Some years from now the toxic discourse around Starfield should be studied. I’ve never seen anything like it before in 30 + years of gaming.
If a new IP like Starfield can have that effect then I can’t wait to see what the reaction to Elder Scrolls 6 being exclusive is
Honestly, the Starfield discourse is why major publishers are risk averse . Why take risk on new IPs or take risk in design if you know gamers are super critical due to it not being something they’re used to.?
One of the publishers actually said in investment call that they will do more sequel or known franchise and do what’s easy to cater to general audience. That’s when you know you can’t do anything interesting anymore.
Edit: I got to say, the best thing that X has (ever) done is reader’s context.
Yeah, and gamers wonder why Ubisoft and others doesn’t stray from the formula. It’s because it works and if they do something new , then there’s a ton of risk due to how extra critical gamers are. I feel gamers and the media have themselves to blame when the complain about major publishers are creatively bankrupt. I just hope Microsoft still provides us the experiences they’ve given us like Hi Fi Rush, grounded , pentiment, flight simulator, age of empire, etc. those are risky ventures that other major publishers aren’t doing because they’re risk averse by nature
Game Pass is the guarantee for that. We Xbox gamers have very little to worry about in this matter I think.
Why is it even an issue even if it never reaches Skyrim’s heights to those people ?
Skyrim is just in a different echelon when it comes to gaming. It’s like top 5 in highest selling single player game of all time and arguably the most supported single player game of all time as well in terms of its modding community scene.
Comparison is truly the thief of joy sometimes.
Yeah, I think that’s the issue because the game is being compared to what many considered one of the greatest games of all time . I just feel whole discourse is weird because it’s clear that people who enjoy the game are really into it and others not so much. However, it feels this game is going to be scrutinized and it seems to be due to media and fans. I know Reddit is not the best place but you can’t even go into thread about update for the game to have people saying they dislike the game . It just feels like people who didn’t enjoy the game will move on
Skyrim is a special case, not one that will be easily reproduced. Would be like asking Mojang to make Minecraft 2 and expect the same amount or more sales as the original. Ain’t gonna happen!
It’s just a bunch people who hated Bethesda and Starfield not being the GOTG just emboldened them to sh#t on the game to confirm their bias. These are the same people who suddenly liked Cyberpunk after sh#tting on it for years. All in all, gamers are a bunch of man children that gets attached to things instead of moving on like a real adult.
Starfield is a game that people will still be talking about, arguing over, and most importantly, playing, a decade from now. Don’t listen to people who play the latest one-and-done 6 hour campaign du jour then never think about that game again try to fit it into their box.
I slightly care in that I want the game to perform well. Well enough to encourage Bethesda to continue new IPs with a single player focus (ok … maaaaaybe a little co-op could be allowed. )
Of course. Single player games do not require constant engagement. If a gamer plays Spider Man 2 for 20 hours and then quit the game because the game is finished (do not bother me that that the game is in fact 21hour long !) then nobody will say that SM2 has lost one gamer. So why for Starfield ?
The only thing I have noticed is that Twitter/X blogs and internet mags require constant engagement for existing. That is problably the main problem here.
The game had passed north of 10million in its first two months, this is - I think - considerably higher than Skyrim in the same duration of time. The only difference is that internet was not so glued to indicators at that time.
For comparison to Skyrim, it was at 10M in Decembre 2011
More importantly, the opening month exceeded Microsoft’s internal projections.
Thank you for posting this, I thought I entered some bizarro world where we didn’t see Starfield hit the seventh best-seller of the year… across all platforms… in a month.
I think you got it right there. After twitter (now X) started to pay content creators based on their engagement level, we see many more users posting the most wildest takes just to earn an extra cent as in the Gamespot’s post. Then Xbox related profiles reply to such content via twitter or youtube creating a vicious circle of hate/outrage. Honestly, it disgusts me. At the end, if we stopped checking or commenting under these threads and articles this would end immediately.
Lmao IGN did a video grading Xbox and PS5 this year, Xbox got a B and PS5 a C
The meltdown at neo is hilarious
