Even with those numbers, PC as a whole was only nearly half the player base of 11 million for Starfield. So while steam is revelant, Xbox first party games are doing better on Xbox than they’re doing on Steam.
People always forget that a huge part of those steam users has potato PC’s that could barely run(if at all) Starfield, let alone games like Baldurs Gate 3. They probably use it to play CS Go, which is very popular in developing countries( because it is not a demanding game).
While true that most PC’s on Steam are on the lower end.
I think Nvidia, AMD and Intels efforts with DLSS(2-3) , FSR(2-3) and XeSS, are allowing games that invest in the tech to run on lower end PC’s with more frequency case in point the Steamdeck and the games it can run when the tech and optimization is present. Starfield has gotten some good optimization options for anyone that doesn’t use mods too.
So even as tech advances what low end now won’t be left behind, and what’s high end now and mid range later would still hold up to the future high end.
Fair, but for now, even the low end gpu’s is expensive so there might be an entry barrier of price( for people who live in developing countries). Also steam deck (or any handheld that is not Nintendo) is still relatively niche rn. That will change in the future as you said, upscaling technology is evolving like DLSS.
I agree and that’s the trouble with modern gaming media . They’re so terrified of saying what they really think compared to what they fell they need to say to their audience to get likes and subs and make money.
I don’t like Xbox fans playing the victim card all the time mind. Xbox can do better with promoting its consoles and products.
Nowadays the series 3000, which are almost all pretty much more powerful than a Series X/PS5, counting the series 2000 too it must be around 50%+ of steam users, and if you compare to a Series S the number grows even more.
But yea, BG3 clearly hurt Starfield’s sales hard there, even if many steam users don’t have a PC to move it, the game still must be at around 10M sales only on Steam, it’s been one of these viral games that everybody talks about.
Also PC users aren’t as much about day 1 as console ones either, and the bad word of mouth Starfield has got didn’t help with sales there obviously
The bad press about Starfield players is also due to MS. Noone beside MS knows exactly the userbase on Xbox/PC, how much it sold, how much it was played before and now. So, people make stories about the only numbers they have, on Steam.
Look at FH5 and its player counter. We know it is arount 30+ millions and nobody dares to attack the success of the game. It is MS fault not to be transparent about Starfield numbers and see the resulting bad press.
We got a number of 11 million not to long ago, a concurrent number of 1 million across Xbox and PC and Nadella told us that nearly half of all players were on PC making Xbox the biggest platform for Starfield.
We also know Starfield sold well enough to out sell several games that dropped this year, and it’s currently sitting at number 9 best selling game this year.
We have gotten a lot of numbers, Microsoft doesn’t announce them all like with Forza Horizon 5 that we never got a 30 million players numbers for. That number has been generated by us from the estimate of the board being 10% behind, whenever they announced their actual numbers.
All of this information is used by Microsoft for investors and such, and people are trying to use a half assed version of it to make negative articles and get clicks or run with a narrative.
