Playstation Plus revamp announced, Jim Ryan explains why Sony cannot currently offer day and date games in service

How many PS3 games are currently on PSNow?

Don’t see that happening anytime soon tbh. Playstation is big, but I’m sure apple will just try to use their apple tvs to enter gaming before acquiring a competitor.

On the Sony side, other than Playstation completely turning into a disaster bigger than Ps3 (regarding losses) I doubt they’d ever sell. And a PS3 like scenario will likely not ever happen again now that Sony shops around the console design from chip makers instead of trying to make their own processor and being stuck with it. Even the Ps5 case where they undershoot the target rival performance, they could get around with the overclocks and while they are behind the expected timeframe to be profitable, it’s not even on the same stratosphere the Ps3 was (remember that thing cost 600 dollars 15 years ago and still had like a 200-300 debt per unit)

In the end Sony wants profit, and while Playstation brings immense revenue, this cost of revenue is too high (they are too reliant on console selling well, and their games see ample discounts and bundling, so they bring money, but very little profit). For example, they have twice the Nintendo’s revenue but half of the profits.

The changes Sony are doing could improve that scenario for them, so it’s possible that compared to what they are now, they see their profits increasing a lot, even if they are no longer the market leader.

Tales from their asses. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s like the amount of budget is what only matters, we saw how things went with Horizon 2 and Elden Ring. It’s more how you spend your budget than how big it is. Some spend their budget and manpower on facial hair and mocap and others on bosses and levels.

There was another factor at play. Sony really wanted to win the Blu Ray vs HD DVD war so they were willing to take the PS3 price hit at the beginning of the generation.

I actually agree, I wouldn’t put a year on it but within the next decade I think someone (likely apple) will pick up sony because looking at them, their music and gaming divisions are doing well but with these acquisitions we are likely witnessing the begining of their gaming division downfall meaning their music division is the only largely profitable division they will have left. Their film division is doing well if we include spiderman but if we don’t their movie division is doing ok but not great, definitely not as well as the music and gaming division. And the rest are not doing good, like who has a sony TV or phone now a days.

They used to be the company when hardware was so important but now software is much more important, sony is no longer innovators like they used to be and looking at their stock, they are yet to recover and the changing of times is likely why, Sony is at a real risk of priced out of one of the market they are most successful in, escpecially if companies like apple or facebook or amazon or so start acquiring like Microsoft is. Like I don’t think some people get how bad of a position Sony will be in if Microsoft acquires 1 or 2 big publishers (capcom and take two for example) and pulls the plug on all or most of those games being multiplate. In that situation its a lose lose for Sony since they will either lose a massive amount of their market share or they will have to allow game pass on to playstation which will eat away at their game sales. We don’t know how other big acquisitions would be handled e.g. amazon but their is the chance they pull those games from xbox and PlayStation too but its harder too say but if that happens same deal but not as bad as it may not result in them being exclusive to a direct competitor within the console space.

I could see apple picking Sony up earier tbh as a short cut into the console market but it depends on how apple goes about it assuming they do enter. Also if they did acquire sony I could picture Sony rolling their movies into apple TV (they could even bundle crunchy roll with it) and a lot of music into apple music.

Yep. Look at Hellblade, in several ways you would think this was made by a big team and a huge budget. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s none of that.

Not necessarily true. Ms went that route for 360/OG xbox because xbone processor lack the grunt to actually emulate, so they translated the old console instructions into native xbone ones. And that layer of translation is even pre compiled in the cloud.

But Ps5 era cpus (actually even a few lower) are already enough to handle Ps3 emulation. Though Sony removed vector units from the zen2 design (while even steamdeck has them) so that might be a problem (not a deal breaker as the gpu can handle those)

And Ms stopped doing that because as they said, they now reached the legal bounds of their solution. They can technically run any game, but for any game they didn’t added they lacked the approval to do so (either because the owner didn’t wanted or it’s no longer valid).

