As claimed by Asus… 50% more performance then steam deck on 15watts
Double the performance of steam deck on on higher TDP

120hz screen. Does it have VRR?
Linus was talking about it. Saying he won’t notice frame drops because of it… Until frames go below 40 or something
A handheld target is very similar to the Cloud target, if you think about it. 1080p target on hardware like the Series S. Games are being patched with larger fonts to play well on phones, as well.
But yes if it falls short of the Series S then it’s more work. Another target. Which, if the unit sells well, isn’t a headache because of all the potential added revenue.
In fact it could be a fantastic target for PC developers. There could be excitement, much like there is for the SD, to optimize the game for it.
I could see them doing something like a handhold next gen. Instead of a series s, just have a handheld along side the console.
If resolution techniques/scaling get good enough by that point that could be a good option
A handheld that you could dock instead of an S + the Premium X option
I am sold If Asus can tap Microsoft to make a custom OS that specializes in handheld mode + native gamepass.
The Phoenix APUs look promising but I want to wait and see after we can get hands on with them at various power settings.
The real test however is going to be a year from now with Strix Point. A node shrink with possibly 8 workgroup processors. If turns out solid, we might be primed for an actual series s portable towards the end of the generation.
I think it could work going forward. You launch the start of gen with a power box and tuned down box and then on the backend a portable of the tuned down that lets you play the full generation of games (plus previous) as well as the inevitable 2 or 3 years of mostly crossgen games.
With upcoming 7840U APUs we are about to cross the theoretical 4 TF of series S
By the end of this year we may know if Series S portable could be possible
Low cu count and high clocks require too much wattage. In addition, not sure if 12CUs at 2+ghz can emulate 20cus at 1.565 ghz.
Thats not a real issue.
Theoretically it can.
My notion is that this much theoritical power is now possible in a small device
Also, and as evident from PS5 vs Series X. A wider but slower system is more power efficient then a smaller but faster system
Hence, 20 CUs at around 60% of clocks will be more efficient then 12 CUs at 100% of clocks
Hopes
The handheld Gods have sent a messanger… Xbox series S handheld is possible
@proelitedota your eyes will lit up watching this video
Series S is a Trojan horse
I knew the GPU clocks were fishy and there is something else at play.
His 720p and 2TF solution for Series S games is a no-starter. All the existing Series S games would need patching either by the BC team or the devs. Like a reverse fps boost.
I can see this happening. With ABK deal, Xbox open it new universal store that include mobile, pc and console in one place. It seem logical a handheld is coming.
Jez has said that MS engineers have told him this simply isn’t possible due to heat dissipation issues…in a device that would be affordable.
It’s not happening.
I don’t think it is. They are focussed on cloud gaming because it lets you play the normal versions of games on mobile devices.
If they introduce a handheld they will have to build a specific version for that for every game.
I don’t see MS doing it. It’s not part of their strategy. It adds complexity. It probably restricts what games you can even make unless you work on basis that not everything has to work on the handheld.
You could have a cloud hybrid thing that plays some games locally and some in cloud…but I just don’t see it yet. Any viable handheld would be premium price meaning they’d almost be competing against themselves…
Offcourse it is not happening… for now
We are expecting 2024 holiday. Lot of time till then.
I think the handheld is part of the next generation of systems.
I disagree with this. I see the vast majority of the adopters of the first iteration of the Xbox handhelds are folks who are already invested in the Xbox ecosystem, who seeks to have higher engagement within the Xbox ecosystem.
According to Phawx, which I agree with, the best you can do in 2024 at 3nm, 15w SOC, is a 8 core Zen at 3.4ghz and 2TF gpu.
So Series S even on 3nm, in 2024, is out of the picture.
Prior to 2025 and sub 2nm, the best you can do is a device half way between One and Series S, like the one suggested by Phawx, or in my OP.
