Forza is “early in development”. Everwild - Rare is still working out what the game will even play like. Seriously, the only new thing for MS until 2022 is likely Psychonauts 2, and Halo which will both come out in the later half of 2021. However, those games you mentioned will start to become available in 2022 and later which is why I said they should be fine from 2022 onward … but 2020 and 2021 could be pretty rough, especially since Halo won’t be available until XBox is already behind by some undetermined number.
MS just has to get to 2022 in decent shape, and the only way that happens now is with a seriously cheap Series S. MS likely has no tentpole release for their system until the second half of 2021 if you are realistic here. We already know that Halo was going to be “on fire” when it arrived this year. Now I wouldn’t expect it before Summer of 2021 - hopefully with all the visual goodies like ray tracing in the initial release. Now we do know that at some point Flight Simulator will be available sometime next year as well, though we have no idea of date. Asobo has some work to do to get the experience down with a controller as opposed to keyboard
MS should just pump the crap out of CP 2077, which is now the only real “next-gen” experience available for at least the first six months. It won’t bother me, because I’m patient. Also, I cannot play crap on the 1S so I will be busy playing all of the games I couldn’t before, either with the Series X or an uber PC build. I will NOT make the mistake of buying the 1S equivalent again, and be stuck with terrible performance four to five years into the generation as a result. But many people buy a new console for new experiences, and MS isn’t really going to have much of that …
I will be playing Control, Jedi Fallen Order, Ori2, and RDR2 in November after waiting awhile for all of those. In addition Battle Toads, Gears 5, and Grounded … but all of those will be old hat to anyone who had a 1X. But if you do not think Sony is going to straight up own MS until 2022 or later, you aren’t looking at the situation very objectively.
Series S has to be $299 to make up for the lack of software … and Series X is going to be the exact price of the PS5 or maybe $50 cheaper - neither will be cheap. The real question mark is what Sony does with the DE, which nobody had a clue about until a few months ago. Sony has kept its cards close to the vest
Like most others I think it will be
$499 for both the Series X/PS5 - neither is going above $500 as that is the kiss of death
$399 for the PS5 DE
$299 for the Series S, with maybe MS willing to go lower, but I just cannot see it
I can’t see a world where the DE has more storage, certaintly not for the same price, those SSDs are pricey, certainly more pricey than the cost of a drive.
But in a world where games have to be installed to the SSD to play, having the extra space for a DE doesn’t make sense, both consoles need the same amount of space really.
My predictions are the same as my earlier post but with the Halo Infinite delay, Microsoft should say fuck it, discontinue Xbox One S (which they should do anyway) and price Series S at $200 and Series X at $400.
First, Sony isn’t going to get close to that. At best, the PS5 Digital matches Series X at $400 and even that I don’t believe will happen. Second, Microsoft doesn’t have to even think about a price drop for at least 5 years give or take. Third, even at $300 and $500, Series X/S is easily going over 1m on it’s launch day. No doubt about that at all but if they want to make the number higher which they should, they go $200 and $400.
Delaying Halo Infinite is disappointing and all that BUT it was also quite honestly, a BALLSY move. They need to stay ballsy (lol) and go extreme with the price. People were going to buy Series X/S mainly due to Halo Infinite and while I still believe that the vast majority will still buy it day one (like me), going with a lower than expected price tag will keep those who thought about waiting or jumping ship to still stick with Series X/S.
More than ANY game, it’s the price that’s most important. At $200 and $400, just get people in the door and everything else will fall into place.
Phil would be fired under those conditions. He has a number that his boss has given him, and losing billions just to get “ahead” will not sit will with those that make the decisions. $299 is definitely going to be pushing it as is … I expect the $299 price tag
I’m sure Phil Spencer would have to get the approval of Nadella and Hood but at the same time, they’ve already spent tens of millions on the marketing for Halo and it’s over a year away so better off spending more to get people in the door with the possibility of making it all back in the long term.
For the record, I am expecting $300 and $500 but if it was up to me, I would go $200 and $400.
That makes absolutely no sense. Series S that is 1/2 the power and has BOM at least $150 cheaper than PS5DE to be same price? Also PS5D dropping $10-$15 optical drive to reduce price by $100 when even at $499 it would be losing money. Don’t forget the price of all the things included in the box including that more expensive DualSense and shipping costs.
Why do you think that Sony doesn’t need to announce price but MS does? Don’t retailers need to know the price? Pre-orders without price idk if it would even be legal.
Sony tries to release the console first so they have to announce first.
Also think of it this way: do you think that MS is in this business to make as much money as possible or not? Why would they announce $249 if Sony prices theirs at $600? I expect lockhart to be $150 cheaper than PS5D
If MS has a $299 stripped down machine, then Sony will price the DE at $399 to nullify any potential sales impact. I have seen none of the “arrogance” that says they will do something truly stupid with price like the PS3 days. But only another month until we know for certain …
I think it is interesting that Albert Penello weighed in on this on the other site
I think that’s why MS is waiting until Sony announces their prices. The ball is in Sony’s court right now imo. I can see the S being $279 or maybe even $249 if Sony goes to $399. The drive is a fairly cheap part and Sony will lose a ton of money at $399. I just find it pretty hard to believe they’ll go that low.
Penello also mentioned that the consoles may be more expensive than we are thinking and all bets are off right now. Not sure he knows much tbh.
I just saw a rumour for a new Xbox ONE S SKU with a 1TB drive at $299 USD. Which I think makes sense. Could be baloney, but if true then I am even more certain of my original estimates:
Xbox One S 1TB - $299 USD
Xbox Series S - $399 USD
PS5 Digital - $499 USD
Xbox Series X & PS5 - $599 USD
Yes, pricey, but very realistic considering the hardware packed in to these machines. Also realistic in how competitive all the prices are.
Would a new One S be priced at $299 in Fall of 2020? Convention says no, that there should be a price drop to match any PS4 price drop. That said, there must be a good reason it’s a new SKU, perhaps a mini console or it comes with built in free Gamepass for 1 or 2 years (they have this ability now, if you weren’t aware, to tie licenses to the hardware unit so they can’t be shared).
I am assuming a lot on many topics here so I have the potential to be embarrassingly wrong.
I’m beginning to believe that the PS5 and XSX are going to be $599. If you think about it, the One X was discontinued, because the XSS is it’s replacement in the lineup. Nintendo is selling the Switch at $299. The old One X at retail price was $399, though often sold cheaper
Before sales, the retail for the XSS is probably going to be $399, which is why MS refuses to go first. They are waiting to see if Sony prices the DE around $399, and if so, they will have to skew their prices lower to compensate. But I think that nrXic is right on the money with his guess. And it also means that I am very closely going to be watching the nVidia announcement as well in early September
