The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

So much negativity in your post, pessimism and assumptions about things that we know are not happening and is a far cry from what they are announcing today to be honest.

I don’t know why you present so much confidence saying that when this industry has shown increasingly that things are changing, and there can be no assurances anymore about a status quo. It was said by some Sony would never do day and date on PC… (guess what?)

I think he improved 3rd party games situation and brought some positivity during xbox one gen. However, I feel he failed to deliver what matters most which are games. I enjoy xbox library, but during Phil’s run he hasn’t really produced memorable games with mass appeal. It’s been 10 years, but he just didn’t deliver on first party output imo compared to his predecessor, so I can see why people are down on him. I do feel service wise he has done a great job, but he hasn’t delivered in improving xbox as a global brand and first party output leaves more to be desired compared to the others, so I can see why people are down on Phil

10 years? That’s a lot. But I recall a report that before he only had to answer to Satya that he had to answer to someone else, and basically that guy was kinda holding him back. I read this on ResetEra quite a while ago if I’m not mistaken, there was something. And people were very happy when Phil got the new position where he didn’t have to answer to anyone except for Satya.

The other day I spoke to someone in YouTube comments and he said he hates to be that guy, but how come Sony did manage to have quality exclusives for PS5 early on and it took Xbox/Phil quite a while. My answer was that we shouldn’t forget covid, how it especially did a number on games such as Hellblade 2 and that these games were still in early development when the studios were acquired, some not even in development at all.

But Phil gets the blame, is that OK I wonder?

I mean, Redfall wasn’t exactly his fault. Just not an ideal situation at all, do you cancel it, do you have the team stay working on it and keep delaying it? Or if we go back to Halo, was that on Phil? I don’t know.

Hard to put blame on Phil when we don’t know the situation in terms of what budgets were like. From what we can tell, things were pretty light until they started acquisition spree in 2018.

The casual doesn’t know or care about the lingo they just want to play great games. I think Phil has done a lot but that has also set a big target on him, so when people see something, they don’t like they are quick to turn. These 4 games going over sets a precedent many don’t like and will continue eroding trust just look at Timdog a dude with decades of faith in Xbox mainly because of Phil. Perhaps it’s not a bad thing. Phil has to earn the respect of the fans not with his past, but the future and I don’t know if the latest move was a good one. People saying their Xbox fans not Phil’s are just demonstrating they don’t want the brand to fall.

It comes with the territory he gets the praise when everything is going great so it is expected he will get the blame when things go wrong. He took the fall for RedFall and that resulted in a shift so maybe fans going this way might provoke a change to delineate from this direction. If there is one thing he does is he listens.

I mainly mean the 1st party output, which he’s largely already solved (even if it took some time lol)

Watching the podcast, now I get what they meant being “surprised” that we remain in the site after they are “hating on Xbox.” I rather get the truth and reports, even if it’s not my liking. If this site report the brand is closing for good, so be it. I’ll sink with it.

But now through these 4 games going to other platforms he’s getting people questioning this as you can see in this topic. I guess even though they abated some fears they still didn’t fully convince their fans of the longevity of the brand. I think if they had talked about introducing an Xbox OS that would allow all your Xbox games to be playable on any device, that would have probably done the job. I like game Pass but there are many games on my library that aren’t playable on PC or anywhere else.

It’s tough because as a leader you’ll receive praises when it’s good and blamed when it’s bad. Phil’s tenure is tough to judge because service wise he provided one of the best services you can ask for as a consumer. However, in the 10 years span he hasn’t delivered on games imo. I enjoy xbox games, but the games outside of Forza Horizon haven’t reached mass appeal or are polarizing.

I am not saying he’s awful, but I don’t blame people if they’re down on his tenure at the moment. I don’t think results are where many have hoped for Microsoft in gaming during his tenure, and we’re living in a time where most releases will have chatter about if the game is multiplat or not.

