Playstation Showcase OT: NOT ACTUAL GAMEPLAY

ahh, that makes sense. thanks for clarifying that for me.

I see theres all sorts of rumours throwing around about stuff not making the showcase, like a PC port coming in July, but it does sounds alot of the holding back and second showcase rumours are damage control and copium

of course its a readers feature but arent Metro the ones constantly posting articles about how much trouble xbox is in and how the console is irrevelant?

Just goes to show how quick some of these media outlets are to turn on a certain brand.

of course, if MS has an equally bad or weaker showing, youll be guranteed they will be 50 articles about how this is the end of xbox

Firmly convinced that for a number of people, gaming isn’t about games really, but the console warz, and Sony are the sacred icon who cannot be tarnished.

Apparently it’s a few sources saying it like Colin from IGN and others.

Showcase I doubt too, but one or two State of Plays, I guess. Although you could have told me the showcase was SOP and I’d believed ya.

They’ve showed me that Showcase and State of Play are basically the same thing to them now, so doesn’t mean a ton if they have another Showcase this year.

They called it Show because they have nothing to show and have not made a big show for 2 years, but you do not create AAA games from thin air.

We knew Naughty Dog was full on Factions and that the remake of LastOU was to learn ps5 hardware. It was stupid to think they had another game to show off. the big surprise is that Factions is going nowhere and has been scaled back.

We knew that Guerilla just came out of its HFW DLC, so the next game is probably in early state.

We knew that Santa Monica has just released GOW2, so we are 3-4 years before a new game.

We knew that Sucker Punch took 6 years to deliver GOT and was playing with the Director edition not too long ago. A new game could be well into the future.

The same comment applies to Bend Studios since the release of Days gone and their discussions to make something else.

The rest of the studios are small, not doing AAA, or VR, or GAAS, even multi platform.

So, this is not a surprise they had nothing to show. they went strong at the end of the last gen, now they are very dependent on the third parties and their investment into 12 GAAS studios produce what we have seen last week.

Sony are no different to Xbox

Games take a long time to make and they aren’t magicians, Sony were just better prepared for the first couple of years due to some smart moneyhats (the last half of 2021 and this year would have been absolutely dire without them) and a first party that didn’t decide to just start taking things seriously in 2018

Many of Sony’s big games that people want to see are years away, just like many of Xbox’s

Good point! I had not looked at it that way at all. Before the show I was really expecting some big stuff but I didn’t realise it’s just way too early. Sony studios aren’t magicians.

It’s disappointing about Factions, had they not started working on that we could have had a new SP game by them. By the way, wasn’t a new studio making a new Uncharted?

There has been rumors about Bend Studios pitching an Uncharted game, but it is more related to the fact they made Uncharted Vita and Day Gone 2 was cancelled. Anyway, they are making something for sure.

Recent studio purchases were support studios, PC conversion studios and GAAS MP games focused.

They are making a GAAS new IP.

Their AAA cost much more every year with sales and ROI far less than the market can absorb. The solution was to shift to GAAS through buying Bungie and financing lots of projects. The problem is that Sony has not the DNA for that and even more critical has taught its userbase for years that GAAS was bad. They are in a conflicting situation of lack of dedicated skills and lack of good will from their userbase. Interesting times ahead.

Insomniac - Spider-Man/R & C 2023

Media molecule - LBP/Dreams - 2020

Sucker punch - Ghost of Tsushima - 2020

Team asobi - Astro Bot - 2020

To me theses make sense for the next studios to put a game out. I doubt any of them would be ready for 2023 or the first half of 2024 due to the pandemic. I always put these lists together to help line up/predict what is likely to be at a show (gameplay not CGI). If only this was done before the show it could have helped.

Yep, MANY Sony PS fans aren’t really gamers they are just Sony fans and in this case Sony happens to make gaming consoles. It is tiring dealing with these people.

Watched some reaction videos, oh my oh my.

With the very underwhelming show in mind it really should not be hard for Xbox to at least remove the sour taste out of people’s mouths. I mean we haven’t heard about these games since 2020, so you’d think it’s definitely about time for some proper updates.

But I’m sure Xbox didn’t know that Sony’s show would be this underwhelming. I can see MS having expected Sony to go “hard” and thus must have prepared a strong one themselves actually. As a huge gamer first and foremost I want this to be a strong show, make me excited and look forward to the future of Xbox first party, and second it would just be glorious to show these foul mouthed, arrogant man babies how it’s done.

Yea I have a feeling(not trying to console war) that Playstation is going to be in the same drought that Xbox was after this year. They released many of their big guns early and as many have said AAA development is getting expensive. They(PS fans) gonna see how it feels and what Xbox fans been talking about. For Xbox even though their was droughts last gen, Microsoft purchased most of their studios that time which prepared them for this gen.

This is why acquisitions are important. Yes quality over quantity forever, but you will definitely need quantity(studios) going forward. All in all Playstation can be in trouble after this year in terms of 1st party content, and I’m NOT wishing failure on Sony…

Wow. Coming from Metro, that’s a first!!!

Personally, even with Sony going heavy with live service, majority of their internal studios that are doing these games, I don’t give two shits about anyway and even Naughty Dog is 5th on my list out of my top 6.

Like with Microsoft and Xbox, people as usual are going nuts over one disappointing and underwhelming showcase which again like with Microsoft and Xbox, isn’t going to change much if anything.

It should have ended there, but instead we got wild rumors on the loose. That’s why this topic is still going. It should have been “it was bad” and that’s it.

It’s the same thing for Xbox. When something disappoints, a lot of people damage control instead of just admitting that what happened is bad and a screw up and move on.

I do believe that Sony will have at least two State of Plays in the second half of 2023. And who know, if they’re like June 2022 or September 2022, hell, I’ll be happy with them. lol

As for the Sony showcase, I never thought it was bad. Disappointing and underwhelming? Absolutely but that’s also because everyone always hypes up all of these shows. Same thing happens with Xbox, Nintendo, Keighley’s shows, etc.

It’s why I always keep my expectations low. This way, if the show disappoints me, no biggie because my expectations were low to begin with and if I get one hell of a show, then awesome. Either way, it’s all about managing expectations.

Summer Game Fest for example, im not expecting to get much out of it but as of now, I know that I will get a long gameplay trailer for Alan Wake 2 (yay!!) and a new trailer and possibly a release date for the Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty expansion (double yay!!) so that show will at the very least give me two things that im all in with.

What makes the whole discourse hilarious is that Jim Ryan said “total mindshare” . However this show showed he may not be that well connected with his audience because Sony’s brand from the last 10 years was single player experiences and multiplayer isn’t that important. Anyways this Jim Ryan’s defining moment because he’s been living off of his predecessors.