In theory Ms could just allow you to make the pre compiling locally and run from any disc, but there are a bunch of non technical reasons they didn’t too

  • That’s what they did with OG bc on 360, and fans just didn’t use. They don’t want the bc game to be a separate experience, they want it just to be a regular game you start and play
  • So they need to be their own entry on the library, store and system, but publishers and other devs don’t want you to be able to just add games to that that doesn’t go through the same process as they have to
  • To make it possible Ms took on the task of going through the process themselves, they create store entries for the new games, handle the re compiling themselves, the system updates, they fetch HD arts for the game titles, they make and keep store and game listings on XBL etc

tl;dr: Ms can make any BC game work, but the approach wouldn’t’ be used as much, the approach they took limit the catalog (for bureaucratic reasons) but the experience in playing a BC game feels native,

Oh yeah, that definitely too.

In the end also ended up not paying off because when BD won the sales of movies had already tanked due digital stores that allowed you to rent, download and watch later and the emergence streaming options.

Ms is definitely spending big bucks on development, but not necessarily on a single game development. There’s a lot of talk about how Ms is investing big time on tools and ML so the actual content creation can be done by less people and more rapidly/efficiently.

Well no I’ve read it multiple times now and he implies nothing of the sort. He is literally just referencing their own stuff in all quotes.

I’m no fan of Jimbo but you’re reading something into this that isn’t there.

Rather than imply subscription service games are lower quality he said that if he made games for a subscription service they would be lower quality in order to maintain his profit margin.

Much more interesting for me as logically this means one of two things they don’t want to invest anything to grow their subs or they can’t afford too. either way it’s a bad look from a customer perspective.

I’m not writing this off yet as something weak or nothing special.

Sony managed to get some pretty strong games with Plus, while it has been horrible when it comes to GwG and as we talked about before even Game Pass van definitely see a improvement with adding AAA more often and just…more.

We’ll have to wait and see just how much of an improvement it will be for Sony.

They should give people discount on their games at premium

So can you individually buy the BC games, or are they only available through the subscription service?

Nate Drake suggested you’d be able to buy

Ill believe it when i see it.

Horse shit mainly. A games budget is #months developed x #of employees salaries. So for Forza Horizon 5 was 36 x 160ish employees + Music/car licensing. Whereas Halo Infinite is like 71x 600+ employees + outsourcing.

As a rule, i’d expect most AAA Xbox games to be bigger budgeted then AAA Playstation games. Microsoft pays better and Microsoft has larger studios (because multiplayer)

Sony only makes campaigns…which is half an Xbox game.

Yeah Blu Ray was a bet that didn’t pay off the way Sony thought it would. Ironically it did help Sony eventually because the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii had huge success with Netflix that generation which later caused them to go all in on “tv tv tv” with the Wii U and Xbox One. PS4 dominated because their competition miscalculated where console gaming was headed.

Now we have a new generation and it’s certainly possible that it’s PlayStation that is making the miscalculation as gaming seems to be headed towards Gamepass subscription and PlayStation wasn’t prepared to compete in that space. Also Sony Pictures has been out maneuvered by mergers and they are successful but at the same time homeless in streaming and surrounded by competition that invested in the movie streaming wars. It might take a buyout from Apple to fix Sony’s mistakes and make them competitive in this new era.

But Sony AAA sell 5-10x more retail copies.

Can’t tell if this is sarcastic or not, but it certainly is not truthful.

Check out the PS4 sales of first-party and compare to XBox One. Sony had 5-6 games that sold 10-20 million copies, XB1 not a single.

PS4 sold like 2.5 more consoles … And made more games than Xbox during the last gen. Not to mention aside 2-3 Xbox did not have big games at all during the last gen. And also have been releasing the games on PC.

Saying that PS sold times more (though only a handful of games) in comparison to Xbox, is like saying that PS4 sold more in physical charts (where they have 50/50 physical split while Xbox has almost 90/10)
