Starfield |OT| You're Finally Awake... In Space!

I think part of it is that a lot of people apparently play Bethesda games to just walk in straight lines and encounter content. And Starfield doesn’t put its best foot forward if you just walk in a straight line and play only the procgen content.

IDK, that’s the only way I can explain people saying “oh it’s boring” and never saying more. I just assume they just kept going to the plain white rice dish at the buffet and eatin gthat.

HOT TAKE -

Starfield > The Elder Scrolls/Fallout

The action/gunplay in Starfield is an order of magnitude more enjoyable than either of those games.

I agree 100%.

I’m in complete agreement.

Admittedly, they scratch different itches. But if I was told only one of those franchises could survive and the others had to be forever dormant… I wouldn’t hesitate even a little bit to pick Starfield as the survivor.

Different flavors for me. Skyrim still has the best world & exploration. Starfield the best gameplay and main quest by far, SF also generally has higher standard quests, especially those contained small stories. FO is between them in story, gameplay and quests, but has that special FO vibe that no other game has.

Not so hot take

In fairness, I agree and that’s saying something due to how much I love Fallout and ES. The proof is in the pudding though as I’ve put more time in Starfield than my entire time with Skyrim and Fallout 4 combined, and it’s only been out for barely over a year.

I’m a hard sci-fi nerd at heart though and this almost completely scratches that itch better than any RPG I’ve ever played (we all know what parts aren’t and that’s fine).

You’d hope so, the bulk of those games came out in the Bush/Obama first term administration era lol.

It’s been a few days, so figured I should do a follow-up. First off, these are the eight creations I mentioned:

Thoughts on each:

Legendary Vendors - All this mod does is make it so vendors will now have a chance to carry randomized legendary items. I love it.

McClarence Outfitters - Speaking of legendary items, this mod gives you a shop where you can pay to have effects moved from one piece of clothing to another, and so you can effectively create your own custom legendary clothing. edit: There’s more to it.

As far as quality goes, McClarence Outfitters is probably the most impressive of the mods I’ve used so far. It’s got a professionally voice acted character, a minor fetch quest, and a good background story.

GRAV-79 - This is the first of two hovercrafts I bought, and I absolutely love it. Calling it a hovercraft is kinda misleading, it’s more like a flying car. You thought traversal became faster with the new vehicles? Not as friggin’ fast as this thing, since you can just fly above all the terrain. Like really high up in the air, if you want. Or you can just do it as the name implies, and hover inches above the ground. But the only time I take a vehicle is if I wanna get somewhere fast, so I tend to just zip above everything now. I had to trek over 3 km doing the little mini-quest that’s included with McClarence mod, and it was done in a jiffy with this awesome machine.

NEO-8 Airspeeder - Very similar to the GRAV-79, except they opted for a merely long-lasting boost instead of an infinite boost like the aforementioned. That’s reason #1 why I prefer the GRAV-79. Reason #2 is because the NEO-8 is a little too slick for me. Doesn’t quite fit the vibe of the game I’m playing.

Craftable Starborn Suits - This gives you four Starborn spacesuit variants with a bunch of skins for each suit. The suit and helmet come as two pieces, so you can mix and match as much as you want. As someone who really liked the sleekness and simplicity of the the Tempus (NG+8) and didn’t care much for the Venator (the final one) I was pretty keen to give this mod a shot, as nothing really tops the Starborn suits in coolness factor. That said, I may switch and use the suit that you can get from McClarence, but I only just got it today so I haven’t decided yet.

Luxurious Ship Habs - If you enjoy ship building as much as I do, this could be a fun one to play around with. As the name implies, this mod gives you a bunch of new habs. All of which are more luxurious than what’s in the base game, some quite a bit more luxurious. Fancy a ship with it’s own swimming pool? Well, with this mod you can have it!

Personally I got it primarily for the 5 empty habs it came with. I’ve been wanted something completely empty and sleek looking, with no industrial shelving or anything, and this one has fulfilled that immediate desire. At some point I’m sure I’ll get around to building my own luxury liner.

Franky’s Emporium - This basically just adds a little back alley shop to Neon. It’s fine, kinda cute, but this is probably the only mod I wouldn’t buy again if I could do it over in an NG+ sort of a situation.

Spacer Overhaul - This is the only truly cosmetic mod on the list, and as such probably has the smallest impact on your game. It basically replaces the random outfits that Spacers wear, with some pretty slick looking new designs. All the new gear is lootable, so you can use them for your character once you’ve looted it off a Spacer corpse. My character now wears those funky goggles on breathable planets whenever he takes his GRAV-79 hovercraft anywhere.

At 500 credits, Spacer Overhaul is one of the pricier mods I got, and I’m not entirely sure it’s worth it. I do enjoy spacer encounters more now than before, but I’m sure that’s partly because of the novelty and will wear off. Then again, I do love those goggles.

This became a bit lengthier than I thought it was going to be. Kudos if you made it this far down.

Let me know if you have questions.

This looks cool

Yeah, it’s awesome. Landing can be a bit difficult, you have to carefully pump the boost to make it go smoothly, similar to the jet packs, but since it’s indestructible it doesn’t really matter if you come down hard.

And as I mentioned in my (looong) post above, you can just fly inches above the ground if you want.

Nice post, makes me wish I have time to mess with mods like I used to in Skyrim :sob: I kinda exhausted myself in the first playthrough going near 200hrs, with that and my backlog, it’ll probably be long before I get back to a new playthrough and messing around with mods.

Not necessarily related to those specific mods but have you run across any shipbuilding mod that allows you to determine exactly where ladders go? Or at least block ladders? Same with doors. It would be nice to specify exactly where doors go.

I have not, but I’ve only scratched the surface of what mods are available as I’ve only used achievement friendly mods. There’s lots of other mods in the Creations portal, as well as on Nexus mods.

I think @Kals_Els might be better equipped to answer you, as it’s my understanding he’s been going further afield than I have.

Unfortunately I generally don’t use ship mods as I don’t spend too much time building ships. But maybe checking out the modding community on reddit could help.

Apparently there’s more to McClarence Outfitters than I gave it credit for. I was checking out Kinggath’s website and discovered that the features I described above are just the beginning. As you continue to use McClarence’s service, you open up additional quests which unlocks additional features. Like item copying, a winged boostpack, as well as ability to mod more than just suits and helm.

The Doom-inspired quest At Hell’s Gate just dropped. It’s free and made by Kinggath Creations, but published by Bethesda and so is an official quest, with achievement support despite being free.

Kinggath made McClarence Outfitters which I’ve posted about above, and it’s a very high quality mod. On top of that, this new one bearing Bethesda’s official seal of approval makes me expect something pretty good.

That’s pretty awesome!

From reddit, new skin for the Constellation pack.

Also, just did quest and it was a lot of fun. Now I have to go back into the dark and find 3 more plushies that may have been displaced through a wall or ceiling because of my use of powers. Wish me luck!(the actual search isn’t too bad, 2 of them are just a little further down the end room)

Also the suit looks great except one small issue, when in 3rd person our characters do a stretching animation. Lifting their heads up, I can see a seam were the suit isn’t properly connected and I can see my characters skin.
