Personally I don’t care anymore if CoD stays multiplatform or not. Do I think MS has every right to make it exclusive? Absolutely, and I do think it’s a wise thing to do too if you want to grow your service.

Same as if Sony were to buy SE, we can already say goodbye to FF, so anything else would stop coming to Xbox too, believe it. It sucks, but that’s how it works.

And I also can’t deny that i enjoy seeing Sony like this after all their arrogant and annoying bullshit.

Also since the same argument is coming up quite a lot I feel people should be reminded - Final Fantasy VII Remake sold somewhere over 5 million copies since it came out (probably a couple million more since this number is from 2020 and there’s been a couple additional versions out but I’m just going off the available numbers), Call of Duty is a billion dollar franchise that can sell anywhere between 15 and 30 million copies a year on top of a hugely successful live service spin off and mobile games. I don’t agree with moneyhatting, but these things are on very very different scales. Sony personally stands to lose billions over time if Call of Duty goes exclusive, on top of anything else that goes exclusive from this deal.

Xbox invested a LOT in gaming, while Sony just went “we’re fine, just rolling, cash is flowing”…

And now we’re at the point where the CEO has no better idea than calling Phil out for what was a warning call, so they would know what will happen well in advance. I think that’s fair of Phil to do that, but he got spat in the face.

I don’t think it’s stupid, even if I disagree with his sentiment. Microsoft made a written promise to Sony to keep Call of Duty on their platform for multiple years after any contracts had concluded - they didn’t do this out of kindness, it’s a strategic move because they’re trying to avoid regulators forcing them into more than this. Now, I disagree with what some seem to think here - I don’t think Microsoft is eyeing up Call of Duty as an exclusive even after the contracted period ends, I think Microsoft intends to keep Call of Duty multiplatform for as long as it’s beneficial for them to do so - but they also want to get through this acquisition without having to make legal promises as to what they’re gonna be doing a decade ahead of time. The simple fact is the industry could change, and in 10 years time maybe Call of Duty makes more sense as an exclusive. Sony is just playing the other side of the same strategy here - they know Microsoft are trying to avoid promising anything more than they have to and know this statement is going to make it harder for Microsoft to get through the regulation phase without making additional promises, additional promises that directly benefit Sony.

This is exactly how I read it too.

FF not being on Xbox kills the JRPG genre on the platform. Same thing to SF and the fighting genre last gen. Aggressive CoD and Destiny deals to hamper the shooter genre on Xbox as much as possible. If you believe CoD will hurt Playstation that much, you are disrespecting everything else they have and have done, specifically the brand strength. They will lose revenue and players but let’s not act like it will weaken them anywhere significantly. I don’t think ABK being exclusive will do much worse to Sony than what FF and Gensin and exclusive Marvel games do to Xbox already.
