This part alone tells you that this isn’t just like Bethesda.
Tbh I dont even care about CoD, I mean if its on GP il give it a go but other than that, I dont care
It’s the other franchises im curious about and while big multiplayer games with microtransactions make sense being multiplat for all the money they make, new IP and single player games should 100%, absolutely be exclusive going forward
This is the first time I’ve seen Klobrille genuinely pissed and I don’t blame him tbh
Make no mistake, even if there was no Bungie deal whatsoever Sony’s moneyhatting would go unchallenged by the gaming media.
Makes sense because messaging has been mixed and the phrase of releasing games where gamepass is played is not an empty statement. I do hope after deal goes through Phil and Microsoft PR is clear what their plans are because so far messaging has been somewhat mixed. Anyways, cool games are on gamepass, but doesn’t seem Microsoft is bold enough to take loss in revenue to close market share which allows Sony to do these timed exclusive deals
All this while, I’d been seeing “there’s no regulatory problems whatsoever, lol armchair lawyers hurr durr” to suddenly “hmm yeah it’s clear ms is facing regulatory pressure”, like no shit. I’m glad they are.
I don’t think anyone can disagree with what he said here. Perfectly worded.
It was indeed crystal clear when Phil said that about Game Pass, no muddy waters really until today. Why have this exclusive, but not that, yep. I agree with him about Spiderman too.
yeah, they were not challenged. but now even those who dare to challenge will be shut down with “Look at Bungie!”
I dont see Microsoft moneyhatting third party exclusives to purposely keep them off a platform with the hope that it dies tho.
You are crazy if you think that Microsoft is spending $70 billion on a huge publisher with thousands of developers to make ALL games coming out of these new studios multiplatform going forward. This is clearly all about the big existing multiplatform games such as COD that make regulatory approval easier because you “aren’t taking existing games from a competitor platform” and arguably may have always been considered for multiplatform because it is the largest revenue game every year. But Phil Spencer would have been laughed out of the boardroom at Microsoft if he goes in with a plan that has them spending on their largest acquisition in company history to simply supply ALL new games coming out of those new developers going forward to the competing platforms. Think about it for a minute.
Same. I think it is going to serve as a really interesting comparison case too for MS, where they can look at how well Starfield pulls consumers into Xbox/GP ecosystem compared to how future CoD’s do (being day 1 GP but also $70 on PS5). Another interesting element nobody is talking about is the thing about putting games on Nintendo platforms. Would that be thru the cloud we think? Hmmm.
I mean you literally said that not taking CoD away from Playstation was and I quote “giving handouts”… that’s as bad-faith as it gets because it disregards the presence of Game Pass and the fact that if anyone is receiving “handouts” it’s the audience that doesn’t pay per-title and has said titles included in their subscription….
Bad-faith would constitute promoting blatant console-warring, which is directly in our terms, and while this is an Xbox-centric forum, arguments that decry moves like this because you want to see an entire corporation fail is very much console-warring/bad-faith (there have been a number of comments like this across the forum). Secondly, how anyone could think, after Bethesda’s exclusivity announcement, that Microsoft isn’t all in on Xbox is beyond me to the point that it absolutely reads as concern-trolling. Frankly, so does the “what if Game Pass fails” concern not long after 25 million subscribers (nearly 8 times that of its closest competitor).
Finally, and this applies to you and @javycane, but this false narrative that this isn’t a place where you can criticize Xbox when it’s deserved is utter bullshit and frankly offensive. We were all right there in the trenches with you when Xbox announced the price hike. We’ve all stated criticisms about not responding to this or that from Sony over the years. And you’re talking to the author of the article that directly called out Xbox/Playground for its anti-Arabic name filtering in Forza Horizon 5. Cut the bullshit; criticism is fine, but this hyperbolic “Xbox doesn’t care about its gamers” schtick is childish and verifiably false.
You’re missing off the key word.
It’s not “make them” it’s “make them available”
To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision
I disagree, it’s a reference of clarification that Microsoft isn’t going to remove these games once the marketing deal ends. The way it reads otherwise is implies these games are only going to be made available for a timed period.
Actually that is wrong, because until the buyout closes, Microsoft can’t implement porting games to Switch as a policy at AB, so it can only be in reference to games already released. In fact implying that they will bring CoD to Switch is illegal.
Alternatively, Microsoft believes leaving ABs legacy titles available on other platforms is the best thing for gamers, when they could just as easily scrub them for eternity.
Well obviously that would be crazy as that is explicitly against the language MS used themselves.
"Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles.
This relates to current games and some subset of IP. New titles like AB’s new survival game will likely be exclusive. Nobody should expect “All” games to be multi.
I don’t know why Jez is only focusing on CoD here when they talk about all other games going even into the future, and that’s precisely why Klobs is pissed.
This messaging is totally different from the Bethesda one, it DOES imply that every game is going to stay on playstation AND some will even come to Nintendo.
“And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love.”
I don’t know man, this is pretty clear to me.
Maybe console warring is the wrong term to use but y’all are still obviously viewing the industry from a console wars perspective.

ABK can still benefit Xbox and you as an Xbox user DIRECTLY. Your own perception of exclusives being the main driver of growth are misguided.
-
Xbox has shown incredible platform growth with 0 exclusives for like a year or something, on top of already being semi-multiplatform by releasing on PC. That is growth with as minimal exclusivity as possible, your concenrs about the growth of Xbox are legitimately unfounded as I don’t know how you can be more concerned for the growth of a platform more than the platform owners themselves.
-
Unless the ABK acquisition stops other acquisitions, you have no reason to worry about it stopping Xbox from targeting more platform exclusive content.
-
Deal is still not close, MS legally can’t be fully forthcoming about their plans unless they fully legally own ABK, your concerns about “lack of clarity” can wait.
Sounds ironic, yet it completely makes sense.
Exclusives sell consoles, the more consoles sold, the more expensive for Sony to get temporal exclusives from third parties.
It’s fine to release your games on competitor’s consoles, it’s just not fine if they keep removing third party AAA’s from your console, and we’ll see another 2 at least this year, first with Square Enix and we’ll see what else, but i bet it’s not only me who is at least slighty worried to see the platforms the next Bioshock releases on once it’s announced for example.
Man I would hate to do this because really…I’m just fking exhausted with this crap…
Do we really want to analyze all of this shit? No…not gonna do it…just gonna wait and see
As of right now I do believe new games, like a Starcraft Ghost, that Blizzard Survival game etc will all be exclusive but COD, Overwatch, Diablo multiplat
Just a quick note: We shouldn’t assume that a game skipping Xbox is because of a Sony deal. If there’s proof or something sure, but I think we as a community should be better than perpetuating an assumption as a fact.
