Senua's Saga: Hellblade II - Gameplay reveal

Downgrading is stuipid to talk about heck Horizon Forbidden West and Forza Horizion 5 got downgraded. Watch the initial reveal of HFW and compare the water there with the water now. Or the cliff scene in H5.

The fact this is getting so close to the ENGINE DEMO is insane

If the whole game looks like the video(which I only watched in 4k this morning) then that is just going to be an absolute stunner of a game. The visuals, sound and storyline will all be as good as we can get. Hope they nail the combat and get rid of the puzzles

looked incredible, no two way about it

Watching TGA now and when Geoff said this was announced two years ago I didn’t think of Hellblade 2 yet until Ninja Theory logo showed up, I got goosebumps before it was shown because he was hyping it up like crazy.

This…is in-game? Fucking hell!!! But Geoff also said it was gameplay , but it seems to go into cinematics a lot, so it seems we walked around and when she attacks the monster it’s a cinematic or do we actually do that attack ourselves? It seemed to transition into cinematic.

I’m not worried about the combat for this game because Ninja Theory have already talked about how the actress that plays Senua and the animators have gone through years of extensive combat training. The combat has been described as very brutal in this game.

The combat in Hellblade I was decent, so with more time and budget im expecting a decent step up. My best guess why it wasn’t shown is that Ninja Theory games are very mo-cap heavy and they just recently got back in the studio to capture footage. It probably just isn’t ready to show off yet.

That is actually a good point. But I am not worried because we know this game has a lot more developers on the combat compared to the previous game.

There is even some early mo-cap footage of combat in this video

Yeah I have zero worries about the combat. Some people online are drawing way too many conclusions from this footage which, at the moment, is completely out of context for us as players in relation to the rest of the game. This is just one short sequence in a much bigger game. There’s obviously going to be sword combat etc. Can’t wait to see more.

I expect sword strikes the really make open wounds on the body, this game gona meet new hights in brutality.

I know it’s not the same scope, but this demo feels way way more impressive than…let’s say…God of War Ragnarok.

Everyone noticed the downgrade, of course, but it’s still above and beyond everything we’ve seen so far this gen.

I’m not even sure this game will be for me, but NT really get how to do this stuff now. I got Death Stranding vibes with the cinematography blending with touches of interactivity in this sequence, although I hope it actually delivers as a game in the end.

I’m not sure what to expect. It seems crazier than the first game, which was already crazy experimental. I don’t want to kill that giant

Oh I have zero worries about combat.

With at least three games this studio has shown they can make great combat with DmC and Enslaved being great combat and Hellblade just good enough, but better is always a good thing.

What I wonder is what actually in this video is actual gameplay, I assume it’s the bits where Senua is running through the cave and towards the monster but in this video it transitions a lot into what seems cinematics, the bit where she aims at the monster too.

I’m guessing this might be a part that either was made for the show or is a actual part intended for full game but has a lot of transitioning into cinematics.

But this being in-game is just insane.

pretty much the running and shooting spears

I should not be surprised because the game comes from Xbox, but people are talking about ā€˜downgrades’ rather than the fact the game is looking insane.

I think this scene may be easier (relatively) to do, because of ā€œnot much gameplayā€ and it’s a powerful scene to showcase.

I hope there’s a bit of exploration and more stuff to do than the first game, but it will probably be a linear experience and for obvious reasons. The studio is tiny in comparison to the juggernauts like Santa Monica Studio.

That’s what I thought. I think they just want to show people that the game will have impressive visuals and the sequence should be ā€˜easier’ to bug test etc, because it is in a straight line and not a lot of dynamic moments are happening.

But did people actually expect the trailer from two years ago was how it would look during gameplay? Because that was photo realism, pretty much impossible to tell of that was real or a game. Senua still looks incredibly realistic, we see the in-game character model and this has to be the best looking in-game character model I’ve ever seen.

Yeah that makes sense.

I can see the game having more larger areas than the first, that would not surprise me. The team may be small but man they know what they are doing. They also made Enslaved which was a fantastic game with lovely environments and iirc wasn’t super linear. My hope is that NT eventually makes something of that scope/scale again and then with these kind of visuals, Jesus.

From the time she starts walking in the cave to after she throws the spear and lights the black stuff on fire is gameplay. Everything after she started running until she falls down is gameplay. After she helps the one guy stand up is gameplay until she makes it to the barricade. After that is all cutscene with maybe a second of the player being in control of aiming the spear before the giant smashes the barricade.

Hellblade one was heavy on the gameplay to cutscene stuff so this seems like a natural next gen extension of that.

in most cases, you can see the exact moments the game shifts from gameplay to cinematic cuz there’s a slight cut when the shift happens.

Good lord almighty, well I am super impressed. Also those running animations man, wow wow wow, so life-like.

This is what I call next gen, or I should say current gen worthy. This was probably off PC, but if it looks like this on XSX I would not be against it if they opt for 30fps or so. For a game like this, looking like this I would be fine with that.

One of these days I need to take the time to actually play the first one.
