Sony are scare of a good old competition?
Sony should be afraid. The moment people know they can play COD through Gamepass, it doesn’t matter if Playstation still gets the games… Xbox already “won” on that front.
Now it’s time for Sony to put their money on developing their services and games, instead of obscure deals and 70$ remakes.
Could not have said it better myself.
Why does Sony care? They are all about 3rd-person, single-player DEEP NARRATIVE adventure genres.
I know you’re most likely saying this in jest but just in case:
They care because Call of Duty represents a massive, significant chunk of their annual revenue and they have spent exorbitant amounts of money trying to associate CoD with PlayStation, which the results of was very obvious during the PS4 generation.
Additionally, they talk about CoD influencing a users “console of choice.” CoD day one into Xbox Game Pass, regardless if it is exclusive or not, will make people flock to Xbox in droves, and they are aware of this.
Additionally, they admit to Xbox Game Pass being so popular right now (60-70% of the userbase) that it would take many years and a ton of money for a rival to be able to compete. Now, imagine day one CoD games on the service where little Timmy doesn’t have to spend $70 every year to play with his friends. Combine that with the wealth of other amazing games on Xbox Game Pass and yeah, it’s terrifying for them.
Finally, it can be simply be summed up as sour grapes. They’re known to be extremely anti-competitive, even since PlayStation began back in the 90’s. Now they have competition who is fighting back. You mess with the bull, you get the horns, and they poked this bear for a very long time.
Look at the statements from all the other publishers on this; everyone seems totally okay with this deal except for Sony, who are throwing their own studios/devs under the bus to try and mess up the deal, lol.
The more Sony complains the more it will be piss off Microsoft and Microsoft will stop being nice to Sony. As soon as they bring Playstation Advantage and other exclusive deals, Sony’s case will evaporate. They can even ask for investigation into Sony’s leverage of their market share to suppress other competitors.
Its sad that people think Microsoft and Xbox shouldnt be entitled to its own property. I mean Microsoft is committing to employing 10,000 people with this move and cleaning up a toxic work environment.
What is Sonys contribution?
Is Phil Spencer not entitled to the sweat off his brow?
Imagine a The Game Pass Advantage ad campaign with the next COD as it’s big focus.
As Xbox is unable to make good marketing campaigns themselves, they should just copy Sony
Exactly, this is where the money is and they know that very well.
All this “prestige”, “we are above everyone else” image for their 1st party games that they are boasting since the PS4 is just to boost the ego of their most loyal fanbase because in reality they are not doing that great on that front either and the biggest chunk of their income is coming from the apparently “non-prestige” games. When your most hyped game of the generation with a 93% metacritic score which is a sequel to one of most acclaimed games ever with a marketing campaign where even my mother knew about this game sells 10 million copies in almost two years (and probably half of them not even at full price) in a ~115m install base then yeah…prestige my ass.
As a good friend of mine said about a year ago Sony is a giant with legs made by glass and the Activision deal, their sudden change of heart for the games as a service, the fact that they asked for 10 dollars/euros for PS5 upgrades when even smaller publishers like fuckin’ Focus Interactive didn’t charge for plus their 1st party sales numbers in the last two years if anything proved that this was the case all along.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Xbox packaging is updated soon after to show Call of Duty. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they did a CoD themed Xbox.
I don’t particularly think that will piss off Microsoft. Microsoft are playing some 4D chess that we can’t even fathom to comprehend. Mainly the very long game, and ambitions for the next 20+ years. However, for example, one of Sony’s biggest ambitions this gen (that has been proven) was to try and buy their way to link IPs and developers assosiated with Xbox instead to PlayStation. Xbox was gaining momentum unlike last gen and they seemingly wanted to nip it in the butt early. Well, Microsoft now have the massive upper hand here and the leverage they have is uncomparable. Microsoft may not care about the Final Fantasies of the world, but Sony are going to have a much harder timer (if at all) to gain timed exclusivity of BioShock and Mass Effect.
And yes, Sony’s history of anti-competitiveness towards Microsoft really puts a hole in any of their arguments. Sony are known to fight tooth and nail to hide and redact their statements/emails (like they tried to hide the fact that implement a crossplay tax on developers during the Epic trial), and we may likely never hear what they tell the FTC, et al. But thanks to the Brazilian government, we get a glimpse of their true feelings.
Well, with all our theories I am pretty sure that some of us are right. But Microsoft is trying to push the deal as fast as possible so the less Sony opposes the deal, the better for Sony as Sony cannot stop the deal as they don’t have any ground.
Bungie’s deal went fast but I guess due to it being only american company and it did not require approvals from a lot of regulators?
The really ironic thing is that many gamers own a PlayStation (and Nintendo) only for the exclusives. So imagine a console base so high and factor in that I am one of those purchases of Last of Us 2. When it comes to PlayStation, I only buy the exclusives, all third party games get purchased for Xbox. The point I’m getting at is perhaps Xbox and PC gamers are the only ones even buying these PlayStation games lol.
This is the thing that is fascinating to me.
According to Sony/PlayStation evangelists, Microsoft is expected to clean up a multi-billion dollar company and spend billions of their own money fixing things. Then, they have to fund and manage said massive company, including Phil’s plan to revive dead IP and give studios way more freedom to be creative and do what they want to do. All this is putting things quite simply because the truth is that Microsoft and Phil Spencer have their work cut out for them. And yet, according to these people, PlayStation is entitled to these games (not just CoD, but all their games) because… reasons?
Meanwhile, nobody bats an eyelash at Spider-Man being an exclusive IP that sells tens of millions of PlayStation consoles and that’s purposefully used to sway consumers to buy a PlayStation over an Xbox. An IP that they do not own. An IP that is literally called Marvel’s Spider-Man, not Spider-Man or Sony’s Spider-Man. An IP that has been beloved since 1962 and is arguably the most popular superhero in the world, that again, is not owned by Sony. And whenever this is brought up, the argument is that Sony’s studio develops the games (they actually bought Insomniac after the first game released, but I digress).
Doesn’t this same situation apply here? Microsoft will be funding Call of Duty. Microsoft will be held accountable if it underperforms, or radically changes for the worse. Microsoft is taking the hit on releasing the games bi-annually. Just like Starfield, Microsoft took the hit for the delay (despite this being the best thing for the studio and game). If it ends up flopping, it’s on Microsoft, and they’re the ones that will be roasted. Coversely, if Final Fantasy 16 ends up flopping hard, Sony will face zero repercussions as they only moneyhatted exclusivity and have no hand in development or distribution. Even Street Fighter 5, which apparantly they had a hand on funding to come out when it did (which we all know is BS because the game should’ve stayed in development and not have released so far early), placed no repercussions on Sony despite the fact that them rushing it was the sole reason it flopped critically and commercially, and took the franchise from undisputed #1 in the genre to be overtaken by Mortal Kombat.
The entitlement is insane, and Sony’s questionable practices (that are usually ignored) are not going to work out for them anymore.
And still, Sony report that profits are down 37%. for this quarter.
Lets see GT7, Forbidden West sales then.
May I put forth a friendly request? I think the following is a reasonable ask.
Let’s not turn this discussion into a silly “list war” of sales numbers versus of various franchises. Nothing of value is gained from petty bickering, it only adds fodder to the console war rhetoric. It’s not even part of the natural discussion on this topic.
And you still forgetting about game-pass, anything that fit you’re fake narrative…right!
Also, like I’ve already told you, Sony report that profits are down 37%. for this quarter. That means those games sales that you are cheering up didn’t help them at all for the quater.