Anyway, I feel a couple of releases this year will make people feel more positive about Phil and Xbox. I just think Microsoft worst enemy during his tenure was creating parasocial relationship among fans because when things go bad we see how people look at guys like Timdog, Peterovo and others as voices of the brand, and at the moment they’re hurting it. I think those guys reaction to everything is going to change how Phil and others interact with fans

Why should your criteria for games be the online discourse, mass appeal or people’s opinions? I can criticize Xbox first party for stuff but saying he hasn’t delivered on games is wild, dismissive and reductive. No different than the insane “doesn’t count” takes that fanboys lay whenever Xbox puts out good games but aren’t in the mold of that type of game they like.

Unfortunately, as of now the fans and community is what Xbox is. It is or seems like the fans are the ones marketing and building hype so I think it would be hard to pull from the fans until they get things like marketing down. I do agree to a point many fans voice frustration of sticking and waiting for the brand to produce results only to hear things like the 4 games going multiplat. I mean the fan anger got the CEO to come down and address the situation. Already I see on twitter talks of how Hell Divers is the Halo Killer having gained more concurrent numbers on Steam than any Xbox game. Even TimDog saying it must be a hex on Xbox. I also get the feeling that there is going to be a move now saying Sony did it right on how they went PC especially if their games start blowing up there. The thing could become people saying Xbox went first into DRM and that damaged their brand but built the Sony brand, then they went PC and the sales fell and now putting games on other consoles. One can see why many may not be happy with Phil. I just hope the upcoming Xbox games hit and do well, so they don’t end up having to look for profits from somewhere again.

He’s just addressing the question which is how many feels. Considering those that are leading this charge are the very influential gamers on Xbox. The Timdog hysteria was definitely big and covered by journalist some say even Geoff Keighley was in his Spaces trying to calm him down. Even now the vibe I see from many is disappointment especially on this forum.

I dont think many feels. It feels like people are being gaslit by reading twitter wars or some such nonesense.

The true dissapointment.

Oh, ok. I just thought it was weird that he said he enjoys Xbox games but then says Phil hasn’t delivered on games.

Anyway, so glad I’m not on gaming Twitter or follow gaming websites anymore I don’t even wanna know what it’s like. For the most part I think this forum is balanced. I think there’s some disappointment for sure but it’s definitely no Twitter hysteria. Disappointment, criticisms, it all should be fine and encouraged, but not insanity and toxicity.

Call it what you want but that’s just what I see and yes, it is social media in general which includes here as well as the question was raised here. The casuals pretty much like I said just want to play games. The Gaslighting you say certainly has high coverage.

Agreed. This is probably one of the most balanced places. Twitter, YouTube and many other forums are just getting to disturbing levels.

That’s the issue because while the games are good, they’re not good enough to make people buy an xbox or invest in platform. Personally, I enjoy the games they’ve released, but the games aren’t translating to more people investing in the ecosystem. I think being head of xbox you do have to take on the blame for that. Just like how Jim Ryan is taking heat for some of Playstation’s current problems . It just comes with territory that being the face of the company means you’ll face heat when its not going well and praise when it is.

Making Timdog an important person in the community was always a mistake. Microsoft should’ve killed that when he was caught harrassing people at a best buy for buying a PS4. He’s done other crap like that and giving them a platform is showing it’s consequences because people inside and outside of the community look at himas a voice for the xbox community. It’s why you see people like Geoff interact with him

In hindsight not sure why they didnt put hi fi rush day and date on switch. Noone woul give a shit honestly because it was on gsmepass. They would have made the money and ps port is a non issue not even need to be discussed.

Switch is not a threat to the xbox ecosystem. Playstation clearly is.

Then again does the switch even run hi fi rush properly. Not sure why snyone would play thst game at 30fps. Would have been a good marketing tool for ms

Hey you wanna play this gsme at 4k and 60fps and on gsmepass …come here. Or you can shell out 40 bucks for a shitty version on this outdated handheld. Win win for MS and the game never comes out on PS.

Im willing to bet secretly MS are annoyed Nintendos hardware is dogshit…otherwise theyd have ported A LOT more games by now

Im convinced of that.
