in ways but like… the Dark Souls series, all 3 games hasn’t sold as much as just Skyrim. Skyrim has sold like 60 mill, the Dark Souls series 35.
Dark Souls kickstarted a genre, Skyrim is eternal.
Compared to Skyrim. You are rewriting history.
It’s kind of funny, Skyrim sold tremendously well, set the golden standard for open world design for many years, but nobody has ever directly copied its formula. Dark Souls had much more modest sales, but it’s inspired a TON of direct 1:1 copycats (The Surge, Code Vein, Lies of P etc.).
I think it’s because the Soulslike formula is far easier to copy.
BGS’s style is tougher. Closest I can think of is Outer Worlds and that game is constantly criticized for “not being Fallout” even though on UE4 it really couldn’t be.
It is weird. Sort of makes sense when you think about how much work and time a Bethesda type open world takes to create, but still, you’d think there would be some janky clone games. It’s like Bethesda is so in a league of their own that no one else even cares to try.
Have a look at this thread. If anyone wrote things like that about Sony on GAF they would be banned for console warring and trolling.
Anything to take the heat off the lack of info about TLOU Factions I guess. lol.
