[PLEASE READ STAFF POST] Microsoft says they have committed to Sony that they will keep Call of Duty and other titles on Playstation "beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love."

Bottom line for me. Microsoft is going to do whatever they calculate is best for them. As long as that means Game Pass day one, that’s a win for me, whether the games also come to PS or not.

Nintendo I get but sony not so much. They would make more money making it exclusive and converting people instead of devoting resources and time to make sure these games on run on playstation while playstation takes a 30% cut and charge a cross play fee. A lot of these games will be next gen only and considering how hard it is to get consoles rn it would makes sense to make it so that people make their decision now before they end up sticking with their old ecosystem

Guys…Game Pass isn’t coming to PlayStation. Sony are literally launching a competing program soon of their own. Even if they weren’t, the can’t allow a rival program on their platform because it diverts revenue from the primary way they get it - sales and microtransactions.

The overreactions on here are getting out of control and, meanwhile, on OtherERA they’re all reading this as not being a committment by MS at all (“available” being used instead of “released”, etc)

Phil has already talked about ES6 and more or less said it will be exclusive

One thing all this suggests to me is GamePass isnt coming to PS anytime soon (if you were one of the believers)

If CoD was exclusive I could have seen them using it as leverage to get it on there but since that’s no longer the case, any reason to have it on there for PS goes out the window

Saying PS5 has already won this generation and will be the biggest platform is a pretty bold statement to make on an Xbox forum lol :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: So if Xbox outsells PS5 does your rationale still make sense even?

Like lets say MS being Warzone 2 and a console port of WOW to Playstation, they are living up to this agreement.

However, a COD reboot and a new single player in the WOW universe are both Xbox exclusive, again something they can get away with

This is honestly great news. A smaller cod fan base helps no one.

Sorry about the Elder Scrolls and Fallout talk, but nothing surprises me about future decisions. Anyways, I don’t personally mind as long as games launch on gamepass.

Are you seriously claiming that when they say they will not only abide by existing agreements but also will make new CoD games on PSX that this somehow indicates that they won’t release new CoD games on PSX?! o.0

All indications from the blog post suggest this will apply to ABK games in general going forward. They explicitly state it is NOT only for existing games already on the system.

This was done specifically to avoid the FTC killing the ABK deal. Their blog post spends 1500 words basically explaining as much. This is not what they would have preferred doing if it was up to them I think. They are doing this because they HAVE to for the deal to go through.

^^This. Also, yes during the Apple/EPIC court battle there was an email with Phil saying he wanted to keep tryna make GP on PSX/Nintendo happen, that was an old email and he has since publicly explained that those competitors do not have any interest in GP being on their ecosystems (for the obvious reasons Hix notes here). Some will say ‘but they can do a 1P only version!’…but for one thing that would be too small to have any impact (it would have to be what, $5/mo…? far too small for MS’s goals) and it is not at all obvious that it would force us Xbox owners over to buying a PS5 anyhow. Plus every second spent playing Halo thru the cloud on a PS5 is time spent not engaging with Sony’s ecosystem.

GP on competing ecosystems should have no rational place in the convo here. It only showed up in the first place bc ppl wanted to explain what Phil was giving up CoD exclusivity in exchange for from Sony. Now we know they didn’t wheel and deal with Sony, they conceded exclusivity to the FTC to get the deal to abide by the new laws being written.

I don’t think Spyro, Crash, etc. will be multi-plat. I think it will only be the big multi-player titles. If the reporting is correct this is a regulatory concern which shows the limitations of future acquisitions. It sounds like big acquisitions will come with the caveat that the big MP IP stay multi-plat.

So if MS got TakeTwo GTA would stay multi-plat for instance.

I wonder if this means CoD will come to Gamepass in 2022 or 2023.

This would anger me so much more if i gave two shits about Cowadoody. I do hope that MS can pull certain teams like Beenox, Toys for Bob and Treyarch off of it to make other kinds of games though. I doubt any non Overwatch or COD related new ips will be multiplatform. I do understand why some are pissed about it though.

I have been swamped with work and just jumped in to see the gaming world burning here, lol. Look, I will confess even as the owner of PlayStation 5 that I like getting some “wins” over the toxic Sony fanboys at times. But basically, this tells me the following:

  • Microsoft is crazy into this global gaming thing as a company to spend $70 billion and still offer some key IP as multiplatform, so continue to watch out for other moves in the coming years. And this type of messaging should help greatly with any regulatory review it would seem.

  • It seems clear that the mainline Call of Duty releases will end up as multiplatform going forward and I guess Blizzard things already on PlayStation like the Diablo series

  • They just bought an insane amount of developer talent across all of these studios, so I fully expect plenty of new IP or even “spinoff” IP from mainline existing IPs that can be developed as “exclusive” to the broad Xbox ecosystem. The recent news about COD being considered for more of a 2-year cycle fits right in line with this. I would also note that something which could be absolutely huge on console in World of Warcraft if ported/updated well could also still be Xbox exclusive because it has never been on PlayStation.

  • This is such a huge acquisition with plenty of discussion and eyes on it, and I still think that there are cards being played here to try to back Sony off of some of their gatekeeping of content from 3rd party developers. Sony could get more scrutiny going forward if they don’t quit with some of the shady practices.

In what world are Crash and Spyro popular franchises when compared to other ABK franchises like COD and Overwatch? I think even Tony Hawk is reaching.

The only thing they can do to make COD available on PS without releasing the PS version is either via Gamepass or xcloud. Other than that idk.

Yeah I was sure either. Although Crash got a brand new game and is more popular than Spyro, easily.

So basically CoD, Diablo and Overwatch then?

oh boy, you act like you don’t know how the cards are dealt with Sony.

I am more worried about the upcoming Sony money-hats after the Bungie deal than I was before it. now Destiny being multiplatform will be used by media as bleach to clean up any toxic Sony money hats. “hey look, they kept Bungie games multiplatform, so they’re cool”.

Well again, they didn’t write “We will continue making New Call of Duty for PS5” as some sites are claiming they wrote “To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision”

This comment

And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love.

Is just to reassure the FTC, that those titles remaining on the PSStore is not conditional with Sonys marketing deal.

Of couse I would like to raise these points

  1. They’re talking Warzone only
  2. Is gamepass and Xcloud streaming defined as “making available”? Because then the balls in Sonys court.
