Specs for a hypothetical Xbox portable

I always talk about how we require some new technologies to make High performance handhelds possible

This tech is one of them

You know what will really get people’s mood up here? Announcement of the Xbox handheld.

Not sure if it will happen

Even Nintendo doesn’t want to make another handheld anytime soon :frowning:

:eyes:

This is a key development in my opinion. This is the first time I’ve seen Phil forgo a streaming solution for a native solution on the road.

He also likely got a unit to test and report any issues to the vendor

This screen came out last year though.

Is this the same one Jesse just got?

I think so. That being said there wasn’t any new revisions AFAIK.

I don’t think Phil promotes a year old third party accessory. Does he even promote third party accessories ever?

He did show off that he was using the Logitech cloud thing and I feel like a few other third party hardware things a couple times but can’t think what.

Yeah, but I always thought he was showing up third party accessories to mainly promote Xbox products. Logitech for Xcloud.

Not sure what he is promoting here. It’s not like people aren’t aware of the Series S or Highfi Rush.

On the go in EU, I expect him to promote Xcloud.

I think showing off the screen that shows you can make a series s portable for travel works… I’m kinda thinking about it for myself and if I did travel more if probably buy one.

You are the only person with somewhat similar taste for a handheld like me

Glad you are here

Just finished reading over Microsoft’s response to the CMA provisional findings report, and it made me wonder a bit. They indicated in the filing that the key strategic reason behind the purchase, on top of obviously wanting COD, is for mobile reasons, and not primarily King despite its cash flows. They also highlight in depth that they intend with specific Activision and Blizzard mobile offerings and ongoing investment, to open an Xbox Mobile Platform, which we have heard of in other earlier filings. In the wrapup, they mentioned about investments into the mobile platform they would make only as a result of the merger occurring, and it struck me as unlikely that they would have a mobile game market to take on Google and Apple (and seemingly offer more competitive pricing to devs) without likely also engineering their very small mobile device offerings to be able to demonstrate key competitive advantages for consumers.

So while I’ve never really expected much mobile wise from Xbox, this does actually make me wonder if they would get some ability to work with the Surface team to influence either the architecture of upcoming phones or offer gaming related accessories to go with them to help take advantage of future efforts in the area.

I’ll say that one of the bigger reasons I bought into the Windows Phone platform, in addition to figuring that Microsoft had more to lose from screwing me over with not handling my data well than Google or Apple, was because of the ability to earn Xbox Achievements on the platform. I then bought a Razer Phone because of its gaming abilities and because I didn’t want a Galaxy, and now am back on a Surface Duo that honestly works pretty well for XCloud which I typically play on several times a week. If they release their next model with extra cooling or a chip built in for handling graphic capability in games, I’d definitely be happy to pick one up.

Obviously they would have plenty to do with investing in content and infrastructure for the new platform, but I do think the merger could have an impact on whether we do see something mobile with Xbox considered during the design phase. They might even do their own handheld, and I have a feeling they’d work with Valve and Logitech to get their recent devices to work on the store as well with some sort of revenue sharing deal.

You maybe onto something

I think MS won’t mind investing there first party stuff on a new platform (mobile as you mentioned)

This could be a thing

New contender

This device may very well answers the xbox handheld question

It has custom developed SoC from AMD. Zen 4 and rdna 3

Wait and watch

Definitely seems better than the Deck but price and battery life will be key

ASUS claims ROG Ally has double the performance of Steam Deck. So it’s over 3 TLOPS? Which is not far away from XSS’s 4 TFLOPS. I think Microsoft may release a portable XSS later in this generation.

Double the performance or tflops numbers doesn’t matter unless they are sustained performance as if running on wall power

Rdna3 and zen4 does bring enough wattage save to have same performance as steam deck at much lower power requirements

It is possible. There is light at the end.

There’s so many factors to consider beyond power, plus if MS were to launch their own handheld, that means actually supporting it and making sure games run well

Will they want to force yet more work onto their own developers to do so?

Would they just prefer for all these other companies releasing their own handhelds that already run Game Pass and take away all the R&D headaches and work required?

I think a dedicated xbox handheld would be cool but there’s so many potential issues and drawbacks to consider

There are many drawbacks… But only xbox handheld would come in my budget because it can be subsidised by the platform store. That’s why I keep asking for xbox handheld again and again

Also, the headache is worth taking into account for xbox as well. Nintendo is eating the handheld console market unrivaled at this point. With series S, only xbox has a chance to enter that market.
