I wish I got more info, but to me, it doesn’t feel that way. Minecraft was huge already by the time Microsoft purchased them. Destiny 2 really took off when it became independent. I don’t know the player base or anything, so I don’t know if they spent a lot. For us gamers, Bethesda purchase was obviously a better deal. For investment, it may be the case as well. If Starfield ends up Skyrim 2.0 in terms of sales and scope, then it’s undoubtedly money well spent.
I will never understand the reasoning behind these. It is impossible to bargain a mammoth like COD with Destiny. Microsoft is not losing anything with this deal as much as Sony will.
I would understand if it’s Fortnite, GTA, or even Apex, but this is about as good as Sea of Thieves (I think) in which they already got one. CoD is so above their league (popularity wise).
The real disappointment is Sony won’t create a cool trailer when a company joins the family. Seriously looking forward to Activision Blizzard join Xbox video.
Check the edit. Not sure if that’s allowed though.
You know, if Halo Reach was done and Sony purchased Bungie right after, I would feel it.
Microsoft bailed at the combination of 2 Billion whilst letting Bungie remain independent and multi-platform.
Sony paying almost double what Bungie was willing to take from Microsoft while agreeing to the same independent/multiplatform stipulation is wild.
Bungie got over big time.
It is very expensive but the price for gaming companies is only heading up. Microsoft has made it more expensive for everyone while at the same time getting some great deals which is pretty ironic
Microsoft really has benefited from doing a first strike when it comes to this acquisition arms race. I doubt Zenimax would have been ~$8 billion if they were purchased now.
The price for studios will only keep going up as it has been shown that companies are willing to throw a lot of money around.
Destiny Is running on azure or will run on azure after the acquisition?
The thought of Sony nabbing Capcom and taking Monster Hunter away makes me want to vomit.
Likewise for any possibility of them acquiring FromSoft.
It does rollseyes
They’ve been negotiating for 6-7 months. It’s a strategic acquisition.
I’m wondering if it’s possible that while the money they paid for Bungie is a lot, it’s not that huge of a deal for Sony? I mean it’s a lot for just one studio and so far one IP. It’s guaranteed to make them money , but it’s still a lot. Wonder what the chances are that upcoming other acquisitions are actually significantly higher in price or actually similar or below.
Many studios are now part of a big publisher too. How many studios like a Bungie, IO are there still?
This makes a lot of sense to me. It would be a great way to differentiate their multiplatform output.
“Sure, the game is available on PC and Xbox, but only on PlayStation can you play it free with your Spartacus subscription on day 1.”
Then sales on the other platforms can help them recover any losses (perceived or otherwise) from including it with Spartacus.
only Arc system, Level 5, CC2 , Platinum games, Techland, Crytek and IOI are ones who still private owned studios.
