All of this.
Regarding talk about whether or not Xbox players like Japanese games:
As a primarily-Xbox player, I do like Japanese games. I just don’t care for the vast majority of Japanese games that SE releases, especially since I am not into Final Fantasy. If SE was more consistent with putting out great Japanese games like Fromsoft, Capcom or Nintendo, then their stuff would do just fine on Xbox. SEGA’s positivity regarding Game Pass and Xbox as a whole is proof that Xbox players will show up to play great Japanese games. SE games are just not as good as their competitors, and honestly they need to be bought by someone (idgaf who).
It was Squaresoft that was the good publisher/developer. That s where classics like FF7, Parasite Eve , Racing Lagoon, Brave Fencer Musashi etc etc were created. Today’s Square Enix is a different beast altogether.
I don’t really like this argument because it’s not as if Atlus is the perfect publisher either. Yes, intensely better track record than Square Enix, but I think Octopath Traveler 2 is far better than Soul Hackers 2 and I also think Live a Live, the game that sparked today’s conversation, was one of the best JRPGs of 2022 and one of the best on Switch (granted, you can argue it’s a title from their “golden days”, but still, the remake itself is excellently done too)
Which I should add, are both games I played on Switch, therefore Sony didn’t profit
You still have to play Persona as I recall
I don’t disagree about the other games, but having mainline Persona (and Yakuza for that matter) on Xbox is worth much more than half assed SE support.
In any case, the 2D-HD JRPG of choice this year is going to be Eiyuden Chronicle, book it.
I think what people should narrow it down is the fact Square did support Xbox before, only to shrink a lot. We get it that Japanese developed titles don’t come to Xbox, but the thing is, many of them never touch the platform or are small studios titles. Square was already in the platform for a while, and all the sudden, it’s pulling out? That’s where the real question lies in and I can’t help some missed this fact.
There are some small Japanese companies keep making games for Xbox which feel very interesting to me, like Inti Creates and Kemco.
To be fair there’s a lot of titles worse than Persona 5 Royal, we’d have to discount a lot of publishers/studios if we were ranking them against one of the best games of the last generation
They did support Xbox pretty well for a while - we got pretty much the entire backlog of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and a bunch of Dragon Quest as well among other things. I’d guess that after giving it a solid try the sales numbers just weren’t good enough
Is this short sighted? Probably, they’d potentially gain more in the long run if they took the time to build an audience on Xbox. There’s also definitely business decisions they’ve made that have not helped their position - like releasing Crisis Core on Xbox despite not having FF7 Remake. But I’d also say a factor is that it probably still just comes down to Xbox simply not having as big of an audience for Japanese games (and having a smaller market share overall doesn’t help with that).
I mean, I’m a big fan of Japanese games, people can talk about the success of finally getting Persona on Xbox - I bought a Vita just to play Persona 4 Golden when it came out years ago and Danganronpa and all these other Japanese titles that were only on Vita for a while. I bought a PS4 to play Japanese titles because there was so many games there that just weren’t on Xbox. For a solid decade Playstation has been the place to play Japanese games (with the Switch recently catching up) and even now there’s still just more Japanese titles there. Why wouldn’t there be more of an audience for these games there? I’m lucky, I’ve got all three consoles - I didn’t have to factor this into my choice of console this generation or last, but there’s plenty of people not as fortunate as me. If they like Japanese games I don’t know why they’d pick Xbox - yet. Yeah, it’s great seeing titles like Persona and Yakuza do well but these aren’t exactly niche any more - those had years of hype building them up and a huge burst of popularity around their most recent releases before coming to Xbox and game pass. I don’t think this proves that Xbox’s Japanese troubles are over.
For me personally, like I said - this doesn’t affect me. I have the other consoles, if a game doesn’t launch on Xbox I can just play it elsewhere. I don’t NEED Xbox to do well here. But I’d like to see it happen, and I think it will. I just think it’s going to take more than a couple years to fix a problem that existed for a solid decade. If Xbox keep focusing on Japan, make some key acquisitions (cough sega) - I think they’ll hit a point where it’ll be really hard for a lot of Japanese developers to ignore Xbox any more.
I’m honestly surprised inti creates puts their stuff on Xbox.
Well they use ID@Xbox so they have additional support and stuff right?
But I am happy they do as they are one of my favorite developers right next to Falcom.
They do it for games others wouldnt.
Honestly we should change the title. There is no AND between those companies.
Square Enix Vs Xbox.
Really though, I wonder if it was the best idea for them to release so many medium-sized games last year in such rapid succession instead of spending more time on them (for porting among other reasons) and letting them breathe more.
Could it have something to do with the leadership change over there? Decree from the president to get them all out before his departure in case it changed the mind of the board or whatever?
Xbox, bomaye! Xbox, bomaye!
While this game was already revealed I think this is the worldwide release confirmation.
This game is an outsourced game, “Game Studio” (that is their name, yes) is making it. That studio is also making Synduality for Bandai Namco which -is- coming to Xbox.
Anyway, while I doubt this particular game will be a massive seller, it’s still a Dragon Quest game and will definitely do decent in Japan. Xbox missing out on DQ games only further solidifies their state in the JP market as this is of course one of the pillar IPs there.
couldn’t two shits about random DQ spin offs
DQXII needs to be on Xbox. MS can afford to lose spin offs and these more niche games but Persona 6, KH4 and DQXII need to come to Xbox.
I agree and I would imagine MS is working hard to get it on Gamepass
Maybe. I dont think it will. Sega have been clever with their gamepass deals. As long as its on xbox day 1 ill be happy.
DQ12 absolutely has to be on Xbox. Unless it turns out to go the way of FF and is turned into an ARPG, in which case they can keep it for all I care.
Persona 6 is too big of a game to be on Game Pass anywhere near release. Maybe like 2 years later.
